BIAB 2020 for Mac crashed four times yesterday in the middle of songs. The error message was that it "quit unexpectedly".

I'm running MacOS Big Sur v 11.2.3
MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
Processor 2.9 GHz dual-core Intel core i5
MEMORY 8GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3
Graphics Intel Iris graphics 550 1536 MB

BIAB was output to a focusrite 2i2 and then to a Yamaha YC 88.

I was working on editing songs, the most frequent activity was erasing instrument tracks I didn't want from them. I wonder if that was the cause. Perhaps I should just save the volume of the tracks I don't want at zero. I'm trying to set up the songs to be ready to play upon loading, rather than having to mute instruments every time.
PS (edit) The crashes happened as I was playing, rather than editing.

What Bud said - there is a patch update required for BIAB to function properly on Big Sur. Please download and install it from here: https://www.pgmusic.com/support_macintoshupdates.htm#2020_423

I am already running 423. It crashed again twice today, again in the middle of songs I was editing yesterday.

Perhaps this has to do with the edits. Maybe when tracks in the song are disabled or the audio killed it somehow makes the program unstable. OTOH I'm also getting messages like "application not found" when I try to run some of the styles I have so maybe the program is corrupted. I shouldn't have styles in my library that the program can't manage.

Hello,
I had the same problem with some files after the 423 upgrade. It was always files with some repeats. When I delete the repeats, no crash anymore and everything is ok now.

I was able to work all afternoon today with no crashes. I built two songs from scratch, and included repeats that allowed the program to add lines automatically. It worked ok. I didn't touch the instrument tracks however and didn't attempt to open the files I was working on when the program crashed before.

I also reset all options to the factory defaults.

I'll stay away from editing the individual tracks. That won't be a problem for me but I think it needs to be flagged by IT as a possible bug in 423.

Hi Voltrane. Thanks for chipping in. I wondered about repeats too, but I was able to build songs with repeats today and no crashes. I stayed away from editing the instrument tracks however!

Technology is wonderful - when it works!! :-)

Yes, I forgot to tell that the « new repeats » made after the 423 upgrade were ok. Only the repeats made before the upgrade crashed!

Follow up in case anyone is following the thread.

I've been working with BIAB almost daily since I started the thread. I've had no crashes at all since I posted the last one on March 26. Solved, I hope, although I never determined the cause.

Great to read that that both of you, Genghis_McCann and Voltrane, are no longer experiencing crashes. Thanks to both of you for reporting your updates although it's too bad there is no obvious solution.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
