I have a problem with BIAB randomly unable to generate one or more real tracks in a song.
The tracks are there, in my D drive where all my real tracks and drums are, and I can get the song to generate all tracks if I exit BIAB and restart.
Just another annoying bug I suppose, but as always I would be interested in suggestions for a remedy. This started on build 814 and continued with 822. I have the Ultrapak with all real tracks.
Are the Realtracks that don't generate on: (1) the Melody track; (2) the Soloist track; (3) a Utility track? These tracks don't automatically regenerate.
The image below shows BIAB's original/static track names. Tracks #6, #7 and #10 are the tracks I'm meaning.
Even though #6/#7 change names depending on what instrument is on them, in BIAB nomenclature, they are the Melody and Soloist tracks.
Styles are installed and are often working fine, but sometimes, an Error 256 comes up, regardless of whether I sub a real track or not.
I have discovered that I can usually regenerate a single track by right clicking on the track itself > track actions > regenerate. Same for utility tracks.
But this trick doesn't work for drum tracks. When the drums remain silent after happily counting the band in, I need to close BIAB and restart it again, which seems to fix it.
This error is a bit of a nuisance, and it also happens when picking styles and choosing to play back the first 4 bars of the arrangement. Quite often, tracks will remain silent, or a style may be reduced to a lonely shaker.
I also use the sour note fix quite often, which I am very grateful for. But maybe it's got something to do with that? During a support chat, it was suggested that perhaps some of my style set files might be corrupt and that the error would appear if the generation was calling for a particular pattern variation... ?
I guess I should be pleased that you have experienced the same problem, as this shows that I am not alone in this.
I tried, after consulting with PG live help, reinstalling BIAB and the real tracks which came with the 2021 Ultrpak upgrade. This didn't work as the error is still there.
This happens with both 32 and 64 bit versions of BIAB.
The error is getting clever because it will pop up even without sour note fix, or a change of real track. I agree that this is a bit of a nuisance.
Perhaps PG Music can have a look at this for the next update.
I am a bit confused. Are you getting an Error Message when the track does not play or is the problem that the track is just silent? If an error message, what exactly does it say? Can you send us a file where the problem occurs?
I gave this a try - BIAB 2021, 822, all working fine (well, apart from some of what's being discussed on here).
This is what I did: - created a track in Cmaj, 4 bars, C only, 3 choruses - selected a style with 5 instruments _CTRTSEC - generated, played - all ok - selected Piano track, changed RT to Best Sub (1855, also 2428) - regenerated and played ok - for the newly updated track, changed AutoFix Sour Notes to 'Song Chords' - BIAB crashed (not responding)
I tried this a number of times with the same result - BIAB will hang.
I have also tried other RT subs (best Chords,..), sometimes I was able to select 2 or 3 different RTs, generate/play ok, but eventually when disabling/enabling AutoFix Sour Notes, BIAB will hang again..
I hope that this will assist the support team. As far as I can see, BIAB has a problem.....

Followed step by step - no crash with BIAB 2021 - 823.
I did this again (822), followed my previous steps, and hey, it worked. Then I proceeded to: - change AutoFix to Chords - fine - select a new best RT - bang, BIAB stopped working (Not Responding)
My view, after playing around with this for a while now - BIAB has a problem at certain combinations of Autofix and selecting new RTs. It might take 3 or three RTs before it hangs, it may take changing Autofix from Song to Chords...
It's perhaps not something that users will generally do a lot, but as far as I can see, BIAB in 822 will crash (Not Responding) pretty soon after performing the 2 actions above.....
Yes I think it is a bug. It doesn't make sense that the error code 256 says to check real tracks are correctly installed, then the non playing track will play if I close and reopen the file. So a little message to whoever programs the error messages, the flamin' tracks are there and have been all the time, so stop trying to tell me that I have made an error in installing the real tracks!
I hope this can be fixed because I like to use the sour note fix whenever I change or add tracks to a style. For example, some of the soloist tracks are too manic to be of any use, so I like to change them to something more in keeping with the rhythm of the style.
I use an iMac for most computer work. I purposefully bought a Windows PC to use BIAB and that is basically all the software I use. Is it typical for Windows software to be like BIAB, which seems to require continuous updates to fix problems?

823? Still in BETA?

Quick follow up - I had to do a RTFS to test out the audio recording feature, so I thought i might re-test the previous issue with clean factory settings:
This is what I did: - created a track in Cmaj, 4 bars, C only, 3 choruses - selected a style with 5 instruments _BIGTIME - generated, played - all ok - selected saxophone track, changed RT to Best Sub (3448 Flugelhorn, very nice) - regenerated and played ok - for the newly updated track, changed AutoFix Sour Notes to 'Song Chords' - BIAB crashed (not responding)

I noted that the track not responding each time has been the Drums....

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Update your Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows for free with build 1111!
With this update, there's more control when saving images from the Print Preview window, we've added defaults to the MultiPicker for sorting and font size, updated printing options, updated RealTracks and other content, and addressed user-reported issues with the StylePicker, MIDI Soloists, key signature changes, and more!
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
