As a package I can not think of anything better than this. Individual instruments, yes I can think of a number of better ones. BUT until we know the price of this I might be comparing apples to oranges.

This does sound like a great product to have in your arsenal if the price is right.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.

Thanks guys appreciate the feedback. I spoke with the developer over in VI - 199Eur with 50% sale upon launch. So ~ $120.

It is a good deal at $120 USD but not so good at $240 USD. YMMV

Looks really good, but at current conversion rates it seems 199 EU would be 242 U$D....if I'm doing this right.

I still use a hardware MIDI synth but I'm always on the border for switching over.

I listened to all the demos. A few random reactions:

I LOVE the acoustic bass. By far the best thing here.
The piano is recorded nicely and the demos do not fully explore how it might sound, so it could be even better (or not). No selectable variation.
The muted trumpet is lovely, and this is the first time I've ever said that about a simulated instrument I play.
The tenor sax sounded thin to me. This is also an instrument I play a bit, and have even done transcriptions of saxophone RealTracks for BIAB.
Drums, not enough examples to really know. I do like that they use standard MIDI drum assignments at least.

Excellent value at US $120.

I didn't see, is this a series where they will add on instruments in the future?

Thanks for the notice, and please keep us informed how you like it.

thanks for the listen and comments Matt. I can't agree more regarding the muted trumpet. It caught my attention immediately.

Dan, would you (or anyone) be willing to give me the nickel tour here? For the last thirty years I have only used Roland MIDI synths. I have their best one, but I'm beginning to see it does not compare any longer to what a software synth can do.

I found Kontakt 6 for $399 here: https://www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/samplers/kontakt-6/ Is that correct for what is needed?

If so, does Kontakt 6 require any dongle or other copy protection?

Do you get any sounds with Kontakt 6 or is it just a base program requiring that you buy other sounds like the one you are going to buy?

I have seen references here to Kontakt before, and I recall they always talk about 'waiting for a sale'. Is that correct?

Thanks!

I would love to assist you to move in this direction. Hopefully others here in the forum will jump in to fill in more details as you discover this remarkable sound generator.

Let me first address the "cheapest way to buy Kontakt" which is just what I did a couple years back.

Quote:
The full version of Kontakt is a powerful sampler player and a must-have for all musicians. It will open the door to thousands of free libraries too. In a nutshell, this method is all about crossgrade pricing and good timing.

The first thing to do is head to the Native Instruments website and sign up for an account. Then download and install Native Access.

To get the Kontakt discount, you’ll need to own a library that qualifies for discount crossgrade pricing. You might already own a library that qualifies, but if not go to the Embertone website and look for the free Kontakt Player library Arcane.

Get that downloaded and installed by opening Native Access and registering the serial number that Embertone sends you.

Next, go back to the Native Instruments website, specifically the Kontakt 6 product page. Make sure you’re logged in and check the dropdown box to select CROSSGRADE and the site should now show you the discounted pricing. Now ADD TO SHOPPING CART and complete the checkout process in the normal way.

This crossgrade will already get you a reduced price but it could plummet even further if you wait for the 50% off sale that regularly happens in June and November. This site-wide sale often includes crossgrade pricing discounts so make sure you time it right for the biggest saving.

Wow, thanks.

I can wait until June.

My Sweetwater rep knows I'm considering this, too, so I should get some help there.

Great, Dan.

Security is all handled via Native Access, which is the control software. This handles all the licensing and registration and updates of Kontakt as well as any NI individual products. No dongle. Works nice and permits you to register on multiple machines.

There are several libraries which are considered Free. You do know there is a Free Version of Kontakt 6 "Player". But it is less flexible and many of the add on libraries require full version. But it is worth installing to get familiar with the interface.

Yes, wait for a sale so you can purchase Kontakt at half price, well at least in the past that was the sale price.

Kontakt does not require a dongle or any other copy protections. It is assigned to your computer via their Native Access. You can install Kontakt onto two computers. Native Access keeps track of many of your presets as well as Kontakt so if you have a major crash you can just have Native Access install everything for you. You can tell Native Access where you would like the program and presets to be installed so you are not limited to the C:/ drive, except of course for the registry stuff.

Kontakt comes with a big, 43 gig, library, however it is dated. That is not to say there isn't any good presets as there are but some are quite old. An important fact IMHO is that there are a large number of third party libraries available for Kontakt. If you want or need an instrument or synth sound it will be available someplace for Kontakt.

Kontakt is my go to sound source.

PS - you might want to DL the free Kontakt Player to see if it fits in your workflow.

FYI - I keep all of my presets on an separate internal SSD and a couple times a year I clone it so I will always have them backed up. Plus if I do have a problem I can just DL Kontakt.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.
Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
