I am still trying to understand why tracks created with midi, with all the output levels set to 127 play back SO MUCH QUIETER than RB generated audio tracks. People have been telling me over and over that the midi control panel has a trim pot on it. I am aware. When you turn that anything past straight up 12 it overdrives terribly. So I have to convert that track to audio, boost it 18db, and then I can mix it. That is, how do you say, crazy!! Once you convert that MIDI data track to audio, the fact that the audio generated by the conversion is so quiet makes me wonder who's hands this particular blood is on. The software or something the stupid user (me) has set up wrong? WHY are those MIDI tracks so quiet?

Remember, the trim knob is not the answer. I don't need overdriven distortion. And since this is MIDI, I am just recording data, and data has no volume. SO I don't know what to do to make the MIDI playback be at useable levels.

I am using the new 1040XTRAEZ form this year. It has just 2 lines.

I had this problem for a long time too...constantly tweaking everything to get the volume up.

Then I discovered something, you have to set the master volume in RB at 100%. At least for me, what I've come to understand is that if you have the master volume in RB set at a comfortable level...say 50% and then you adjust each track at say 50% (midi 64 on volume), the actual output from that track is 50% of 50%...even if running your midi gear output at 100%.

I know this sounds a bit weird, it certainly did for me, but play around a little with it and you'll see it makes some sense.

Unfortunately, I discovered this late and now have over 500 midi songs that I need to change.

Give it a try and see if this helps.

Jeff

I had no idea. So I need to set the master at 100%, then adjust the tracks so the 100% master doesn't make me deaf. That is great info. Thanks.

ALWAYS do this in RB/PT (or any DAW really), and set the mixer slider that resides between the Mixer and the AUX/Subgroup section in RB/PT to 100% too.

Then you get a much truer representation of your actual output; even when rendering. Your rendered files in RB/PT will be louder too. Plus your noise floor gets lower in theory.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.

Bob, set the Master Volume in the lower right hand corner of RB to 100%. Control the volume of each track with the volume sliders on those tracks.

Rharv takes this one step even further, but he's much deeper into this than me. I believe his comment regards the "ALL" volume setting on the Mixer window but as far as I know this is the same as moving the lower right hand Master Volume setting to 100%. But, I could be wrong about that, as I don't use "send" functions like he does.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
