So.... It's been a while since I have been able to record something new. Just a lot going on.

I heard someone make a comment the other day similar to the title of this song and thought... that would be a cool song.

So here it is.

A few things to note.

1. Quite a bit of this is one take and done. Vocals and guitar parts.

2. There's warts I didn't opt to fix. No vocal correction whatsoever.

3. I'm showcasing a new modeling amp in this one. I used the Spark amp with a clean rhythm, a crunchy undercurrent in a few places,
it's not that evident, and a country crunch on the lead. Using the Modern tele on the strat pickup...

4. All 3 guitar tracks are me, and I'm also playing the piano parts and that was also a one take almost disaster. Cakewalk Sound Center Grand piano.

5. BB is providing the drums and the bass which is a Texas Rock style bass and something in 8 rock drums.

Flip Phone

Flip phone guy in a smart phone world

I wear my bluejeans every single day of the week,
and a flannel shirt is my kind of chic
You won't see me wearing satin or silk oh no
I have a ball cap perched up on my head
My favorite Tshirt color is red I drive an F-150 with a 6' bed.

I'm just a flip phone guy living in a smart phone world
Technology has me all twisted up, leaving my head in a whirl
I'd rather listen to a (my) radio playing George Jones, Conway or Merle
I'm just a flip phone guy in a smart phone world

A buddy of mine said he'd give me a call, later in a video chat
well excuse me friend but I don't know, what the hell you're talking about
Yeah I've heard about twitter and a couple of those things, that I just don't understand
Just call me up on the telephone, family plan.

Hope you got a smile and enjoyed it.

Nothing but a suggestion that it might have been removed by the user.
But then if you're a flip phone guy it kinda makes sense!

Hi Herb,

that's something I really like a lot.

Love that rpough overall sound; that new amp shines, you sing and play well and the whole thing rolls. Luckily I could hold myself back from flipping out.

Seriously: real good stuff !!!

Stefan

The guy behind the Spark sounds good!
Fun song.
A lot of my stuff is one and done so, I enjoy that feel/sound in your song.
Having said that, I believe if you polished this up a bit, you could have a hit on your hands.

Hi Herb
Great lyrical hook and love the 'live' feel (your vocal sounds just fine to me). Much enjoyed.

Excellent, love the live instruments and the topic. Don't know how anyone gets anything done with those tiny keyboards on a phone. Gotta have a desktop.

Herb,

A fun song. Good hook idea.

Piano and bass sound good. Vocals and harmonies sound good.
The rhythm guitar is somewhat overpowering - the EQ highs are so bright they are uncomfortable to listen to. It often drowns out everything else.
Lead sounds good.

Thanks... I'm just starting to scratch the surface of what this new amp can do. It has hundreds of possibilities with the stock amps and pedals in it. And everything is customizable and saveable to the several channels in it. It gives me some of that Fender crispness that I don't get from the other amps I have.

I tend to do a lot of one shot takes but I then spend time editing.... I did not do that editing time with this. That left a lot of rough edges in the mix. Everything from notes that were off or missing to vocals that are rough. It's been a bit hectic around here so maybe I will get the time to rework it and fix the things people are commenting on and things that I hear that aren't like I'd like to to be.

Guitarhacker,

Terrific idea for a song, great hook. I like the vibe of this all the way through. Guitars are really good, particularly that lead solo. Some fine-tuning would really make it pop, but stand really solid on its own as is. Well done!

All my best,

Deej

Guitarhacker,
The title brought me here, the music and lyrics kept me...LOL
Personally, I often get a lot of crap for still having a flip phone. And to be honest, I'm about ready to chuck it and go back to just having a land line. I somehow survived close to 35 years without a cell phone. I think I'll be okay, Ha!

Cool tune, thanks for posting. I enjoyed the listen!

Hi Herb,

I've been really enjoying your recent work and this is no exception.

Warts or not, it has a raw sort of urgency to it, which is refreshing
in these days of everything being processed to death.

Great lyric - something which we can all relate to, one way or the other!

Oh, and yes, excellent guitar sound.

Loved it.

Yep... I feel you on the tiny keyboard... but they sure beat the old ones where you had to press the button several times because each button represented 3 letters plus numbers. And intuitive autocorrect is the worst.... I have learned that one MUST, absolutely MUST take the time to proofread before you hit send....

Thanks for listening

Every now and then I get a good idea. Thanks for listening. I'll be tweeking the guitar and the new amp as I go along. Still searching for that elusive tone that translates well to the digital medium.

Man I appreciate the words. THis was one of those songs that just kinda happened. I heard the title in something that someone said and sat down to work on it and it kinda just fell out of the sky. I like it when that happens. Such a cool experience.

Thanks.

