Hi, all:

Hope everyone is doing well. Here's something new . . . well, at least from a production standpoint. I wrote this song a few years back and I tried a few times to do a BIAB version of this when I first started with the software—but kept coming up horribly empty. Hoping I have improved to some degree, I decided to revisit it recently and this is where I ended up for better or worse. Hope you enjoy the listen and thanks as always for the kind feedback.

Here's the song:

SHE'S GOT A GOOD HEART

Here are the lyrics:

My buddies say my baby’s
got some marbles out of place.
My Momma says she doesn’t
have such a pretty face.
She’s got a laugh that makes
an otter sound like Princess Di;
an eye for fashion that
could make both Versaces cry.

But my baby’s got a good heart,
and that’s everything.
She’s got a good heart—
I don’t care what you say.
She’s got a good heart,
and that’s everything,
She’s got a good heart.

You never see her
when the lights go down;
when the whole world’s sleeping
and no one’s around.
That’s when she says
the really sweet stuff;
that’s when I know
I know complete love.
And the really, really best part is . . .

My baby’s got a good heart,
and that’s everything.
She’s got a good heart—
I don’t care what you think
She’s got a good heart,
and that’s everything,
She’s got a good heart.

My buddies all like their
ladies firm and slim.
And I know my baby’s body
has never even seen a gym.
She maybe drinks a little more
than a lady should.
And those funny cigarettes
don’t do her any good . . .

But my baby’s got a good heart,
and that’s everything.
She’s got a good heart—
I don’t care what you think
She’s got a good heart,
and that’s everything,
She’s got a good heart.

You never see her
when the lights go down;
when the whole world’s sleeping
and no one’s around.
That’s when she says
the really sweet stuff;
that’s when I know
I know complete love.
And the very, very best part is . . .

My baby’s got a good heart,
and that’s everything.
She’s got a good heart—
I don’t care what you think
She’s got a good heart,
and that’s everything,
She’s got a good heart.

It's really difficult to find anything to dislike about this presentation.

It's dynamic, has fills in all the right places, encompasses a great set of lyrics, and is very musically delivered with a top set of vocals.

Congratulation are definitely required. Great job.

Very solid production--not sure what you had before, but I think you accomplished your goal here!

What I liked most about this is that each time your repeated the chorus, you made it different, with backup vocal lines or harmonies or something else. As a listener, I really appreciate that kind of "architecture" because it gives your audience a bit more each time, not just another "hit" of the chorus lines. It's like going the extra mile to make it continually more interesting.

Man, that chorus! Just love the way you sing that, outstanding.

Everything about this from the write to the vocals and arrangement is top notch IMHO, well done.

This is so cool. You've blended several pieces together to make a unique, well written and sung tune.
I can hear everything from Rick Springfield to for some reason (I think it's the guitar) to Buddy Holly twinge in your voice. I honestly can't say anything I've heard you post here wouldn't be considerably more radio worthy than any of the stuff that is played...

Thanks for posting it.

I love that quick little falsetto you throw in, it's the kind of thing I've come to expect from your work. Great vocal as always, good song with a good hook that made it memorable. Had a Tom Petty feel to it. Nice.

Top notch song. This could have come right off a record (or a stream these days). Vocals are great - dynamic, expressive, well timed, and varied. As already noted, the architecture of this song is a key factor - you keep changing it up to make it interesting, but you never take your foot off the pedal for a second - it just keeps on rockin. Super catchy, foot tappin', very pro sound.

Sweet positive funny lyrics, nice namedropping in the first verse, I was expecting some also in the second verse, but dropping vices makes me smile also smile
Great vocals, really enjoyed your singing once more. Excellent and interesting harmonies as well, although I was hungry for even more anthemic sing-a-long chorus, live feeling.
But the highlight of the song is the super catchy chorus and the great rocking band that supports it very well.

Deej,
A really catchy power pop song ;I was singing along and rediscovered I can`t do falsetto... bu, but t you sure can!
The vocals are as energetic as I`d expect from you and the arrangement works well with those harmonies helping to pick up the ending.
Maybe the drums could have more thunder, but this is excellent!

Hi Deej ...

I like it .. a lot! Your vocals always impress me. And I think you've found the perfect EQ for your terrific voice. I'm impressed! Really, really nice work!

BTW ... the lead guitar riff is a great choice for this one. Also, the counter-vocals really add a nice touch to the overall sound.

Best to you. Be safe ...

Alan

Deej56,
Very well thought out tune. Reminds me of some big names alternative Pop Rock bands of 90s. Walking bass and vocals are ACE. Clever lyrics.
Enjoyed it! Thank you for sharing.

Wow! That's got a lot of the good things from 60's pop and NONE of
the not so good things. Slight hint of Billy Joe Royal even.

But what really separates it from the above is the quality of the write.
Just cool all the way around.

Your lead and the BGV's are standout. Perfectly sitting in the mix.

Nice build too.

So much to like and nary a nit from us!

Thanks everyone for the listen and the kind feedback. Really glad it seems to have worked out well.

Deej,

Very nice tune!
Your vocal overwhelms me.
The guitar sound is very comfortable.
Moreover, the melody is very pop.
I feel some nostalgia and early Beatles in this tune.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Best regards.

Hi Deej,

You made a very cool, catchy song, but already everyone here told you so. It is difficult to write anything more complimentary than has already been done!
Your choice for the band has been very successful, given your hesitations.
But, although its a very good song, I prefer your slower songs, because your way of singing them is way more emotional and gives me goosebumps.

You've done it again - hats off.

First of all, this made me grin from beginning to end ... what inspired lyrics :-) And the production is top, top notch ... the music complements the lyrics perfectly, the singing is up to your usual stellar standard, the mixing (not my territory) is excellent ... excellent job! Well done.

Deej,

Excellent. In all regards.

I agree with the influences mentioned so far - Springfield, Petty... I'd add other great Radio Pop Rock folks - Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello, The Knack, Huey Lewis...

An excellent write for the genre. Could have easily hit the radio in days gone by...(again - your strongest stuff is self-penned)

Terrific production - great use of BIAB.

You are hitting all cylinders here. Super. More like this!!

Almost classic 80s power pop - it only needs a little more top end on the bass to get there.
Terrific song and top notch vocals.

Shigeki, Hans, musician17, Floyd, Greg, and rayc:

First off, my apologies for the delayed reply and thanks. I've been away from the board a bit, lost in some other things, but didn't quite realize for how long. I almost hesitated to respond not wanting to bump the song after all this time . . . but that didn't quite seem right either. Please know I really appreciate the listen and the kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed the tune.

I hope you are each doing well and staying safe!

My kindest regards to each of you,

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
