Sarsaparilla

This is just me enjoying myself with three chords--"And I only know three chords!" laugh crazy

The lyric hook came to me last spring while I was working in the raspberry patch. I put it in my song ideas notebook and fleshed it out recently during this holiday break. I haven't had any time to be clever or melodically inventive---only a bit of time to have some fun.

For those of you outside the states who might not get my salt blast reference: In gun lore, supposedly if you fill your shotgun shells with rock salt, you create a non-lethal blast that stings like hell from the salt piercing the flesh. Please don't try this at home.

The Read Band:
RT651 Guitar, Electric, Rhythm TexasBoogie
RT654 Guitar, Electric, Rhythm TexasBoogieShuffle
RT1591 Piano, Acoustic, Rhythm TexasBluesRockShuffle
RT1586 Guitar, Electric, Soloist TexasBluesRockShuffleBrent
RT1583 Bass, Electric, TexasBluesRockShuffle
RealDrums-TexasRnBShuffle

Lyrics:

I first saw her working at the dollar store
I was down to my last dime
What I wouldn't give for 90 pennies more
And 24 hours of her time.

Headed on over to the bottled-up spices rack
Took ten jars to her checkout aisle
You know I had to put all that cinnamon back
But I took home a mindshot of her smile

I’d like to be her fella
There are so many things I’ve got to tell her
I’m a 200 hundred pound bean vanilla
She’s one part ginger
And two parts sarsaparilla

My cross-burning mama saw me walking her home
Ma laid on the brimstone and fire
She said it’s time for me to move out on my own
So I called up my little brown-eyed desire

I’d like to be her fella
There are so many things I’ve got to tell her
I’m a 200 hundred pound bean vanilla
She’s one part ginger
And two parts sarsaparilla

Her shotgun daddy works at the cider mill
He sure don’t like my kind
When she told me I could what I will
I was running from a salt blast to my behind

I want to be her fella
There are so many things I’ve got to tell her
I’m a 200 hundred pound bean vanilla
She’s one part ginger
And two parts sarsaparilla

She said I could be her fella...

OK. That's a "REALLY INTERESTING" Lyric smile smile smile

Enjoyed. Also just know that if 3 CHORDS get across the message and energy of the song that's good enough. It's not the number of chords that make the song. It's the song in it's entirety. Sounds like you had fun making this one and great energy !! Henry

Good song with fun, clever lyrics. Enjoyed it. The prosody seemed a bit askew in a couple places, not a real big deal. Still a good one!

Hi Scott,

generally spoken, there are not many styles of music than can compete with some rocking Texas Blues shuffle - that would already do for me to like a song. But this one is so funny and so full of strange turns of the lyrics... marvellous, just my kind of stuff... !

I just had a look at RhymingZobe, because I was curious, if they deliver 'Sarsaparilla' as a rhyme with vanilla - yes, they do. And if you ever consider to make that song longer (which I would enjoy!) they deliver material for at least 20 more chorusses (even if you skip mamilla).

My modest suggestion:
'I'm the only guy they know in Mania
who can live on jelly beans and cascarilla.'

That was a most enjoyable listen, Scott !!!

All the best,

Stefan

3 chords is a good start, then ultimately the goal. Great band choice, Ezekiel, and you vocal is best. Man, if I could sing like that, I wouldn't need such a long FX chain. Ghosts That Never Lived is still a favorite, so thanks for adding to that list.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Really nice work on this! The kind of song I'd imagine sounds unreal live. Your vocals do serious justice to this as well. It flows effortlessly and the groove is awesome too. Thanks for sharing!

I never thought it was possible to make a song out of a food recipe.
You did that in an amusing way.
Just one thing bugs me, there seemed to be a note missing at the end of the lead guitar introduction.
Am I right?

Vic

Thanks, Tunemonger. I was being footloose and fancy free with the lyrics.

Hi Scott
Someone once said the necessary ingredients for country and western music are three chords and the truth. Three chords and a little imagination also works a treat. Fun lyrics and your usual excellent vocal.

Leon

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
