This tutorial shows how I quickly find styles in BIAB with demonstrations where I use two songs ... "Tell It Like It Is" by Aaron Neville, and "What's Going On" by Marvin Gaye. The most important thing I find is to type the chords to the song in FIRST before going to find a style. It helps narrow down your choices considerable. Also by doing this sometimes you can find a style for a cover that you never thought of. If you've heard my Disco/House version of "Walk on By" you can hear how I typed the chords of the song in first BEFORE selecting a Disco style.

Henry,
Thanks so much for the video. Let me say first off that I have been using BIAB for over 2 decades and performing live with it as well. So what you have to say Is not new to me.
BUT I loved the way you presented it. Very casual to the point and with a great sense of humor.
I subscribed so I will look forward to viewing your other videos.

Great work. I'm glad you mentioned two things.

1. That the arrangement BIAB delivers will NOT be a perfect match to the record.

2. That you can use this method to find styles "in the style of".

Time well spent.

Your videos are a lot of fun to watch and will certainly help beginners. Thank you for your efforts.

I’m curious about the tip that entering the chords of the song first will improve the results from the style picker, even when the key is different from the known song. That surprises me, if there is that level of AI going on.

Matt, here's the deal. When you type in the chords of your favorite song you also type the chords in BAIB in the key of that song. Now at a minimum if it's one of your favorite songs you probably (should) know the melody :-) If you have that's it's just a matter of finding a pattern that is "like" the song. Of course it will not be an exact duplicate but the BIAB patterns can get pretty close. It's just a matter of going through them. In reverse if you start FROM stylepicker you will only hear the chords that BIAB selected to play. Most of the time they are far different than the song you actually want to try. That's why I say type in the chords to the song FIRST. Remember it's not the KEY you're after but more so the pattern that is like the song you're after. In my video when I did "Tell It Like It Is" I used the original sheet music chords and key then listened for pattern that gave me that Aaron Neville type rhythm. That's why I demonstrated in the video the song chords against different patterns. As far as key change the AI does that very well. I'm not sure if you're familiar with my cover of the song "Love on a 2 Way Street" (it's in the forum under BIAB on YouTube) but if so it started with the sheet music chords, finding a pattern (in this case I wanted a Jazz flavor), then changing the key to something I felt comfortable singing.

I hope I didn't ramble :-) Thanks for smiling at my video. Yes it is for beginners. I remember when I started with BIAB and how frustrated I was because everybody said it was just "elevator" music. LOL

Thanks Henry. That’s helpful. It’s the human advantage of auditioning styles using elements of the real song that is important.

I had misunderstood and thought you were saying that it was BIAB that was more likely to find better suggestions if you entered the chords first. That would have required artificial intelligence that I didn’t think it had.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
