Does anybody have one of these things and what does it actually do? I see it referred to often as a "clip launcher", which begs the question, does it interface somehow with Real Band? I mean, if I am playing something in Real Band, the clip I would need to launch would just be on its own track so it plays when it's supposed to.

The online references to this thing all say it's made to be paired with Ableton, which makes sense since that is a Novation product...

I just have no idea about what it actually does and most music store employees are totally clueless outside of what we can ALL read on the internet. I'd like to find someone that actually owns one.

I am using the new 1040XTRAEZ form this year. It has just 2 lines.

Hi Eddie
Launching clips is more the sort of thing you do with programs like Ableton live.

This is a different kind of daw that allows you to launch clips live while recording or playing.
Useful to DJs playing or making up tracks.
It’s a whole new way of working and I found it needed some getting your head round.
I got a lite version Ableton 8 lite free when I bought my Novation Impulse 61 controller keyboard that allows you to enter loops from the 8 Drum pads.

Thanks Mike. I don't see a lot of use for what I do so I'm going to let it go. The only way to know something is to as someone who knows what I don't know! LOL!!

If you want a great example of what a Launchpad can do, watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=itRWssMSuvw

Probably not your style of music, and I'll assume that a Launchpad probably won't fit your style of music either (and it won't work as intended in Realband, only in something like Ableton as Mile mentioned), but ymmv. Personally I think the song above is great, but I'm one of those weirdos that listens to everything from pop to death metal to techno to jazz to classical.

You are correct. I have no use for this.

Those suckers CAN be programmed, however, to automate lots of things in your studio. Not just for clip based music and composition.

BTW, some people can actually program and play these things. Here's Jordan Rudess (who seems to be able to play anything with buttons)

https://youtu.be/6XF41rVzKbs

Anyone who doubt's Mr. Rudess's actual musical skills need only to see his charts he uses for when he is playing with Dream Theatre.

That clip is actually the Ableton Push, and comparison videos I quickly researched say they are somewhat similar but yet not.

True! Although, just about any MIDI device can be programmed to automate things in your studio, from lights to coffee maker to feeding your cat (ok, maybe not that one). As long as you have some software running waiting for MIDI commands, you can do that. (Note; I have not tried automating my coffee maker with MIDI, do so at your own risk)

As both a keyboardist and Dream Theater fan, the above image looks correct.

Ah yes, I missed that. They are close enough for comparison in this case - the Push being a bit more programmable in hardware, and also supporting velocity sensitivity (the Launchpad, or at least the original versions, didn't do velocity). I'm out of the loop on that kind of device these days, so I'm still going on what I remember from working at the local music shop up to 2014.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
