https://soundcloud.com/torrey-bliss/big-paper-bible

He can't just write his notes in any bible...Its got to be a $1 paper cover bible!

This is a rework of a song David Snyder and I did a couple years ago. David had the idea for this and gave me the opportunity to put it together! We both wrote lyrics for this. David wrote the first and last verses and chorus. I wrote the second verse and pre-chorus sections. David contributed the sitar sound and some of the zany vocal stuff that make this song happen for me! I got a new Mojave Audio condenser mic this week and used this tune for my first song with it. This one has the most tracks I've used in a song, almost 50. I switched out the drums from the original song and replaced with some that give the song more snap. Some folks said they hear Beatles references in this...I just don't get it LOL. Actually this song has connections to 4 Beatles/McCartney songs! Two are obvious and 2 are more obscure. I really appreciate my musical brother David and his contribution to this. He's got talent!! Anyway I really appreciate you folks giving this another spin and hope you enjoy it!

BIAB - Pop Rhythm B3 Organ 686 (In the chorus section)
Drums - DOD
Me - Vocals, Guitars, Bass, Organ, Percussion and Synths
David -Vocals and Sitar

Big Paper Bible
Words and music by
David Snyder and Torrey Bliss
Copyright 2021

He's wanting a bible that he can write on
So he won't forget when his wife isn't home
To help him remember what he has done wrong
Or write the words to a new worship song
But a leather bound edition to write on is a sin
A cover made of paper is where he must begin

He wants a paper bible, big paper bible
Paper bible, big paper bible

He can't touch the one in the lighted case
Or mark it all up with what he can't erase
But help can be found at the dollar store
The place where a dollar buys you the written word
With a pack of colored pencils he's gonna change the world
With notes and commentary like we've never heard

Chorus

He's got to have it to share the good news
With anyone out there who might have the blues
It could be someone at the grocery store
He'll have the answer that they long for
He'll write it on the paper to which he will refer
To seize the opportunity to share the word

chorus

Torrey & David ...

Now, that's a real attention-getter!

Loved the chord run-up to the chorus. I'm very fond of diminished chords and this is a great example of how to use them effectively. The entire production is simply awesome - significantly above my music level. Nice vocal effects and, as always, your musicianship really shines, Torrey. And David, you write some very interesting and thought-provoking lyrics. A stellar collab! Congrats, gentlemen, on a super prject!

Wishing you both the very best in 2021.

Great collaboration! Excellent production, and wonderfully dense/elegant texture of sound, lyric, voice. Interesting and unique storyline as well. Two top-notch talents working together--what could be better than that!

Torrey and David.

Jaw-droppingly good.

Cool, cool lyric. Love the beatlesque melodies! And the complexity that goes with that. Awesome vocals.

KILLER sound. Torrey - you are a hell of a producer (and writer and singer and player). Excellent mix. You "make music" - not just "write songs"...

And there are few as original as The Mr. Snyder.

A real pleasure to hear.

Torrey & David,
That`s one of the best pop/rock productions ever heard here; every element sooo tight and energised!
The write I remember- it has humour which really adds spice to the theme and of course, is right in line with the Beatlesquesness.
An absolutely fabulous collaboration.

I agree with Floyd and I couldn't have said it so eloquently.

You both should be very proud of this one.

beatles birthday ?

The vocals sound great . Are you happy with your new mic? ( i'm in the market for one). Your considerable producer skills are evident here being able to tame 50 tracks and their attendant plug ins . Must have given your computers cpu a good workout. btw I'm told that 16G of ram is the minium for music production thes days. But I digress. I like that C A D B tension building run up to the E chorus. This song is of radio ready quality and I can imagine that if the words of the super catchy chorus were changed to a product , this song would scream out to be used as a commercial. $'s. Excellent song and production.
cheers
Gary.

Torrey and David,

that is incredibly good - like Floyd wrote: jaw-dropping.