Seriously - this song is on fire. I'm in agreement with the other folks who commented. I'm no producer but I do have a knack for hearing the hits that may be somewhat hidden behind the production, and this is definitely one of those. As you said, a lot of this is "one and done" but that hook in the chorus you have in there is undeniable. The lyrics are just a blast, and had me laughing while I was rocking out to the tune.

I could totally hear this being performed as a duet by a couple country western heavies like Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, and I can pretty much guarantee you that if they cut a track using your song, it would be on the Country Hot 100 (or whatever they call it these days).

Loved this - so much fun and undeniably catchy!

I really enjoyed this Herb. It's got a great 'live' sound that we often lose in over-producing.
Loved the song - the lyrics made me smile - and the guitars and your playing sound great.

Oh, how I remember the days of flip phones. I miss my LG Rumor 2 and my even older Nokia sometimes, not going to lie. I had the Rumor 2 for a good six years or more until it gave up the ghost. I'm a pretty tactile person and I miss the feeling of keys under my fingers, but I do like the display on touch screens. I don't like the direction they're going with the beveled edges and glass that curves around the corners on the newer Samsung models and how it feels like phones don't last nearly as long anymore. I have never cracked a single phone until this new one because of the wrap-around edges for the screen on my phone. It does make me miss the days of flip phones quite a bit, but what can you do?

I love the song. Really fun to listen to and I bet just as fun to have made. Thanks for sharing.

Very good guitar and piano work and vocals are nice too.
Its topical too, can see this getting a radio play.

Enjoyed the listen

Hello Guitarhacker,

What a fun idea! You heard the words flip phone and there you got yourself a lovely old-fashioned rocker!
And you also got Ember telling how sad she became when the flip phone era ended and she had to deal with edgy Samsung glass phones (an idea for a new rocker?).

It was very enjoyable listening to. I agree with Floyd you have to adjust some (volume) buttons, but easy on that. The rocking sound must stay! Good vocals too!

As soon as I saw the title, I knew that this would be a fun song and there would be a clever set of lyrics. Live it. Good clean fun! I could go back to a flip phone. Heck, I could go back to a rotary dial phone.

Right up my alley Herb!! If I ever get a cell phone, it will be a flip phone! It seems to me that the smarter phones get, the dumber people get. Frequently I'm the only one in the room who isn't locked down into the virtual world......won't go down without a fight! LOVE THIS!! Take care. Greg

My flip phone was a Motorola 710. Bluetooth ready and very cool at the time. I felt like Capt Kirk every time I flipped it open.... Beam me up Scotty... Like all good things.... it had to end as well. I used to hate trying to text with those old phones.

So far.... i have never lost one, dropped it into water, or cracked the screen..... my daughters have done all 3 and some, several times. Now they are adults and can break their phones as often as they wish.

Thanks for listening and commenting and that walk down memory lane.

Yeah... I forget who I heard say that.... but that's how you get new song ideas.... Just keep your ears open and be tuned into the world around you. You never know when that next good idea is going to come. Oh yeah.... and then you gotta remember it later when you sit down to write. More than once I sat down and thought.... I know that was a great hook but what the heck was it now?????? But not this time.

Thanks

You don't have a cell phone? Wow... I envy you. Glad you enjoyed the song.

Nope.... I never had a bag phone but I know a few who did. My first cell was a truck mounted phone. I still have the same number today as when I first got that truck phone.... and it was from Radio Shack. I think it was 360 communication then, which became Alltel, and then Verizon. I left Verizon a year ago and went to Cricket. Better price and a better deal. Anyway.... I started back in the pay per minute days. Your phone bill was always a surprise and often, not a good surprise. The flip phone was several non-truck mounted phones later.... My father in law had a bag phone. I don't think he ever used it. He was a trash pile picker and it was in the garage among the junk we threw out after he passed away. Chances are good he picked it off of someones trash because I never saw him using it.

Funny story.... He left us 2 garages filled floor to ceiling with junk. Before he passed away, we decided to start clearing out the junk. We started hauling stuff out, dozens of lawnmowers, broken tools, just anything that was obviously broken junk, and piling it beside the street. The city had announced a special clean up day, so his wife figured she'd take advantage of the city's offer. We had a pile that was 4 feet high, 10 feet wide and 25 feet long. He threatened to call 911 on us for throwing away his valuable stuff. But before long, I kid you not... people started showing up in pickup trucks and with trailers and started loading his broken junk to carry it home to add to their pile. By the time the city got there to collect it, the people had removed a good solid 50% of the junk. Occasionally, he would find something really nice or valuable in his trash pickings.... but most of it was junk.

My wife had an old Nokia phone that finally died.... she had to upgrade to a smart phone and just the the old Nokia.... never keeps it turned on unless she needs to use it to call out.

Thanks for listening.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
