I often include "loops" in my productions.
Sometimes they are just a few added sounds.
Often (for me) they are the drums/percussion (particularly for "modern" sounds).

Another use is to set up a song with a few loops providing the entire backing and then write a lyric over them.
This is typical in today's Pop (and Country).
"Top-line writing" (we did not grow up doing that.... many of today's writers have)
in case you are not familiar with it...
https://www.berklee.edu/careers/roles/top-line-songwritervocal-producer

The new BIAB DAW plug-in can be quite useful for creating loops.
I thought I'd try it out.
Loaded the plug-in into Studio One and created several 4-bar measure loops to construct a track.
(you just keep pasting them in at the appropriate places)
Then went back and wrote a lyric to fit on top...

I'LL BE GONE

The BAND (the loops):

RealTracks in song: ~701:Bass, Electric, PopHalfNotesSync Ev 085
RealTracks in song: 2430:Guitar, Electric, Rhythm NewOrleansMardiGras Ev16 085
RealTracks in song: 2650:Guitar, Electric, Background DreamyPopBalladFillsBrent Ev 085
RealTracks in song: 2905:Guitar, Electric, Rhythm BrightBluesyPopColin Ev 100
RealTracks in song: 3442:Guitar, Electric, Rhythm BritPsycFunky Ev16 100
1758 Banjo, Rhythm, Pop16ths Ev 085
Royalty free loops (most from Studio One)

(the lyric)

I'll Be Gone

if i didn't have to be
what you expect of me
maybe i'd stop tryin' to change
who i am

that proverbial "new lease"
gotta find a little peace
i'm thinkin' memphis
or maybe birmingham

anywhere but here
i need to get my head clear
find a different direction
and a brand new start

some time to contemplate
just wipe the slate
stop looking for answers
and hide my heart

   so don't come looking
   i'll be gone, gone, gone
you can ask 'til you're blue in the face
you can search until the cows come home
   i won't be with 'em
   i'll be gone
   i'll be gone

i know a guy not far from macon
who says that he'll be taking
a trip soon
and i can come along if i'm sure

south on 65
or west on 24
one way or another
i'm heading out the door

my pockets full of chamge
it's time to rearrange
the plans i've been followin'
the course i've been on

never been to boston
or there's a cool scene in austin
some new scenery
whatever comes along

   so don't come looking
   i'll be gone, gone, gone
you can ask 'til you're blue in the face
you can search until the cows come home
   i won't be with 'em
   i'll be gone
   i'll be gone

(the wrap-up).

Hope you enjoy it.
Comments are welcome.

floyd

A most enjoyable and appealing song, great chorus that stays with you.

Nice use of loops which certainly adds to the interest, and very professionally done.

Excellent all round work (the vocal was as usual top notch).

Floyd,
Catchy and infectious with those strong simple rhymes that make the song so singeable... at least with your very capable vocal skills.
The banjo works really well- adds some country to the feel.
Knowing little about modern songwriting ways I`ll check out the link.
Very enjoyable music.

Robert

Floyd, as usual you have another hit on your hands.

Nice use of the VST and loops. I gonna have to try that.

Hi Floyd.

Berklee college is just reinventing the wheel with the cute and clever "topliner" moniker to drum up some buisness.
The modus operandi of music writing/making has shifted from humans to machines. Want a particular sound or sequence ? No problem , there are a zillion free acid loops on the net to cut and paste to your hearts content.
Berklee said “long-term success in this business comes from being able to change with the times….songwriters need to understand that music is always changing.>”
At least Berklee got that right .
Floyd wrote <"Top-line writing" (we did not grow up doing that.... many of today's writers have)>"
I repectfully dissagree . Who hasn't "tapped" the table (beats) while singing a melody in their head?

As for "I'll be gone" , my usual superlatives apply to my favourite songsmith but I will add that you are heading in the right direction smile
respect
Gary.

Man, the rhythm is very infectious!

Great song, floyd, that chorus especially stays with you.

Love what you did at the end smile

I really admire the way you are not stuck in the "old" way of doing things and continue to push the sides of the envelope trying new techniques.

And getting great results in doing so!

Thanks, Robert.
"Catchy and infectious with those strong simple rhymes that make the song so singeable"
...does a good job of describing what much of this style of writing is aiming at doing...
The link I provided was just a quick find (first thing that came up). There are likely better discussions of the form elsewhere - and some good examples on Youtube (I suppose I should have found those to post, as well...)

Every time I comment on of your songs there is a huge smile on my face brought on by the music in my ears, Floyd. Really quite amazing what you've accomplished here, Sensei (or what3ever the equivalent is for master music teacher). Outstanding example of unmatched creativity.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Hi Floyd ...

I fully agree with all Torrey said. Versatility is a good thing. I weave in and out of various genres as the mood strikes. In my opinion, there's not all that much bad music out there - just some of it isn't presented as good as it could be.

Love everything about this. And that ending is so cool!

IO write some songs in a similar manner. I often let the percussions and bass line set the direction and add and subtract various other instruments until I get the sound I want. If it's conducive to a vocal, I'll then see what i can do about that. I haven't the faintest clue how to bring in a third party loop. I just work with whatever BIAB has to offer.

Anyway, this is a terrific listen - loved the outro! Excellent work. Take care and have a tremensou 2021.

Dear Mr. Floyd. From your description you make it sound like you did the whole thing in half and hour or less. A true master of the art when you make it look easy and give out a few hints so we can all jump in and take a spin.
Love it love it love it.

Great song with a lot of energy that suits the theme of wanderlust. As always, a beautiful production. Had me humming it, that's a good sign.

I like the Big Fish loops, they inspire me. But they're expensive.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
