I am using the Xpand!2 VST and wish to utilise all 4 channels. I've had this working in RB but I'm not clear how I did it. When I tried to do this a second time a ran into a problem.

Having set up the first track to Xpand!2 on a track, I selected channel 1 for this track to match the first channel of the VST. The VST was connected to Port 20.

Now that the VST has been loaded, I just want to route another three channels - 2, 3 and 4 to the already loaded VST. But, I seem to load a new copy each time. Is there a way to achieve this (other than selecting VST and routing it to the default. I though I could just select Port 20 for each of these other tracks and then simply vary the channel number. However, the port select does not give me that choice, it only allows me to select an instrument. If I choose Xpand!2 I get a new copy.

Thanks

If you select Port 20 and it assigns a synth, then you select another track and assign it to port 20 it does not create another instance of the synth here.

Actually, the Port number in the drop down to select it now should show the synth loaded in that slot (not the port number anymore, see image below)
Can you post screen shots of how you are doing this?

Usually this problem is solved by making sure you have a patch assigned to that MIDI channel in the synth.
Many tracks can use one port (the same synth), but the synth needs to be capable and set up to handle the MIDI channels those tracks are sending it.
Assigning a MIDI channel is separate from Port.

You can use the free Reastream VST to send audio or midi, using Element VST along with them.

Thank you for the detailed information rharv. I think this is how I got it to work initially but I wasn't sure. I had loaded Xpand!2 into one track. I selected this from the list VSTs that I had previously used in RB. Now, I go to a new track. But this time I select the Port entry and the list with Xpand!2 is now selected. Now both tracks are using the same Port and all I have to do now is change the channel to suit the one of the 4 available on Xpand!2.

Another way I found was to simply duplicate the track that had the original Xpand!2 on it. This works with both tracks using the same Port.

Also, when you say about having a patch set up in the VST beforehand, I'm not sure that I understand this. I can't load a patch until the VST has been instantiated on the track! But at least now it's clearer in my mind about how it works.

Thanks

'beforehand' would mean before you try send it MIDI and expect to hear it, not before you set it up to do so <grin>

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
