Hi,

I just put a new ssd in my computer. Formatted all drives and installed win 10 pro. Currently windows says everything is up to date. Today after turning the computer off for a while when I restarted I could not get to the log on screen. I hit the reset button on the case and everything went back to normal.

Obviously this small failure could be caused by many things, not the least of which is the old motherboard and BIOS. Possible damage caused by the overheating problems that I solved with the new heat sink.

As windows is world famous for sending updates that cause this and other issues, I got to thinking about update management. It appears you can only delay updated for 35 days.

What do you think is the best way to deal with win 10 updates?

Thanks,

Billy

Billy,

I let Microsoft have its way with Windows 10 updates. Other than having to redo settings I haven't had any issues. I presently have two computers running build 2004 of 64 bit Windows 10 Home. One is a vintage 2007 and the other is from latter 2019. They've both updated in their own time.

Thanks Jim,

I am not sure any of the issues have been caused by windows updates on the new C drive. Many people have had issues from time to time.

All of this relates to a post I made a few weeks back about building a new computer. I repaired the one I have and until today have not had any real issues. I hope this continues to be the case. Somewhere around $1500 to build a new one, money I do not want to have to spend. Many hours of re-downloading software if I need to reinstall windows.

For the moment I am letting the updated come as they will. I hope that is the best approach.

Cheers,

Billy

Billy, I've seen that happen, and I would not be concerned. Windows knows when you change hardware and it sometimes takes a reboot or two to 'catch up'.

Your new SSD - did you make that your new boot drive? I've seen it happen that Windows still has Defrag active, which should be turned off for a SSD. This isn't the cause of your problem, but something to check.

I have never had a problem letting Windows 10 update when it is ready. I've built all my own computers since 1983. The computer I am typing on now is older than my production machine, and for some reason I'm still on the Windows 10 build from May 2019. I'm guessing that Windows doesn't think something about my four-year-old hardware can handle the upgrade, so it does not push it. That's good.

Hi Matt,

Yes the SSD is the boot drive. It only up dates when I have something important going on...lol
The last windows update was 12 days ago. I will deal with Defrag.

I guess I am just a bit gun shy, hoping I made the right decision to rebuild this machine. Money is one issue but time and dealing with all the software is even a bigger deal to me.

I have been told that windows is now smart enough that I could replace the motherboard and processor and windows would start back up....never tried that.

So far so good. No new issues today.

Thanks,

Billy

EDIT: Turned off Defrag

Having learnt the hard way, its best to keep a clone of your System drive and any other music drives on an external drive. After a while, its so hard to remember what you have and have not got and if tyhe system goes down or gets stolen or the dog eats it, then you have a back up. This has saved my skin before. Most companies wil give you a new copy, but some do not notably VSL which cost a fortune

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
