Hi,

in the last years I ordered every update of the Audiophile Mac-version of BiaB and I will do so in 2021. I suppose that there are no individualized hard drive produced and shipped and that I just get the "normal" 2021 Audiophile version (may be with its bonus things), when it is released.

What will be with all the former bonus 0- and 49-Packs. I suppose they will not be copied to an (individualized copy of the) 2021 hard drive. If so, do I have to download these files from my account and install them on the 2021 hard drive? And will the downloads be uncompressed files?

Unfortunately I have lost the overview of which ordered extra-files/packs should be part of the actual hard drive I use and will use.

I hope I could make clear my concerns in respect of my orders and future orders. (I did not train my English nearly 30 years ago.)

Thank you in advance for your answer.

Best regards
Norbert

Hi Nomi, historically speaking the previous years 0-Paks and 49-Paks have been included with the new Audiophile and UltraPAKs. The Xtra Styles PAKs and Loops-with-Style PAKs are not included with any package, so those would likely be the only add-ons you'd have to install separately.

I for one, would welcome a direct download of the Audiophile version of 2021 whenever it's released. I have this collection of BIAB USB 3 drives from previous years. Of course, media should be available for everyone who still wants it. It's only a request and not a deal breaker, however.

I was glad to see that IK's Total Studio Max and NI's Komplete finally got away from requiring physical deliverables. I have the largest versions of both and multiple copies of corresponding old media.

I certainly do not miss the bad old days of, say, Logic 8. That media/manual package was the size of a large construction brick and weighed a little over 12 pounds/5.5 kilograms!

I would welcome that as well, however it would add costs to our file server costs for both storage and monthly transfer, not to mention that you may incur fees or internet throttling thanks to downloading over a terabyte and a half. I don't know if it's something that's being considered at all, but either way I don't think it'll happen in time for the 2021 release.

Simon, those are good cautions. Thank you for considering it, though.

If you could offer an update-only downloadable package, perhaps that would work. A downloadable version of the Plus-Pak would skip repeating well over a terabyte of files.

Yes, an Audiophile Pluspak could be an option and would help in the long run, though that's still well over 100gb to download for an update.

Well, I appreciate the concern over potential throttling but that's my problem, not PGM's and not yours. For so many of us, that's just not an issue. Besides, there's still the old way.

So? A download of the 2020 Audiophile for Mac is 17 parts totalling 143GB without the uncompressed Audio. Since my part of the Silicon Valley is copper only, no fiber-optic, that download took a little over an hour just now.

While 100GB to update my uncompressed 44.1k .aif files would certainly be nice, the fact is that so many of us have no problem downloading the full package, it would be nice to see it as an option. As I stated earlier, Komplete is not a problem for me a couple weeks ago (Ultimate Collectors Edition — 1.3TB).

Not to mention that RealTracks for Windows are distributed using EXE files, which have a hard 2gb limit. 100gb split into 2gb files would be a pain at 50+ files to install. 1.5tb split into 2gb files would be a nightmare at 750+ files. The Mac DMG files don't have such a limit, so they're easier to deal with, but bandwidth costs and supporting Windows users with 750+ files are still some of the factors we have to consider. There are additional factors past these two as well, but packing and distributing are two of the larger ones.

Good points to consider Simon, and need to be taken into account.
Presumably Windows users also make up a 'reasonable' part of PG Music's clients.

PG Music should make a "Product Manager" application. Something like Toontrack has done. Then users could just download that and manage all installation through the app, regardless of how many files need to be downloaded.

It would be so much easier for everyone.

You mean like Native Instruments, IK, UVI, iZotope and so many others (and those are the ones I use)?

What a concept.

PG Music has a +++ download manager +++ that is accessible through your online account. From the description:
Quote:
The purpose of the Download Manager is to automatically download and install all of the Band-in-a-Box content. The majority of the content is RealTracks files; these are quite large and so they aren't included in the base Band-in-a-Box program installation. The Download Manager can work in the background and you can continue to use Band-in-a-Box while it is downloading the additional content.

Yep, Windows BIAB users outnumber Mac users about 4 to 1.

Of note is the fact that the download manager currently exists for Windows only, given the large amount of EXE files necessary for a full installation - there are currently 84 files necessary for just the RealTracks in a Windows UltraPAK, where there are only 11 for Mac.

Where is the Mac version? (This is the BIAB for Mac forum).

Edit: I see that Simon already answered this. Thanks!

Simon, I did not realize that. Thanks for the information. smile

While I'm sure it is an oversight I hope the PG Music web manager updates the Download Manager website description to correct the oversight and reflect the fact the utility is a Windows only application.

Jim - the page linked above is titled "Downloading and installing Band-in-a-Box for Windows packages". There is a similar page specifically for Mac users here: https://www.pgmusic.com/tutorial_downloading-realtracks-mac.htm

I'm fairly certain that any mention of the Download Manager on our site is also accompanied by similar titles or other text indicating Windows. If you find any place where Windows isn't mentioned, or that could be clarified, please let us know.

Simon,

Thank you for pointing out the oversight on my part. Yer right, the heading is there; I just flat overlooked it. Shame on me. frown

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