Not a single bar I would not like tremendously; the 'Paperback Writer' style guitar riff: fantastic. Vocals lead BGV) - top notch. Great write, perfect backing track, flawless sounding - that's radio stiff, gentlemen!

A marvellous collab, gentlemen - hats off!

I think I heard a subliminal message in the first part of the song ;-).. Excellent collaboration Torrey. Super vocal and just loved the guitars in the song. Well done...

Torrey/Dave:

Love it! Love it! Love it! Love every aspect of this. Now this is my kind of song. Lush and sonically gorgeous. I detect a slight melodic similarity (not plagiarism) to a verse snippet from McCartney's "Getting Closer" in the first and third lines of each verse. Intentional homage?

Simply and extraordinary piece of work.

Well, other than having to put the monitors back on the shelf this is a heckuva production smile

50 tracks? Hahahaha ... more than five tax us.

As Janice said "a very creative ode to the Beatles." Indeed.

Great accolades have been offered before us and dittos to all.

Creativity abounds in the lyric, the aforementioned mix and the Torrey and David performances.

A big ole Wow and kudos to you both!

Ditto.... Yep. That is good. So damn creative and original. Easily one of the top 10 best I've ever heard on this forum. Loved that guitar tone.

I immediately got the Beatles vibe and I also picked up a Stixx Grand Illusion feel in a few places. Like a hint of lilac on the spring breeze.

Words of praise really can not do justice.

BTW.... Nothing in the world like a marked up, well used, paper bible.

Gary, thanks for taking time to listen and comment! Yes on Paper Back writer. If elements of "Birthday" are there it was an unconscious thing. David would have to answer on "Within You Without You". I wasn't sure what his inspiration for the Sitar parts was. So far I really like the Mojave Audio mic. I've noticed when you push it hard the highs are much smoother and won't clip as quickly as the Rode would. My Rode is a lower end model though in all fairness. Yeah I was probably a track or two away from having problems. I was holding my breath when adding the last couple tracks. Thanks and take care! T

Wow! laugh

I had read the lyrics first - something I try to avoid - but once the song kicked it, the sound was all I heard.

Really enjoyed the Beatles bits.

I don't usually force my son to listen to songs of this forum, but he had a listen and said: "That was a good one."

Wow.

Torrey + David,
I am not the right guy to comment on spiritual context, but musically totally stunning!
I read reference to Beatles, but to me it sounded more like unreleased ELO track. Clever composition and very good playing! Congrats on this remake and thank you for sharing!

Hey Torrey,

you said you don't hear the Beatles in this but I can't believe there wasn't an intentional homage to PAPERBACK WRITER... there are places near the beginning of the song where the word PAPER, the melody and the backing guitar are close enough to think instantly that's what you're shooting for.

Anyway, having said that:
I really like the way you presented the chorus. Very interesting harmonies that work. (when I say "interesting" it isn't always in a good way, but in this case it is). The way you have approached this song is so different from anything I would have thought to do that it just makes my jaw drop. Where on earth did THAT idea come from?? But the skill of the craftsman is in taking a bunch of pieces and combining them together into art.. and that, my friend, is what you have done here. I think this is an outstanding job of building a song out of various ideas presented via collaboration (something I have never learned to do to anyone's satisfaction)

The message of the song made me smile. Coming from a background of a church where everybody has a bible full of hand written notes, the idea that somebody would need a certain KIND of bible to write on seems totally believable to me. And you developed the theme credibly. Very impressed.

Some of the lyrics were laugh-out-loud funny... such as "to help him remember what he has done wrong" If religion is good at anything, its good at that.

Your ability to juggle 50 tracks and bring it to fruition without sounding like a dump truck of mud says a lot about your mixing skills.

I stopped hanging out on the forum around the time you joined, so I'm not real familiar with your work, but put my name on your list of fans. I will be watching for more from you.

Pat, I was being a bit facetious with the Beatles comment. Being a sort of "spoof " song i took a few liberties with getting close to some of their ideas on this one. Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment! I appreciate it! T

"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
