Is that possible now? Or is that limitation still there? (BIAB 2010)

Of course, chords don't usually change more often than one per beat, but sometimes they do. Or even if not changing, one might want it to be reiterated in an accented manner.

For instance, the following: three syncopated accented chords over two beats--as a dotted eighth, another dotted eighth, and an eighth.

I could figure out how to get the first two in. The normal way, within the two-beat chord chord entering space--enter the two chords, with a comma between them. Putting a push on the second one makes it start early, gives the syncopation.

But what about the third chord? Is it impossible to put three chords within two beats?

Well----

Is there any way to do what I requested?

If not, I would certainly suggest working on that for the next version, or better yet, an update of BIAB 2010.

One should be able to have more than one chord per beat. It happens in jazz, latin, pop, etc. music. BIAB should be able to do that.

You should add your voice to the many who have posted about this on the Wishlist.

Since you've been on the forum for many years, you must be aware of 'Notes' Norton's expanded styles, right? Basically, you do in two measures what would have been one, so you can effectively double the amount of places you can put chords.

If you want to add a quater note triplet chord movement, you can change that half of a 4/4 bar to a 3/4 bar and the remainder to a 2/2 bar. Do not forget to change the tempo of the 3/4 bar so that 3/4 equals 2/4 tempo-wise. E.g. you want to use a triple chord movment Dm7 up to Fm7 (Dm7, D#m7, Em7 >Fm7), the Dm7, D#m7, Em7 is the triplet, change that part of the bar to a 3/4 bar.

Good Luck!

Tonnie, that's very creative. I don't recall seeing that trick before.

Not sure you got what I was asking, Ray. It appears that still as of the current build of BIAB 2010, one cannot enter more than two chords per two-beat cell. The third chord in what I described cannot be entered, other than by using some complex work-arounds, that others have suggested.

You can only do this with Norton Music's EXPANDED styles.

In my EXPANDED styles, each BiaB "cell" becomes a half measure instead of a full measure.

This allows you to put 8 chords in a bar of music, and it will also allow a chord on a beat and the eighth note before that very same beat (something very common in Rock, Country and Blues).

To audition low-fi mp3 recordings of my EXPANDED styles, go to http://www.nortonmusic.com/styledemo.html and look for the word EXPANDED in blue typeface.

I'm also redesigning the demo page to make it easier to use. The top part is redesigned the rest is coming as I get the time.

More chords in one bar part II (This time 4 chords in a ¾ style)

Last week miaki posted a question of how to get more than 4 chord in one 4/4 bar.
I suggested that in case of a quarter note triplet chord movement, one could split a 4/4 bar in to one 2/4 bar and one ¾ bar, adjust the tempo of the ¾ bar, so that 3/4 equals the 2/4 bar, tempo-wise. (See post #262295)

The equivalent would be in case of a “quadruple” (4 quarter note chords) into one ¾ bar. E.g. bar 3 in “Moon Rover” in C, the bar could hold 4 equal length #5 chords (B7#5, A7#5, G7#5, F7#5) into that one bar, by changing that bar to a 4/4 bar. Again one has to change the tempo, so that these one 4/4 beat bar equals the ¾ bars tempo-wise.

Now with the possibility to freeze tracks, one could adjust the accompanying instrument tracks, to avoid unwanted side effects of the change of number of beats.

Good luck,
Tonnie

Norton Music offers expanded styles (style disk #17) that are worthwhile for none jazz styles.
However he does not yet offer any jazz styles, nor do his styles offer the quarter note triplet in 4/4, or the above quadruple in ¾ styles. Perhaps he can find time to have a new look at this in the near future.

Hi Tonnie,

Good to read your methods/workarounds

The Norton disc for expanded styles has 7 or 8 jazz based expanded styles but does not have a straight ahead jazz style which is a pity

If the figure that you want is: dotted eighth-sixteenth note tied to an eighth note-eighth note, do as you did for the dotted eighth to sixteenth, enter your chord on beat three and push that chord. Later, Ray

Hi Maiki

ANOTHER METHODS -

1.This number of chords per bar is very rare for my music but when it does come up I think I used the simple in Midi mode - go to Edit > Expand (durations of chords by 2) which then x2 the tempo to compensate (or change tempo to suit) - you can then enter 8 chords and this also preserves the triplet feature

Some RealTracks are ok but when you get to the high tempos (120 becomes 240, etc) your options are reduced - but this method is perfect with Midi and some RealDrums

2. I see no reason why you can't use the Norton expanded jazz styles and other styles and then substitute with the RealTracks using the above method as the RealTracks determine the style

Hi Bob,

I bought many of your styles and fakebooks years ago (before BIAB even supported long file names)

Do your expanded styles support Realtracks and Realdrums?

Thanks a lot for your great workarounds.

That said, BIAB really should have a simple way to add more chords than the number of beats per measure, without having to buy third party expanded styles, not complex workarounds.i have put such a request in the wish list.

i agree with someone else who wrote something to the effect that--PG Music should not only concentrate on new RTs and RDs, and new features to add on, but to fix some of the basic long-term problems with the app. For instance, this one. BIAB has been around for decades. (I was using it back in the early DOS versions.) Why can one not have more chords than the number of beats per measure yet? Why still the problems with ASIO? Etc., etc.

But yes, thank you for the workarounds. Good ideas. I'll try it.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
