In conversation in another thread, Eddie mention the fact of how enamored he was with the first little transistor radio.

Well...I have one I would like to send him as a gift. There are a few problems.

I can not read Chinese.

I know absolution nothing about radio circuits. I do have a schematic. The PCB has some information printed on it.

Eddie, I could send you the kit to build...lol

WE could send the kit to Video Track and twist his arm to solder it together...lol If we do that he would also be required to post a recording here on the forum of the radio playing a Melbourne Australia radio station...lol

I could try to put it together which I think the results is dubious at best...lol

Worst case scenario I could send you a screwed up non functional disaster of a DIY radio project which you could forever remind me of how little I know about electronics...lol...lol

Well...what do you have to say Eddie?

Billy

You're making it far too easy. I built my first one with a crystal.

The old crystal radio kits had about four parts. No instructions I can remember. And if there had been any, it would not have been Chinese. Not even Japanese at that point.

After further investigation and using what is left of my damaged brain...I came to the decision that I actually could put this mess together...lol

I will need a small bit of help with few things I do not understand but surely Steve who made the mistake of admitting he had been to electronics school will help...lol

I still think the finished product should be shipped to Melbourne for final quality control certification and of course a recording of a Melbourne radio station would be required...lol

This would be music collaboration in the true sense of the word...lol

I told you guys to never let a old guy have a computer and the URL to the forum...lol

As I remember those crystal sets were made here in the USA. That pre dated the deluge of junk coming from Japan.

I put one together as a kid but was not smart enough to understand how the "cat whisker" worked. The big kid down the street had to show me how it worked.

I was not too dumb...I could shoe a horse...lol

Matt, was it one of the kits by Heath? I built one of those too and it was rather easy, though my soldering was horrible so until my father cleaned up the soldering it didn't work well.

There was some kit at Radio Shack that built a raw synthesizer and it used spring connectors. It cost like 10 bucks or something and it was as simple as "Run this red wire from this spring to this spring" and so on. It worked, and then just to be a clown, I made some mods.

It came in a little wooden case. It had little metal tabs with plastic ends that made sound when you touched it to the contact on the motherboard, much like what a toy morse code transmitter pad would have. It tuned with one little pot that sat at the left side. I used a very small cotter pin running though it to be an easily accessible "pitch wheel". The output went to a little 2 inch speaker, but I added a 1/4" out so I could switch it to run it to an amp. Now here was the fun one. It ran on 2 AAA batteries. I looked at where the power connected and put in a switch so I could go from AAAs to an external power source and that allowed me to run on a 12v transformer. Well, when I kicked in the 12v, what was a monophonic little "beep and boop" thing turned into a polyphonic WAY overdriven mess. It wasn't true polyphony in the sense that I could play more than one note at a time, but the overapplied current made each note be several sounds. However, the tuning and output was consistent. I actually wrote a short piece of music and took that toy on stage and in the middle of that hard edged song I had a 16 bar space to make noise with that little toy synth. During the song I would play the beeps and boops but during that solo space I kicked it into overdrive and made the ungodly noise that actually fit pretty well into the song. We only played it a few times but it was fun and we got some good crowd interaction with that toy being the featured instrument. And now thinking back the 12v also raised the pitch by about 3 semitones so I had to adjust for the solo. Wish I still had it. Maybe I can run down to the Radio Shack and... Oh wait..

AS I have looked around, I have found a lot of info on youtube.

https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=210sp+radio

Also, I am not sure when Eddies birthday is but he said "I am transitioning into my 70s real soon here and talk about huge leaps.... LOL!!"

Perhaps this toy will soften the blow...lol

Billy,

If you decide to tackle the kit, I believe +++ HERE +++ is a forum thread discussion about assembling the kit.

I'd like to find a FM transmitter and small linear amplifier so I could broadcast a pirate radio station. It would be 5-6 one hour shows of some deep dive album cuts, my own work, and local artists, interspersed with some short segments of my strongly right leaning opinions. I would schedule them to run every other hour in rotation, so as one gets old I can make another and replace the dead wood. The only thing that would bum me out is having to buy a proper antenna to send the stuff out.

When I lived in downtown Cleveland there were 3 of those pirate stations. Once was run out of a dance club and it was 24/7 of dance music that NEVER changed beat. Another was obscure music. The 3rd was in Spanish so I have no idea what they were saying. Where I live now I have a lot of empty frequencies in the 88's I can use. WKSU from Kent State is there and there are a couple of jesus people that do religion talk shows at various times, but for the most part I'd be able to find a frequency.

If anybody knows anything about this stuff, please PM me. This shouldn't be talked about in publuc.

This is FCCs latest attempt to extract money from the illegal broadcast on AM/FM.

The Federal Communications Commission has issued notices to landlords and property managers threatening fines of up to $2,000,000 for allowing so-called “pirate radio” broadcasts from their properties. The notices were issued under the Preventing Illegal Radio Abuse Through Enforcement Act (the “PIRATE Act”) which was signed into law earlier this year.

Fortunately there is a legal way, but the transmitter can only cover the area of an average size parking lot. You can use a FCC certified Part 15 FM transmitters. Part 15 certified FM transmitters can be used legally by anybody, anywhere in the U.S. without the need for a license.

Well...that would make the pirate ship SS Eddie into a life raft...lol

This is another way to go for real.

I think there is a fee of about $800 to make the first application.

Then there is the music copywrite issue to solve...more money.

Thanks Jim,
I looked at the link. Everyone has the same issue, how to solder the 9088 surface mount IC.

Someone should make PCBs with many places to solder junk ICs that a person could practice with.

This type of soldering can be done. It just takes some practice.

I am going to put the kit together. Only issue is I may have to buy two or three more kits before I get it right...lol The good news is they are only around $8 bucks.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
