Windows 10 - Biab 2021 Pro (827)

My son is remote, a few States away. I had this idea to trade a Biab song back and forth and let each of us add a little something to it.
He set up some chords, dropped in an audio track and sent it to me. Sounds great, real styles, audio, everything.

Over his work, I then recorded lead guitar onto Utility Track#1. Nothin'. No matter what I do, I cannot get that audio to sound off. It's recorded, just not going through the same processing. I see the VU's in the mixer and I see the wav in the wav editor screen. (Both of them --audio and utility)

I've tried the other drivers I have: ASIO4AALL, MME, and WAS. I was able to get the Utility track to play through my computer monitor speakers using WAS (I think) and can probably duplicate that but that doesn't really help me. Only the .wav file played.

I use a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and I usually use the Focusrite ASIO driver. Front In is my guitar, back is Out to a powered speaker. USB to my laptop (newer). I haven't needed to mess around with the ASIO settings in the past and have them at their defaults (I just increase buffers to prevent it from hanging up when saving a Take).

My computer is also putting out through the Focusrite driver. I've scoured the user guides, youtube and googled.

Anyone have any ideas?

thanks

Use RealBand. If you and your son have the windows version of BIAB you both have RB. Can't suggest a solution to your BIAB problem but RB is simple and straightforward and lots of things that are difficult in BIAB are easy in RB.

Make sure the volume is set in the mixer for the utility track

You might benefit using a DAW (Logic Pro X, Garageband, Pro Tools or similar) or use Splice, Mixed In Key Satellite or tools that compare

MacMini M1 - BIAB2021 - Logic Pro X - iZotope Music Production Suite - Scaler 2 - far too many Waves plugins and Line 6 Guitars and boards + a fantastic Yamaha THR10ll mini Amp - Avid MBOX Studio

thanks guys, I appreciate your thoughts. I didn't think about real band at all. And were it just me, Reaper fills that void along with the Biab VST.
But I gotta bring my son along too, and that's a bit of a challenge --and he on a Mac, of course. I;m ot even sure if Mac 2020 (the latest) can record to Utility tracks.
Anyway, we'll try RB. thanks again!

If he has a Mac, RB will not be available.

Mac 2020 does not have any utility tracks, just one single Audio track, which of course you can record directly onto. Utility tracks were added in the 2021 version for Windows, and will likely be added to 2021 for Mac.

As for your issue with recording/playing back, try using the Focusrite driver, then under Options > Preferences > Audio > Audio Drivers > ASIO Driver's Control Panel, increase the buffer size incrementally and see if that helps.

Hi! Speaking as a totally baffled newbie, I've noticed that nobody mentioned something that completely tripped me up. After you use a Utility Track in Band in a Box (at least, if you've imported a MIDI; I haven't tried importing audio yet), you have to re-enable the style. Sometimes I get a pop up that says "Okay to enable style?" but usually I don't, and I'm still baffled enough to not know what the difference is. Sometimes it works to just click on the style in the toolbar and that enables it.

Henry Clarke has an easy to understand tutorial that addresses this. It probably covers topics you don't need, but it sure sheds a lot of light on the topic for me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jOHosQ2PYiY&t=3s The tutorial starts at 3:17.

Best to you!
Cathie, still baffled by almost everything

Hi Cathie, what build version of BIAB are you using?

In Band-in-a-Box, go to the Help menu, and click About Band-in-a-Box. Near the top of that window, it will have Version 20xx and a number in brackets - what is that number?

Thank you for telling me how to find it, Simon. It says 814. I know there's a later build but I'm uncertain how to download it since I'm using BiaB from the hard drive and not from my computer.

The latest update can be downloaded here: https://www.pgmusic.com/support_windowsupdates.htm

Once you download the installer, run it and when you're given the option install the update to your external drive - could be d:\bb, e:\bb, depends what drive letter your drive is using. The DAW plugin needs to go to the C: drive, so leave that part as is.

We've got a video on the process here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02G9LkCQnZ4

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
