Zampler-RX: It's not Kontakt, Structure, Halion, Aria, Wusik, et. al., but its simple features are straight-forward, it definitely serves as well or better than some of the dedicated VST ROMplers you come across, and it has a few tricks of its own---and it can load and use sfz and REX files (even auto-slicing the latter). I did come across a number of notable patches. To start, here's how you can get this freebie with six free and legal sound banks.

(1) Go here:
https://www.plugins-samples.com/

Scroll down to this message:

REGISTER FOR FREE

Register. Once you register you'll be taken to a subscription page. YOU DO NOT NEED TO SUBSCRIBE. Click on "My Account" and you will be presented with a link for the download ("Zampler//RX - Welcome Pack")---a RAR file containing Zampler and 4 free sound banks.

(2) Go here:
https://www.pluginboutique.com/product/1-Instruments/5-Sampler/951-Zampler

If you don't have a PluginBoutique account, you'll have "Sign Up" to create one. Once you have an account, log in and you'll be able to use the link above to add Zampler + 2 Sound Banks to your download area and you will be automatically directed to it. Note that you should select the Windows or Mac button to download the correct version.

(3)
After you extract/unzip the archives, you'll have soundbank folders and installation folders. The extracted sound bank folders take up about 20GB and can go anywhere you want (e.g., your data drive, external HD). I just created a [Zampler] folder for them on an external HD. One of Zampler DLL files (32- or 64-bit) gets placed where you usually place your VST dll files (e.g., C:\Program Files\VSTplugins). It's now ready to use in your DAW.

FWIW, the PluginBoutique sound banks are minimal (about thirty patches each), one sound bank being almost exclusively drum kits. The four Beat sound banks have more, and more varied, patches.

13 more free and legal Zampler-RX libraries/soundbanks:

9 free libraries/soundbanks:
https://www.zampler.de/
Scroll down a little. There's a frame on the right that says "Free Sound Libraries". Click on the one(s) you want. The sound banks contain from 7 to 112 patches for a total of 425 (sounds, drum kits, loops/slices)---A decent variety with utility.

The Trickster: Another free Zampler library (if you specify 0.00 for the price):
https://sellfy.com/zamplersounds/p/the-trickster/

Electro Encounter: Yet another free Zampler library (if you specify 0.00 for the price):

Two more free Zampler libraries (Sonic Wave & E-lec-tro) from CHE/Sonic Sirius (~146 patches):

If you have trouble locating the libraries/link, go here:

The blue rectangle labeled "DOWNLOAD (67.89MB)" is the only link you want---everything else is click-bait.

Jim: You're welcome. Make note that the selfy.com/zamplersounds website periodically selects and offers a library for free. Also, the Sonic Sirius website is a great source for good free preset libraries for a variety of synths (often with "CHE" in the title when included by the actual developer of the synth in their factory library). The Sonic Sirius is also a great source for softsynth links, "Best ### VST" videos, etc.

FWIW, there can be some un-necessary fluff included in some of the libraries. The functional content of a Zampler expansion library folder consists of: Another folder and an fxb file with matching names. It should look like this:
[FolderName]
FolderName.fxb

Sometimes it contains a Sample Folder, simply named "Samples":
[FolderName]
[Samples]
FolderName.fxb

I hope this makes using it a little easier.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
