When I open a MIDI file in RealBand, I get a notification box that says:

"MIDI file contained no chord symbols.
Automatic chord detection was done.
The detected chords can be viewed in the Chords Window."

1) In BIAB (Win 2021) if I use File > Open Special > Open MIDI File
I get ONLY the MIDI file, and not the chords.

2) If I then use File > Import > Import Chords from MIDI file,
I get the chords alright, but BIAB creates a NEW file, and my MIDI data is gone.

The workaround I've found, is to do process 2) first (i.e. get the chords),
then use Melody > Edit Melody Track > Import Melody from MIDI File.

Is there a setting somewhere I can use to have BIAB auto-generate and display the chords from an imported MIDI file?

Thanks!

<< 1) In BIAB (Win 2021) if I use File > Open Special > Open MIDI File >>

BIAB (Win 2021) File > Open Special > Open MIDI File (or the shortcut key F7) loads and opens the Chord Sheet populated with the chords on my system and all of the midi channels are loaded onto and play from the Melody Channel. Using this command sequence has also always worked the same in previous versions of BIAB.

. On my system, using the Open icon from the File Menu at the top of the Main Page will also open a midi file and populate the Chord Sheet using automatic chord detection.
. Using the Open File (F3) Hot Key will also open a midi file and populate the Chord Sheet using automatic chord detection.
. Left or Right clicking on the Open icon (looks like a folder) and selecting Open entire MIDI File (mid) to Melody Track opens a midi file and populate the Chord Sheet using automatic chord detection.

In the top tool bar next to the Help Tab, Window/Midi Chord Detection/Midi Chord Detection appears to me as intended for entering chords using a midi keyboard connected to the PC so it has not effect on automatically detecting midi chords.

In short, midi automatic chord detection has always worked for me but it appears to somehow have been deselected in your BIAB program.

My suggestion is to first, attempt to open a MIDI file using the F3 command to see if that activated the midi auto chord detection feature. IF not -

The setting to reset BIAB to defaults is Options\Return to Factory Settings.

I'm almost certain that midi automatic chord detection is selected by default because I have never had to set midi chord detection on or have it disabled on my system. If that's in fact true, then resetting to factory defaults should turn midi automatic chord detection on on your system as well.

Charlie:

My F7 (and/or File > > Open Special > Open MIDI File) still brings in MIDI only,
with NO chord detection.

However, using F3 works exactly like I hoped it would, and as you described.
(using the same file)
So I'm a happy camper!

I hesitate to "Return To Factory Settings" (either choice) because I seem to
have things go awry that need fixing if I do that.

Thanks for your help!

Lloyd, I'm puzzled by that error message, because the MIDI standard does not include chord info. It couldn't be there. But I don't use RealBand so I'm not going to dispute what you say it said.

I agree. If using the F3 commands work, mission accomplished and as you say, no need to fix the additional things the reset would alter. That's why I thought to suggest you try using F3 first on the outside chance it would work. Glad it did.

Maybe a future update will reset the specialized open midi files command on your system so it will properly detect the chords. I think it should be doing that by default and I have no ideas to suggest why it doesn't. Nor can I speculate what the difference between open file F3 and Open Midi File F7 do differently.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
