It's A Fine Line

I was playing around with Kontakt Picked Acoustic (I recall when I bought it that it was a topic in the Off-Topic forum )and used it as the intro guitar. As is often the case I used it once and then move on to something else but but the guitar certainly sounds rich.

Leon - Lyric & Vocals
I played the acoustic solo and sang a little.

RealTracks in style: 3119:Bass, Acoustic, PopHalfNotesSync Ev 085
MIDI SuperTracks in song: 1805:Synth Pad, PopBelieve Ev16 065
RealTracks in song: ~365:Guitar, Acoustic, Fingerpicking Ev 085
RealTracks in song: ~1118:Guitar, 12-String Acoustic, Strumming Ev 085
MIDI SuperTracks in song: 2242:Piano, Electric, Rhythm CoolJazzPop Ev 085
RealDrums [in style:AmericanaRoots16th^02-a:Sidestick, b:Snare
Plus the above mentioned guitar.

It’s A Fine Line

It’s a fine line between today and tomorrow
It’s a fine line between happiness and sorrow
It’s a fine line between feeling good and feeling like
Your world is coming down around your ears

It’s a fine line between ignorance and hate
So much depends on each decision that you make
There’s a fine distinction between who you are and
Who it is you want the world to see

Don’t be afraid
To roll the dice
Every waking moment
Involves a choice
One day you’re down and out
Then you’re riding high
One day you’re crawling
And the next day you can fly

It’s a fine line between sickness and wellbeing
How much can you really trust what you think it is you’re seeing?
It’s a fine line between the infinite variety
Of futures you potentially will see

It’s a fine line between the darkness and the light
It’s a fine line between what’s legal and what’s right
It’s a fine line between standing up for dignity
Or giving in selfishly to greed

Don’t be afraid
To speak the truth
Speak it to power
Offer them your proof
Raise up your voice
And make them hear
It might surprise you
How much you can achieve

It’s a fine line between today and tomorrow
It’s a fine line between happiness and sorrow
It’s a fine line between feeling good and feeling like
Your world is coming down around your ears

It’s a fine line between feeling good and feeling like
Your world is coming down around your ears

Peter,

Love the opening on this—really engaging. The repetition of “fine line” works vey well, setting up the song structure, and everything plays off that. Really like the lyrics here—you carry the theme of contrasting extremes all the way through both consistently and meaningfully. Really like this one—well done!

Oh, and that drum just kicked in around the three minute mark—nice touch.

Kind regards,

Deej

Lots of hooks Peter: lyrical, melodic & musical.
Tidy arrangement to support you narrative and voice.
Ace.

Great choice of material.

A really good write, and the told story is remarkable.

I really enjoyed the backing vocals too, it gave additional purposeful depth. It was interesting to see how late you decided to introduce the percussion into the song.

Nice, all around.

Peter and Leon,

That opening guitar sounds really good. Does that come with patterns to select or do you program all of that yourself?

Speaking of fine lines...there are many in this write. One right after another. Solid.

I really like the way...
"It’s a fine line between feeling good and feeling like
Your world is coming down around your ears"
...breaks the rhythm of the previous pairs. Very effective.

Nice outro guitar solo.

Well done.

Jangly - nice build throughout the song. I like the way you change the rhythm the second time through the verse.

Enjoyed this listen!

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Thanks floyd.
The guitar comes with lots of patterns - you just provide the chords. There is a thread in the off topics forum about exporting chords from Band In A Box to midi and into programs like this.

I like this. Nice work on the song and the lyrics, as others have said, are well written.

Yep... The kontakt guitar actually sounds pretty convincing. I have a third party acoustic guitar called Strummer. Sounds really good but it's a little bit stiff and sounds too mechanical as a result.

Kontakt Picked is ok...works, but as soon as Peter's solo comes in, you can see why it is just "ok" smile Congrats on this project! I would put this tune among top few I heard from you. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Peter an Leon,

I saw I am not the only one mentioning your 'fine lines'.
Your lyrics are cleverly made and very good performed in this nice melody with the pretty good sounding acoustics.

This is very well done,
Hans

It's a happy circumstance when Dylan, Willie, and the late John Prine are releasing new albums. This fits very comfortably in that vein. Nice one Gentleman. Love the fade out too.

Peter and Leon,
A very good and thoughtful lyric with the repetition setting the flow up nicely.
I agree the opening acoustic guitar grabs the attention ( we get so used to the RT guitar sound it makes me sit up when there`s something obviously different).
Lovely outro solo fits perfectly.

Ain't it the truth...

Straddling that line requires a lot of finesse!

There is so much to like here.

- the both thoughtful and thought provoking write

- the very nice vocals - had Janice singing along from the get go.

- Peter's guitar

- the cool arrangement and band choices

Janice said it made her cry the first time she listened the other evening.
So many life situations can fit this lyric. The hallmark of a great one.

Well done y'all!

Liked how you gave a slight punch to your main "It's a fine line" phrase with your voice doubling. The guitars were excellent, and the overall mix very pleasant. Enjoyed my visit to your music!

Very nice lyrics, simple with a clear message but still giving room for thoughts. The picking guitar has very nice sound and fits the overall folk mood. Good selection of instruments and the arrangement has enjoyable variation. Great vocals too.

Thanks Herb. The Kontakt guitar does sound very nice - probably a way to subtly change the repeating pattern to remove the mechanical result that you get from this as well (but it sounds like hard work). Quite a lot of options available.

Hi Peter & Leon,

Definitely in the Folk-Singer-Songwriter vein.

The intro sounded very much like a Dylan track, until Leon started to sing - he
sings way better than Dylan!

The guitars sounded great and the whole backing had a coherence which was very pleasing
and easy to listen to.

Excellent lyrics too and a nice clean mix to finish it off.

Enjoyed.

ROG.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
