Since updating Band-in-a-Box 2020 on Windows 10 HE 64-bit to version 721, the VST3 crashes in both Studio One 4 Pro and Cakewalk by Bandlab. I think I have narrowed the culprit down to Malwarebytes Pro, as with that program switched off, the VST3 works perfectly. I added the bbw exe files to the Allow list in Malwarebytes, but to no avail. The DAW Drag and Drop feature is not affected, just the VST3 app.

For those of you who can make sense of such things (I can't), here are a couple of error messages from today (full error logs available if required):

Exception class: EFOpenError
Exception message: Cannot open file "C:\bb\Preferences\DXiPluginListX64.ini". The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.
Exception address: 000000000052501A

Exception class: EFCreateError
Exception message: Cannot create file "C:\bb\Data\bbw4_PlugInLog.txt". The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.
Exception address: 0000000000524F81

Hi Thomas and welcome.

I can't help you with your problem but I can tell you that I have Win 10 Pro with the latest updates and Malwarebytes Pro and I have no problem with the VST3.

{Edit} I just had the same thing happen to me. All kinds of error messages, I think, but have not verified, one for each generated part! Like you I put the BB folder in Malwarebytes don't look at section and it had no effect what so ever. We are in the same boat. I did just click out of all the error messages and the VST3 worked. Hopefully I will have some time tomorrow to investigate this.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.
Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

64 bit Win 10 Pro, the latest BiaB/RB, Roland Octa-Capture audio interface, a ton of software/hardware

You might have found and fixed the problem I have. Since I am using infrequently Malewarebytes, I am going to delete it and try again.

Thank you!

When the BiabVTS3 starts bbw4.exe to generate tracks Malwarebytes probably has a panic attack and thinks it's a virus running in the background.

Yes, my screen looked like a party of error messages is going on. I lost count at 8. I went back to a update that I knew worked.

I did delete MalewareBytes but had a few things to do this morning. Just about to reinstall the latest update.

After deleting MalewareBytes it did NOT help.

Just to mention there is a new patch for Studio One but it probably did NOT fix it.

What did fix it was adding the BB executables to the exception list in McAfee. McAfee was having a fit about the current version.

Thanks all! I appreciate very much!!!

Please try installing the new build (722) of Band-in-a-Box and see if this resolves the issue.

Sorry, the issue with Malwarebytes is still there after installing build 722. With Malwarebytes bypassed, VST works perfectly. With Malwarebytes switched on, this is just one of the many error logs:

An exception error has occurred. You can continue to use the program, but should likely save your work and reboot program.

No love here either, i.e. same old problem.

I also got the blue screen of death while clicking out of those error messages.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.
Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

I probably don't count since I deleted MalewareBytes. Everything went fine after I updated my McAfee exclusion list. Since there was a new executable for BIAB, McAfee deleted the old file name off of its list.

I solved the problem here in a similar way Deb solved her problem. I excluded the entire BB folder from Defender scanning. Since I did that all is well again. Malwarebytes Pro was not the problem, Defender was.

The various error messages resulting from conflicts with Malwarebytes (and possibly other AV software) should no longer occur if you are running the latest builds of the plugin (2.9.41 or higher) and Band-in-a-Box 2020 (build 722 or higher). We have noticed that Malwarebytes can occasionally cause some functions to take longer, for example launching the StylePicker for the first time might take 15 seconds instead of a couple of seconds. You could prevent those potential delays by adding the bb folder to the Allow List.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."

Video: Enhanced Melodists in Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows®!

We've enhanced the Melodists feature included in Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows!

Access the Melodist feature by pressing F7 in the program to open the new MultiPicker Library and locate the [Melodist] tab.

You can now generate a melody on any track in the program - very handy! Plus, you select how much of the melody you want generated - specify a range, or apply it to the whole track.

See the Melodist in action with our video, Band-in-a-Box® 2024: The Melodist Window.
