as an acoustic player in the 60s it was a straight choice Martin or Gibson. but electric it was gibson or fender.

how come Martin have never really had a success with electrics? i can understand fender not doing acoustics - leo's genius was factory production methods like bolt on necks. but martin just seem to have failed whereas gibson have a foot in both camps.

Howdy Bob....

That's a curious question.
My shot from the hip....Martin may have determined early on that entering the electric market would be a very long and expensive marketing road to hoe having to compete with the well entrenched/proven leaders in the market.
Late to that market party so to speak.

From my POV Martin acoustics seem to cater best and be most desired in the country/bluegrass genres.
So...they decided to stay with what they knew and already did quite well.

Personally, I chose my '73 Guild acoustic back in '78 (my avatar) over the Martin/Gibson choices when I purchased my D40 after comparing all three hands on.

Still..it's curious to me what criteria Martin used to NOT enter the electric market.

I couldn't answer the question but here's a bump. smile

Carry on....

yes when i was learning guitar in the 60s the choices of top quality guitars were limited in the UK until yamaha entered the market. most folk musicians aspired to martins but a lot of ragtime and finger pickers chose gibsons. i saw ralph mctell and sandy denny live and they played gibsons. the usual choice was the j45. however two friends of mine who played in one of the uk's top bluegrass bands chose guilds too. not sure if there was a price difference in the 60s but guild were among the 'real quality american acoustic' choices.

i know from mike longworth's history of martin book that martin did make electrics. but they never seem to have caught on. i think i did catch sight of one played by kid rock on a willie nelson and friends concert but that's all.

and interestingly, neil young played a martin acoustic but a les paul electric.

and looking at pictures of the martin electrics they just don't look rock and roll!

Actually Fender did dabble in acoustics back in the early 60's till around 1971 when production ceased. I owned a Fender Shenandoah acoustic back in 1970. Not the greatest for flat-picking since it really had an electric fender neck and a thru-the-body truss rod that was like a sewer pipe.

There are many reasons why any company might make a really good guitar or not. But the main factor is profit or lack of profit.

I don't have any personal experience with acoustic guitar made before 1970. I also have very little idea what was available in the UK in those years.

While then as today people may mention Martin or Gibson, and both companies made some good guitars there were many excellent small lutheries on the continent and therefor available to buyers in the UK.

Guild along Martin has been a common guitar played by professionals here in the United States in all sorts of music.

Most likely the existence of guitars like Gurian are not well known. Several other really high end guitar makers exist and sell to pros.

To tell the truth, the best acoustic guitar I ever had in my hand came from a no name little known commercial luther from Holland. It was just a fluke, an accident of production, everything just came together by accident. I acquired the guitar from a pawn shop for next to nothing and gave it to a well known Texas singer/songwriter.

From an electric guitar perspective I really never knew what a really great electric guitar was until I met Tom Anderson. I was like most people enamored by the likes of Fender and Gibson. Same thing with acoustic until I met Michael Gurian.

Most great guitars come from people who are more driven to make great guitars than make money.

Yes, at the end of the day it is always about money.

Cheers,

Billy

Fender made acoustics in the late sixties and seventies. The red, white and blue acoustic Buck Owns played on the television show, Hee Haw, was a Fender.

Fender presently makes acoustics: +++ Fender Acoustics +++

Many times a guitar shop stocks what sells. Fender acoustics don't have a lot of resell value.

I tried to buy a Stratacoustic if you all remember. And UPS crushed it en route. If I shop for one again it will be a Govin. But I doubt I will do that.

I've never thought that Martin had much more than a passing interest in electric guitars.

They focused on flat top guitars and made a name for themselves internationally.

That name is also truly deserved. Nothing quite sounds like a D-18, D-28 or D-35.

That's an interesting question. I've played probably hundreds of Martins in my time working at the local music shop, every one of them was great. I think as others mentioned it's just lack of interest.

As for Gibson acoustics, most I've played were not terribly good, though there's one I played years ago that actually stood out. Comfortable guitars, not bad sounding, but just kinda meh for me.

Then again, I don't go for the big G or F myself - I've got mostly Ibanez and Jackson electrics, and a Charvel acoustic funnily enough.

If you ever want to get some great insight into when and why certain stringed instruments became MUST HAVES, spend some time reading George Gruhn's books and articles. Would you believe that there was a time that you almost couldn't give away a 59 Les Paul? Then Mike Bloomfield picked up a used one and started playing it in Paul Butterfield's band and everyone had to have one. Martin was the once the MUST HAVE mandolin....yes, I said MANDOLIN, and then one day Bill Monroe walked into a pawn shop and bought a Gibson F5. Same story with the Gibson Grenada Mastertone after Earl Scruggs got his hands on one.

The popularity of certain instruments over the years has often depended upon a well known trendsetter buying the instrument and people wanting to copy the sound and look.

fender did make an acoustic in the late 60s called the Newporter )obvious links to the Newport folk festival). looked odd to see an acoustic with a fender headstock. dave davies of the kinks played one on top of the pops in the uk when he sang his solo hit 'death of a clown'.

It was news to me to learn that the headstock that became iconic on Fenders was actually designed for Martin on a restaurant placemat by Merle Travis. Merle's son, Thom Bresh, still plays it.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
