Thanks. MuseScore, for those who might not know, reads BIAB SGU and MGU files directly. For BIAB songs in any other notation software, you have to use MIDI or Music XML.
And MuseScore is free!
Possibly the best part for me is the community of users who post music in MuseScore format. Particularly if you are a classical musician (but it's not limited to classical) you can get some great scores there.

Hmmmm...OK Dan. I was just starting to thing that this might be something I'd like to try. Guess I'll hold off for now. Let us know when it's safe to wade in please.
Just downloaded the program after reading this and opened up a few SGU files. All they show are chords and nothing else. Not really something I can use since BIAB already has that ability to show that.
I then tried to open 5 different MGU files. The files load OK but each time I tried to play them, MuseScore crashes immediately.
The support forum says Fix version 3.6.1 is available, but I can't find it..... I suspect the fix is coming very soon. And JC, it gets a lot better than just the chord chart when it is working.
Well it no longer crashes. It was apparently a simple fix, just don't drag and drop a file from BAIB. Otherwise my older files work just fine when I open them. I wonder if the problem could be BIAB 2021? What are the chances of that? Also there are no notes in the BIAB file when it is opened, just chords. Here we go again.
OK, so you guys who still have the older version of Musescore, can you double check if BIAB 2021 is behaving with this?
I just ran a number of tests using Musescore 3.5.2 and the latest up to date BiaB and Win 10.. Here are my findings:
SGU to Musescore = only chords, no notes MID to Musescore = only notes, no chords MXL to Musescore = both notes and chords BUT all string parts were in tabs! That is a function of BiaB.
Also I had a ton of crashes that I never had before. I believe it is a problem with Musescore and the latest Win 10. If time permits I will do more investigation.
Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up. Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.
64 bit Win 10 Pro, the latest BiaB/RB, Roland Octa-Capture audio interface, a ton of software/hardware
This used to work (...last year....). So why don't you think the problem in BIAB 2021?
Quote:
SGU to Musescore = only chords, no notes - That don't sound right, I am sure this worked better in the past. MID to Musescore = only notes, no chords This does not surprise me MXL to Musescore = both notes and chords BUT all string parts were in tabs! That is a function of BiaB. This is what I saw with my short time running with the newest Musescore. the results were a mess, with only tab coming over, no notes or chords.
Just between us, I wish PGM would work on "compatibility" for all its files with other applications. A simple midi piano track which can't be moved into a notation program without errors! As others have said, "why is everything in this program such a big deal?"
Thanks Mario for checking. I don't do a lot of notation work, but when I do, I do like to see it working.
I just found this discussion because I've been away from the forums here for close to a year, so I had to comment because I had no idea that MuseScore could import SGU and MGU files. I've been using MuseScore 2.1 to create XML files of my songs for importation into BiaB, and I've been using MuseScore 3.3.4 to re-save those same song files from version 2.1 for processing with a Python script for importation into Synthesizer V (that's how I create vocals for my demos). So, this info about importing BiaB files into MuseScore may come in handy for me in the future. I'll be following this conversation. Thanks!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.
Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
Update your Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows® Today!
Update your Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows for free with build 1111!
With this update, there's more control when saving images from the Print Preview window, we've added defaults to the MultiPicker for sorting and font size, updated printing options, updated RealTracks and other content, and addressed user-reported issues with the StylePicker, MIDI Soloists, key signature changes, and more!
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
