I just purchased Band-In-A-Box 2017. BIAB runs just fine, but when I attempt to launch RealBand, it freezes while "Counting Candidate Plugins." My system is Windows 10 64-bit Home (upgraded from Windows 7), 8.00 GB RAM, i5 Intel CPU.

I found this old forum discussion from 2012 where someone was having a similar problem with BIAB at that time. I've already tried everything suggested there.

PluginScanLog.log reads as follows:
"Plugin Scan Log

Calling Windows FFilterMapper2.EnumMatchingFilters...
... Windows FFilterMapper2.EnumMatchingFilters succeeded

Counting candidate plugins in the Enum...
Plugin Enum Max was set by C:\RealBand\MaxPluginsToScan.txt"

I went to C:\RealBand\MaxPluginsToScan.txt and changed it from "Max=0" to "Max=100"
When that didn't work, I changed it to "Max=1000000"

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling. I didn't figure that would help as this is a first time install.

I've tried running it as administrator.

I tried installing on another computer at my office where I work, also a Windows 10 computer, but bought brand new with Windows 10. RealBand works just fine there.

Hi DBM,

Welcome to the forums.

Now that you've changed the MaxPlugins file, try the following....

1. In \Realband, rename REALBAND.INI and CFG.INI to REALBAND.INI.OLD and CFG.INI.OLD

....this effectively deletes them from Realband's gaze but keeps them if you need to retrieve them. Renaming the above resets Realband by forcing RB to create new versions of the files.

2. Right click on the RB shortcut and select 'Run as administrator'.

3. When RB starts and asks about drivers, select MME if it is an option. Do not yet select ASIO. We'll save that for later. Use ESC if you need to avoid choosing ASIO.

Does this help?

Regards
Noel

No. There are no files by those names. RealBand has never successfully launched on this computer, which probably explains why neither one is there.

Some thoughts spring to mind....

1. Is the latest program update installed?

To make certain of this, go to the Support link at the top of the page and navigate to the RB updates. Once there, download and manually install build 3.

2. What directory is RB in? Issues can arise if it's off Program Files.

3. What antivirus software do you use?

4. Also, there have been a couple of instances on the forum that a bad plugin has thwarted startup? If you know which plugin it stops at, try moving that to a different folder and see what happens.

Regards
Noel

I realize that this is an old thread but I have run into the same problem on a newer machine. I just re-installed BIAB and RealBand on a new computer with Win 10, 16GB of Ram, and an i7 8th generation processor. I get the same error as above of "Counting Candidate Plugins"
I have tried everything mentioned above but to no avail and there wasn't a follow up as to how it was resolved. All the updates to RealBand 2020 are installed but I am at a loss on how to resolve. The computer simply freezes and will not respond and I eventually have to do a restart. BIAB works fine.

Just wanted to give a shout out to PG Music Tech support. We worked through this issue and Realband is now running. Although we aren't 100% sure, it appears that there was an issue in the Windows registry when DX plugins were being scanned. Tech support spent close to 5 hours helping to resolve this issue. I just can't say thanks enough! Even though I can't tell anyone exactly, I wanted to at least put out what we feel the issue was so that hopefully it will help someone else in the future, and give credit to Tech support for not giving up on a very frustrating issue. Thanks again!

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
