Hi All,

I wrote this song for a friend who was going through a difficult time in her personal life.

Here it is:- Till The Sun Shines Again

Take a listen please and let me know what you think.

Regards
michee

Hi Michee,

Another enjoyable listen Thank you for posting it.

I must say, your sense of production is becoming increasingly well-honed. I'm impressed. I think you've done a great job. If this was my mix, the only thing that I'd play around with a bit more would be to reduce the instrumental line-up in the verses and then add them in chorus. That's just me, though. I like to add a bit fuller sound in the chorus (not always, though) so that the chorus feels like it lifts.

As I said at the start, though, I really enjoyed this latest work.

All the best,
Noel

Michee,

all in all a very nice and uplifting song. I'm sure your friend will be encouraged by it.

Musically, here are my thoughts...

vocals: singing is your strong point. You sing on key and with a very pleasant style. I would commit dastardly crimes if that would get me a voice like yours.

Composition: your songs tend to flow well and have a cohesive quality to them. They are very easy to listen to, and generally "catchy"

mixing/mastering: not my strong suit..I don't always hear the things others hear, so somebody else would have to comment. Sounded reasonably well separated and "not muddy" on my end

Instrumentation: IMO, the weak point of this song. If you listen to professionally recorded music, it seems there is rarely a song where all the instruments play all the time. Typically, they fade in and out for emphasis and effect. The tell-tale sign of a BIAB composition is that all the instruments play all the time. The good news is that this is very easy to remedy in Real Band. You already did all the hard stuff, the stuff many of us can't do nearly as well as you. But, even if you choose not to make that change, it is certainly a pleasant song exactly as-is. But I think mixing up the instrumentation a bit would make the song sound more "arranged"

Content: I always ask myself, "what songs are appropriate for a person my age to write?" At different stages in life, different things seem important enough to write about. With age comes wisdom, and I think that songs of encouragement and commentary are good choices for anybody whose life has given them something worth passing along. Good call.

Solo: I liked the guitar solo.. did you play that? Or is that a real track soloist? very nice touch. As a guitar player, it caught my attention.

Summary: your songs are always a treat, Michee.

Great voice and outstanding lyrics.

I agree with the others in that the instrumentation needs thinning in parts. Both Noel and Pat have great suggestions.

I really like this one and I think making those suggested changes will take this on over the top IMHO.

Noel96 Thank you for your kind comments.

Not being a musician i.e. able to play lots of instruments, I do have some difficulty with regard to correct composition/instrumentation.
I will endeavour to keep learning

Pat Marr Thank you for your detailed and kind comments.

I didn't play guitar on this song, it was played by a friend using the Roland VG88.

Thank you for your kind comments.

Great job with this song Michee. You are a songwriter.

Put that producer hat on when you hit the mixing desk. Most songs "build" up and down etc . . . by thinning the herd. You could get away with just an acoustic guitar for x amount of bars on this one. Then bring in the drums, bass and electric as to "building" the song in the 2nd chorus etc . . . . Just some ideas for ya.

But, this one is a keeper. Vocal was spot on mate. Great song !!!

Great stuff Michee, I liked that. Superb pop voice you have! Also, the guitar intro and solo are great hooks, excellent.
If I was pushed to find any issues:
- As already mentioned, the song doesn't build, the instrumentation doesn't tell me where the verses and choruses are, in fact even after four listens I wasn't sure. Is it one verse followed by lots of repeats of the chorus? I'd change the instrumentation to provide aural clues in arrangements like this where the verses and choruses have similar chords. e.g. bring the strings in only on the chorus, and/or add vocal harmonies just in the chorus. The most common arrangement trick is to have the instrumentation stop with a cymbal crash on the downbeat of the last bar of a verse, then there'd be a short drum fill followed by the chorus beginning.
- The cowbell is a good touch but it only plays every other bar when it should be constant (when it's there). (As the saying goes "More cowbell!") Maybe the cowbell should provide the main clue we're in a chorus?
- The drums should come up considerably. Drums are the main constituent of pop songs. They should be the same level as the bass, as that comprises the rhythm section, but here it sounds like the poor drummer is in the next room!
- It wouldn't do any harm for the guitar to drop in occasional short 'punctuation' licks. After the guitar intro and then the solo I found myself wanting to hear a wee but more.

John

Michee,

Another great tune you have put together - the vocals are always wonderful and they seem a little hidden in the mix. Follow some of the above suggestions and let that voice shine through.

Thanks for sharing

I will take all your ideas on board.

Thank you for your kind comments.
It is always a struggle to get the vocals just right.
You think you have found the secret but when you start a new song you have to start anew.

bobcflatpicker

Thank you for seeing that there was indeed a message in the song.

Michee,
You just get better and better. Trax gave you some good advice on building flow for an intimate song like this. The only nit pik I would offer is that I would have swapped a couple of lines in your chorus so that I rhymed "hand" with "again" - hand till the sun shines again - instead of using the more formal sounding "pain" - pain till the sun shines again - pronunciation. But that's just semantics.
Great job.

Very nice indeed. I thoroughly enjoyed this.
It could have been on the Beatles "Rubber Soul" album, as far as I'm concerned.

Keep it up.

I have been recording my next song trying to put all the advice that everyone has given into the song.
I have even tried some ideas in the lyrics books you recommended.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
