Hi,
This came up in an arrangement of America, The Beautiful.
The music is written in B flat. There is voice, Piano, and bass clef. There is also chord symbols for guitar above the treble staff.
The chord symbol in question is written as Abo7 (small little o top left of the 7) which means A flat diminished seventh chord to me. It could also be written as Abm 7 b5.
Are both correct notation? If not why?
Second question...When someone says (Speaking not written) A flat diminished to you do you assume half diminished or fully diminished?

I used to know all this... let see if I get it right.
Abo7 would designate a full diminished chord - Root, third,flat 5 and b b 7 (flat dominate).
Abo7(with a line through the o) is half diminished chord also called a m7b5. Root, third, flat 5 and flat 7.
Oh and regarding which to play when a diminished chord is called... generally up to you.

A Dim7 and a minor7b5 are not the same chord
A diminished 7th has a double flatted 7th in it. Effectively a 6th.
The min7b5 has a flatted seventh
All the other partials are the same in both chords
The little circle chord symbol is the diminished figure.
So Ab B D F makes up the Ab dim chord. Its a symmetrical chord so the chord can be correctly named after any note it it. If you play guitar its why the shapes repeat themselves every minor 3rd (3 frets).
The Min7b5 chord has an Eb for the 7th,
I'm pretty sure that is correct, but no doubt someone will correct me if I have strayed from the path of harmonic righteousness.

OK, I understand now.
If I drop everything a half step but the root I get a fully diminished chord.
Not dropping the dominant seventh produces the minor 7 flat five.
It is easy if you are a guitar player to get confused because so few of us are able to read standard notation. Even if we do read, other than Tab, outside a studio I don't recall ever seeing sheet music and even then it would be more common to use Nashville Number System.
America, The Beautiful is a common song to play on both guitar and piano. On guitar I would generally just play the chords. If I had occasion to solo I would most likely play the vocal line. There are many things that could be done for a solo to include several double stops. I try to keep it pretty simple because a few people get bent out of shape if you do much in the way of embellishments. It is a nationally loved song...so don't be making no reggae version...lol
All of these arcane questions I am asking are because I am trying to teach myself to play piano.
