I am getting this error on some downloads of real tracks sets. I read it was due to some files still being open so I have rebooted my computer and opened the downloader from file explorer without opening BIAB and still the same error.
I have been having a couple of issues with BIAB lately in that it hangs when rendering a file to mp3 and the same issue when generating tracks with the VST plug in in Ableton.
I have the program installed on an external drive USB and I wondered if all these problems could be related to that?
Video Track. Thank you for the reply. I am also in Melbourne. Please see my answers below.
What version of BiaB do you have, and is it the latest available patch?
BIAB 2020 with the latest patch updated.
Could you advise which specific RealTracks sets, and what method you used to install? E.g. manually? through the BiaB Updater program?
Using the PG music Download Manager. There are 8 sets out of 80 that I get the error. They are realTracks sets from 301 to 309, 310 to 314 etc up to 352. All the others below that have installed fine.
If you download one of the failed the RealTracks set again from the PG Music web site, does it give the same install error result?
Yes
I have had a few different goes at this over a period of time with no luck so I thought someone on the forum might have an idea.
Maybe try downloading them directly from your account at pgmusic.com vs using the installer. (Your login for the store side could be different than the forums)
Make your sound your own! .. I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome
Right click on the Band-in-a-Box program desktop shortcut icon and select "Run As Administrator".
To prevent future issues, right click on the program desktop shortcut Select Properties. Select the "Compatibility" tab. Select the "Change Settings For All Users" button Enable "Run This Program As An Administrator"
Code 5 just means that the installation process was aborted for some reason. This could be caused by a number of things. Find the installer file (outside of Band-in-a-Box / download manager) i.e. just navigate to the file in Windows Explorer, realtracks301-309.exe, and double-click to run it. Write down what the exact error message is, even better, take a screenshot of it. You can attach a screenshot to your reply by clicking on the File Manager link.
Thanks Andrew. I did that and got the following message:
D:\bb\Demos\RealTracks - Demos\Guitar, Baritone Electric, Rhythm Mod Funk1NoteMark Ev 16 110#3251 band.wma
An error occurred while trying to rename a file in the destination directory: MoveFile failed; code 82 The Directory cannot be created.
Click Retry to try....
I apologise for my lack of computer tech skills. I could not find the File Manager Link
Cheers

The code 82 error (The directory or file cannot be created) does sound like a privilege issue similar to what Jim mentioned. Can you try right-clicking on the exe file and selecting Run as Administrator, similar to this:
BIAB & RB2024 Win.(Audiophile), Sonar Platinum, Cakewalk by Bandlab, Izotope Prod.Bundle, Roland RD-1000, Synthogy Ivory, Kontakt, Focusrite 18i20, KetronSD2, NS40M Monitors, Pioneer Active Monitors, AKG K271 Studio H'phones
The installers are only ever run with administrator privileges so that wouldn't be it.
Is your external hard drive formatted FAT32? If so, it could be hitting a limit with the number of files... Right-click on the drive in Explorer (which is your D: drive according to the error message), and select Properties. See if the File System is listed as FAT32 or NTFS. It should ideally be NTFS...
It is an older drive so I have ordered a new one to replace it. I should receive it later this week so I will try and do a clean install on the new drive. I am hoping that when I do that I won't have this problem.

Thanks for that clarification Andrew.

You can reformat a drive as NTFS (right-click | format --> select quick format), but this does delete everything on the disk. To install on your new disk, instead of running the installers again, you could simply copy the bb folder from the old to the new disk (this will probably take a few hours since you are copying from an older disk which is likely USB 2. You may want to set the control panel power settings to make sure that the computer doesn't go into a sleep mode)
Once copied, you can then continue by running the installers that failed previously.

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!
Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.
Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
Update your Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows® Today!
Update your Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows for free with build 1111!
With this update, there's more control when saving images from the Print Preview window, we've added defaults to the MultiPicker for sorting and font size, updated printing options, updated RealTracks and other content, and addressed user-reported issues with the StylePicker, MIDI Soloists, key signature changes, and more!
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
