Hi folks,

I accidentally created a vocal sound I want to explore more. I also hear it in some JJ Cale songs and ZZ Top's - I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide (maybe) as an example. It may be that the vocal track is duplicated and slightly offset to create a bit of a hollow depth or resonance (maybe some reverb added) that has a layed-back kind of cool. haha if that describes it well

Anyways, if you know what I am trying to get at, I would like to learn some mixing details on how to create. I typically record vocals in Garageband. If it is a duplicated track that is offset...would like to get some practical tips without going thru the motions of reinventing the wheel.

from what i have tried there is a sweet spot around a duplicated vocal with a 0.013 second offset

Happy Holidays

Sorry I can't help you.

J.J. Cale is one smooth voice and guitar.
If you look at his onstage setup its pretty simple. He sounds the same in the studio so I'm guessing thats a clue.
A shure sm57, a small amp, a little reverb,and just a laid back approach.
As cool as it gets.

Greats like Eric Clapton and Mark Knopfler both have said they wish they could sound like JJ Cale.
In an interview for a joint effort (Road to Escondido i believe) J.J. ribbed Eric saying he finally got his wish to make an Eric Clapton record that sounded like a J.J Cale album, although he needed JJ on the album to do so (paraphrased).

Precious few people on the planet can poke fun at Eric Clapton for his guitar playing.

Either Netflix or Amazon has a recent documentary out on JJ Cale

RIP the man from Tulsa.

Good Luck with your effort

btw, there's a "Magnolia" cover I did as tribute on the site link on my profile. Instrumental, no vocals.

Ya super cool JJ...I had the Cale tribute album by Clapton.

On ZZ Top, there is either flanging or phaser being applied to the lead vocal.

here's how I would apply it:

1. Copy your lead vocal track to a new track (This is just for safety sake - your ultimate 'undo' function)

2. Mute the original, and apply a flanger (or chorus) effect with the rate set to less than one cycle per second (less than 1 Hz), keep the depth on the flanger effect pretty shallow, but make the mix 100% wet or nearly 100%.

See how that works for you.

Alternatively, try the same with a phaser effect. The key to the slow liquid sound is to keep the rate slow, and the depth shallow.

Thank you Scott....I am going to try the flanger (or chorus) method. I dont think i have these effects on my BIAB or Garageband but will look into how to make it happen.
Happy Holidays!!!

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
