Greeting all,

Since BIAB 2018 I have had the program installed on my desktop, laptop and my mates laptop and updated all three machines each year to the current version.

My machines are running fine but my mates one started freezing when the initial screen splash opens back around February, it was still running 2019 and I had purchased 2020 and updated both my machines.

Rightly or wrongly I figured that since I had purchased the latest version and installed the serial for 2019 had then lapsed and he then effectively had a 30 day trial of 2019 which ran out in Feb.

Due to the virus issues affecting the world at the moment we hadn't done any music since before it froze until Friday 3rd of July. I ran the update install and we still had the same problem.

I left him with my laptop so he could start writing again and brought his home to bring the Win updates up to date and clean it up ( he is a techno fossil ).

I've since uninstalled it from his laptop, cleaned out the registry and done a clean install.

No joy, the problem remains but Realband runs fine and has the 2020 licence serial.

Any help will be gratefully received.

Hi Dave,

I'm probably misunderstanding but when I read the above, it sounds like you have purchased one copy of BIAB and it's been installed for two different users. If that's the case, I suspect that that is not in keeping with PG Musics terms of use agreement.

As I understand PG Music's agreement, it's one purchase, one user and three activations for that single user.

It's been mentioned a few times on these forums over the years, but if you bought one version as a first purchase and then the other versions were bought as upgrades, that only counts as a single item since all purchases after the first purchase rely on the first purchase to get upgrade pricing.

I encourage you to talk to PG Music about this because I'm only guessing and I do not represent the company.

All the best,
Noel

Thanks for the reply Noel, the three machines all have different user names even though two of them are mine.

We have not had an issue across the three machines between January 2018 and February this year, so I doubt that's the issue

All good information above, but I think there also needs some clarification on the 30 day trial. You purchase the software up front and there is a money-back option, which essentially is a little different than the usual interpretation of a 30-day trial. I think you need to confirm with PG Music as suggested.

I'm just guessing that was the problem, the laptop my mate has is one of my old ones money is very tight for him so I passed it down ( we are both pensioners but I am in a slightly better position )

I first purchased BIAB PRO 2018 and immediately upgraded to Ultra Pak because the starter pack despite being called PRO was far too limiting during the 2017 Christmas sale and loaded it onto the three machines that at the time were all in my possession.

I then upgraded to 2019 Ultra during the 2018 Christmas sale and upgraded all three machines with no problems, I purchased 2020 Ultra Pak + and upgraded the two machines I use for music at home.

Early in 2019 I had given the third machine to Max ( how many PCs does one need I still have four ) and it worked fine until Feb 2020 when it stopped at the Splash BIAB screen and would go no further.

All three machines are 64 bit running Windows 10 with the latest ( 2004 build ).

For the life of me I can't see a logical reason for the problem apart from the 2019 serial number lapsing at the end of January when I did the upgrade on the two machines I have at home around 1st of January.

A full clean install on the third machine should have resolved this problem but it hasn't, Max is currently using my portable studio laptop for composing while I sort the other machine out so I am currently seriously limited in what I can do recording wise

Dave, thanks for the detailed and candid explanation. That's great.

I really think you need to contact PG Music, who are the developers, to get guidance on how you can resolve the issue.

This is a screenshot of where BIAB freezes on loading, as it started doing back in February when it was still BIAB 2019 Ultra.

I've done all of the Windows updates, done file and disk checks, defragged, registry clean and done a clean install and compared the files to what I have on my desktop PC, still the problem persists.

I know it will be something quite simple but I've run out of ideas

Try the following:

Go to your bb preferences folder (usually c:\bb\preferences), and rename the following two files:

Mysetup.dk
intrface.bbw

Then right click on your BiaB desktop shortcut and select Properties | Compatibility | Check 'Run program as Administrator' and click apply. Then double click on your Band-in-a-Box icon to launch the program.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
