On the "higher banks" patches dialog, in the top left corner, there's a "Variations of" selector, which offers subsets of the patches in the list.
How/where does one control this, please?
At present the selector and the patches bare little relationship, but I've failed to find anything, presumably related to .pat files, that guides.

If it's what I think it is, you are correct to ask what it does.
If we are talking about what you see when you right-click on a MIDI instrument in the mixer, Select MIDI Instrument Patch, Select Higher Bank Patch from PAT file
then you get a window that is named Patches on Higher Banks.
Variations should act as a filter, so you could select from All Patches, or just piano etc.
But it does not work correctly for me. Choosing any of the specific filters such as a piano brings up choices that are clearly not a piano. In addition to Full Grand, I have choices including strings, guitar and flugelhorn.
Is that what we are talking about?
All I can do is guess, based on my experience making patch maps for several Roland MIDI synths, that this might be indexing on a number that at one time followed a standard that is no longer in use. If you check Include Family, it gets far worse.
I have never seen a guide to writing patch maps. I did mine by modifying existing ones for similar equipment, and adding all the patches that are listed usually in the back of your user manual.
Are you using the Korg, or something else?

Is that what we are talking about? Yes, it is. That said, now I've learned that channel 10 patches are handled specially by the SD1000, maybe the PGM version isn't as broken as I'd thought. I rarely use the Korg, though I've considered using it as a sound module. Part of this is/was to try to get a very compact setup for use on my boat, but that isn't (yet?) working out as I'd hoped.

OK, I think I may understand the "variation of" thing.
It's showing all matches of the patch number across banks/controllers, so for example is shows variations of "Sitar" as:
104.000=Sitar
104.001=Hawaian
104.010=Tres
104.011=Brass Hits (St,M)

I'll take a look! What I don't know is whether this is vendor-dependent.

I'm making a patch map for my new SD1000 as the one on the PGM website seems to not properly match my SD1000.
I now think the PGM-suplied patch map for the SD1000 is probably fine. The reasons I thought otherwise were the combined effects of "Variations of" being nonsense (in this case at least) and that the SD1000 handles patches for drums only on MIDI channel 10. On other channels they select Bank A instruments, not drums. Maybe that's normal; It threw me.

Channel 10 for drums is the standard. Indeed. I'd just not expected the Drum patches to produce some other sound if I selected them on some other channel. Looking at the GM guidelines, I see that that shows my ignorance of GM. Bank selects are commonly ignored on channel 10. The only BIAB possible-issue, is the "Variant of", which I shall just ignore.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first?
