I haven’t been able to locate a program that can read Music XML files for syntax errors.
MuseScore comes closest.
Other music notation programs I’ve tried just give an abort message with no indication of what the error might be.
I can read the code manually but there must be an editor out there that Google isn’t finding?

Are you looking for something that will read well-formed XML that happens to be Music XML, or validate Music XML? The Music XML XSD is available. I'd assume that a "generic" XML validator could use the XSD to verify the Music XML is well formed.

Thanks, David. I've been all over that site and I don't think they have such a tool. As far as I can tell, individual vendors make their own code to import Music XML files, and almost none provide any help if the syntax is wrong. MuseScore 3 is the only one I've found so far that will at least give you the line where it failed.

Hey Matt, would something like Notepad++ be of any value? Some apps like that will color coordinate certain types of commands and if something would be incorrect may produce an underscore squiggly line. Maybe it would help for that visual reference part, not so much on error checking.

Thanks Steve. Yes, this is in the right direction. Most of the time I use a special editor for programming that does exactly what you say. I use the Coffee Cup HTML Editor for most work. I have another editor for Pascal and Delphi etc. This is very much like what I'm hoping to find, an editor that does understand Music HTML like those editors understand the form and syntax of computer coding.

You can use the Notepad++ Plugin Manager to install XML Tools. Then load your Music XML file, and from the menubar, choose Plugins | XML Tools | Check XML Now. It'll find malformed XML, but I couldn't get it to generate an error when I modified the XML file to have valid XML but invalid MusicXML. There's a link to the DTD in start of MusicXML documents, but it didn't seem to be used by the validator. When I copied the DTD to the local directory and modified the reference, it complained that the .MOD files referenced in the DTD couldn't be found locally. I suspect if I made all the DTD documents local, it would work. But I didn't have time to dig deeper than that.

What's frustrating is that I've seen videos of NPP validating the XML against the XSD. It just doesn't seem to work for me.

As far as I know MuseScore is the closest you can come, unfortunately - I looked deeper into it and that's all I can find. Odd nothing else seems predominant for this.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first?
