I wanted to use the plugin as a "scratchpad" for auditioning some MIDI supertracks (but this question could apply to any MIDI tracks). When I add them to the "Extras" tab, they all come in with "Channel 8" indicated. So I can't audition/compare them individually, as they are all routed via channel 8 to whatever soft synth I have receiving the plugin's MIDI output on that channel. Any way to change the default channel??

By any chance are you using the Soloist track for your tests? PG Music has assigned MIDI channel 8 as a default to the Soloist channel.
Every Band-in-a-Box track, except the audio track, has a default MIDI channel assignment. Press Ctrl + E to open Preferences and then select the Channels button on the top row to open the MIDI Channel Settings dialog window. Select the Harmony button and you'll discover four additional midi channels are in use. The only midi channel that does not have a default assignment is midi channel 1.
MIDI SuperTracks have several characteristics that differentiate them from the midi Band-in-a-Box normally creates for a song.
First midi SuperTracks are recorded midi phrases. The midi phrases are created from midi recordings of an instrument MIDI OUT while a session musician is playing the instrument. Regular Band-in-a-Box midi is created by a midi pattern generator.
Second PG Music associates a midi media player and a high quality, Hi-Q, midi instrument patch to each midi SuperTrack. The media player and patch is loaded at the same time as the midi SuperTrack. You don't have to select an instrument patch because PG Music already has.
This was asked for sometime back so you could do what you need to do now, but PG is very slow to catch on and never thought you would want to do that, so it does take a lot of nagging. Here's an example of it if you watch all the video below (Chords&Tracks Tab) you will see you can select to send WAV or MID (chart) then select the channel you want it sent on. To do it now you can use a midi re-channel plugin after the BiabVST or on a track you send the midi to. You can either solo the midi tracks one at a time, or just use another instance of the BiabVST.
Jim, I'm using the DAW plugin, and putting these tracks on the Extras tab. It appears to treat them all as soloist tracks when they are MIDI supertracks. That's the track name they are given when you drag them into the DAW. So it appears that Biab "legacy" behavior spills over to the DAW plugin in perhaps unexpected ways. I'll probably just revert to doing what I want in Biab rather than the plugin.

Pipeline, I saw those proposed mockups, and was hoping I was actually missing some switch in the plugin that would enable that view :-) I'm still finding it much easier to do what I want to do in BiaB and just drag my rendered audio or MIDI tracks to Cakewalk for finalizing.
My purpose in going down this path was to find some better vibes tracks, to provide a natural feel for vibe comping on some jazz-oriented tunes. I haven't found that the bossa nova rhythm vibe Realtracks work that well for me, and they don't have MIDI like the soloist ones do. I do seem to be onto something that has promise. I tried out some of the piano and organ MIDI supertracks routed thru my vibraphone plugin (Acoustic Samples' "VibSym") and found it sounded pretty good to my ears, just a little dense in places where the range was unnatural or there were more than 3 or 4 notes. So I just pulled the MIDI track into my in progress Cakewalk project, and visually removed the lower range notes via the piano roll view. That took about 10 minutes and left me with interesting comping rhythms and harmonies. I'll see how that approach holds up as I complete a few tunes, but I'm optimistic so far.

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!
For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.
Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.
Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!
Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.
Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
Update your Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows® Today!
Update your Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows for free with build 1111!
With this update, there's more control when saving images from the Print Preview window, we've added defaults to the MultiPicker for sorting and font size, updated printing options, updated RealTracks and other content, and addressed user-reported issues with the StylePicker, MIDI Soloists, key signature changes, and more!
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
