Hi Folks, I'm starting this thread in the hopes that we can have a focused discussion regarding members' specific experiences with Big Sur. Suffice it to say upfront that Big Sur and BiaB are working fine for us.

There are many different approaches to the use of BiaB so hopefully we can share information on them and Big Sur in a manner that might prove useful to both older and newer members.

Our use of BiaB is built around RTs, RDs, MSTs and styles. When we are working on a production a big factor for us is the time that it take BiaB to regenerate and play and especially the time to render to audio files for use in a DAW. We do a LOT of cutting and pasting of RD and RT tracks so quick regens and renders are important to us. Our experience with Big Sur over the last week has given us some insight into this.

So far Big Sur / Build 422 is faster than Catalina for the below functions. I plan to gather some additional data regarding the use of styles.

Source: SGU file containing four RT's and a RD 2:49 minutes long.
Pan: 0 / Reverb: 0 / Tone: 0 / Volume: max

BiaB/Catalina 2020..........render to audio 22.83s regen and play 5.88s
BiaB/Big Sur 2020 422.....render to audio 16.63s regen and play 4.42s

Granted this is a very small part of the way BiaB can be implemented in one's work flow but we thought the performance increase might be of interest.

Bud,
Glad to hear that biab is working well for you on BigSur. As mentioned elsewhere, biab 2020 builds 422 and higher support BigSur and the new M1 Macs, and biab 2020 runs on all OS from Snow leopard to BigSur inclusive.

Have Fun!

Bud - on my late 2015 iMac 21.5 (2.8ghz i5, 8gb ram, 750gb hdd, Iris Pro 6200) RT generation takes exactly the same time on Big Sur as it does on Mojave (I don't have Catalina to test right now). Test song was the _BLUETAM demo song which has 5 RT's and is 12 bars and 5 choruses. RT generation took 14.394 seconds on Big Sur and 14.892 seconds on Mojave, which is only a 3% difference.

Some users like you have reported that RT generation is faster in Big Sur, and we have tested some faster RT generation on the M1 chip. It'll vary a bit depending on hardware though, as in my case Mojave and Big Sur were basically the same.

Zero problems after working through a new project over the last several days. Since updates have been issued subsequent to 422 I’ll mark this resolved. Have fun and be safe!

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
