When I take a BIAB file and open and generate within RealBand, the audio quality is inferior to that of the same BIAB file rendered in BIAB and then dragged track by track to RealBand. The sound in RB sounds very flat but the sound in RB when the tracks are dragged from BIAB after rendering in BIAB have much more presence.
Are there some effects being rendered in the BIAB track files that are not the case when the tracks are generated directly in RB?

I found the same thing when I dragged the files in Cakewalk by Bandlab.

The setup is as follow: Win 10 laptop 16 GB RAM, USB to Presonus Audiobox 96 Interface, output to BBE Sonic Maximizer, output to JBL Eon One Linear Array portable PA (mono). With Sonic Maximizer in or out of signal chain, the different sound qualities from Tracks generated in RB vs Dragged from BIAB are maintained.

Any explanations for this different in sound?
Thanks

just a question - are the tracks you are talking about midi tracks or RealTracks?

if they are midi then are you using the same synth set up in RB as BIAB? what do you mean by rendering? if you are turning a BIAB midi track into audio and then opening the audio in RB you'll get the right sound so that makes sense.

but if your tracks are midi and RB is using a different synth then you might get the problem you describe when you open a BIAB file in RB.

apologies if you are using RealTracks but i can't think of anything that would produce the problem you describe apart from it being a midi synth issue.

maybe someone else has a better idea............. apologies your post title says RTs but i'm still unable to think of any explanation apart from the midi issue

ok ten minutes later - are you using a plugin in BIAB that you don't have registered in RB? if the BIAB sound depends on a plugin then it won't transfer to RB if RB doesn't have that plugin. or maybe i'm even more confused than when i started

Welcome to Band-in-a-Box and to the forum!

Interesting question that has me asking a question in return.

Could you have "Set mix to flat, dry and center" enabled?

Quote:
When the Master button is selected, changes to volume, reverb, etc. will apply to all tracks. Right-click on the Master button to open a menu of commands.

Quote:
"Set Mix to Flat, Dry and Center" sets the song to Flat (all volumes=90), Dry (no Reverb) and Center panning. This is useful when rendering individual tracks and transferring to a DAW.

Hi GGollobin,

Welcome to the forums smile

If you have a look at the mixer in BIAB, it offers settings called "Pan", "Reverb" and "Tone" as well as "Volume". These setting are often all active in BIAB song files.

When one opens an MGU or SGU file in Realband, though, only the Pan and Volume settings are transferred. This is because RB is a daw-like environment and it is designed for users to add their own tone changes using EQ and reverb, and other effects, using suitable plugins (or PG Music effects).

I suspect is is the sound difference due to the above that you might be experiencing.

Regards,
Noel

Glad somebody sensible has joined the discussion but aren't reverb and fx settings unaffected on RealTracks as they are audio recorded with the fx enabled? that's why i was drifitng towards the midi track route

Hi Bob,

If you load the demo song for many Realstyles in BIAB and have a look at the tone and reverb settings (to the right of the volume numbers), you'll see that they have numbers present that indicate they are in use.

Now, if you open the same style in Realband, there is no reverb nor tone settings. These have to be controlled separately.

Some effects are included in the actual Realtrack (like flange and distortion) but tone/reverb is usually added in the software.

I hope that this explains where I was coming from.

You thoughts about MIDI were excellent because this too could account for what the poster is meaning. (I was just trying to think from a different angle.)

Regards,
Noel

There might also be issues in the transfer of dynamics and effects between the 64 bit and 32 bit environments of BIAB and RB. The poster's software may not have the jbridge add-on.

Hopefully the poster will return to the forum and update this post with his or her findings.

Every contributor's input is valid which just helps to prove how complex the answer to a "simple" question can be!

There are a couple of BIAB settings that will affect the difference in sound.

If you look at the Preferences Screen, you will see on the "Audio" settings that PeakLimit is probably checked by default. This can affect your sound.

Additionally, BIAB has a default reverb setting for the entire mix that will affect output. Click on "Reverb" to see the current setting. This setting does not carry over into RealBand.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
