Hello. I'm posting a problem I'm having with BiaB 2010.

I'm new to BiaB -- just installed and have been reading and learning for about two weeks now. Fabulous product. FYI -- My expert level: Retired IT Network Tech and Applications Developer 27 yrs.

BiaB Version: 2010 MegaPak
Build: 295

System: Gateway Quad-Core Q8300 Processor
Memory: 6GB, DDR3
Disk: 750GB (75% remaining)
Video: Intel GMA X4500 (integrated)
Operating System: MS-Windows 7 (up to date drivers and builds), 64-bit

Problem: Sometimes after exiting Opt -> Preferences -- OR -- simply exiting the program (BiaB program), I get an External Exception Error popup window (C000001D at 066D3861). When I press the only button available to me (the OK button), the system just beeps at me and it pops up again. It does this repeatedly until I force a system restart. It doesn't happen all the time (intermittently).

I received the DVD's direct from PG. The install went as expected. Immediately after installing BiaB I installed the Update Patch DVD and also the 295 build (downloaded from PG) -- in that order.

I have not contacted support yet and decided to research as much on my own first. I have read the manual cover to cover and I've searched this forum and did not find anything about my exception error problem.

I would have liked to upload the error message JPG but did not see a means of doing that here in the forum.

Thank you for your help. Please advise.

About uploading the JPG with the message, you need to find somewhere on the Internet to host your pictures. There are a number of free photo sites. Then you put a link in your post to where the image is.

I too am getting the external exception error. Just recieved my BIAB-2010 Ultrapak on external USB, and when I exit the program, I get this error.
Same OS - Windows 7 64bit - all up-to-date. I installed update 265 to the x:\bb folder on the drive (in my case, m:)

External Exception Error C000001D at: 056f3861 - over and over. I eventually can't click on the message, and have to kill bbw.exe using task manager.

Tried compatability modes, and XP SP2 mode fixes it for me, but now I have a UAC popup each time I go to launch, annoying, but will work for now...help?
Is there anything special I need to do to force this to run under 32-bit mode? All windows applications under 64bit windows <should> go under c:\Program Files(x86) to tell the OS that the application is 32bit....could that be related?

Thanks,
Jacques

I too am getting the external exception error. Recieved my BIAB-2010 Ultrapak on external USB, and when I exit the program, I get this error, and yes - it freezes up the whole system. Also downloaded and installed the latest (non-beta) version of build 295.

Mine's an older system, running 32 Bit windows XP SP3 on a 2793 mHz Pentium D processor system with 8Mb of RAM - and previous versions of BIAB run perfectly on it.

This must surely be a bug because of the spread of systems it's affecting - can anyone at PG resolve this for us?

Thanks

First of all, be sure to report this directly to PGMusic. Send an email message to support@pgmusic.com.

For Digihound:

Quote:

XP SP3 on a 2793 mHz Pentium D processor system with 8Mb of RAM

I hope you actually have more than the 8MB of RAM you reported, as that's not going to even let you run Windows. And I hope it's not a typo for 8GB, since Windows XP 32-bit can only address a little over 3GB total RAM, anyway.

For Jacques:

Quote:

Well, my copy is currently installed to C:\Apps\PGMusic\BIAB on Windows 7 64-bit (where I have installed it probably since version 8.0 running on Windows 95) and is running with none of these problems (on two different machines). I also run my RealDrums/RealTracks from the D: drive, and that works fine as well.

The only things I can think of are related to many of the other postings:

Is the drive getting enough power (are you using the cable with two USB connectors for the computer side that came with the drive)?

Is that USB port perhaps set to go to sleep after a certain amount of time?

Others have had some rights issue with external USB's; make sure you have full rights to read, write, and create in the BB folder on the drive.

Perhaps a rogue DirectX (DX) effect has been installed on your computer?

Did you happen to install the VSC DXi softsynch (affects Vista and Win7 mainly, but some have reported problems on XP - it shouldn't even install in 64-bit)?

Have you tried to reset factory defaults and reselect your audio sources and preferences?

Have you tried it without ASIO (using only MME) to troubleshoot if that's where the problem lies?

Have you tried installing it to your local hard drive to run it there (even if only temporarily - you can always delete that and revert back to the external USB later)?

Otherwise, I would again report it to PGMusic at the address above.

Thanks for the feedback, but I'm confused. The last time I reported a problem to the support address, I was told I should submit it to the forum and wait to see if anyone can reproduce it before sending it to support. Don't support look in on the forums anyway?

On the 8Mb - yes, that would be a slow system! It is 8GB, as I also use my computer for professional image editing, and Photoshop etc use the extra memory for storing large images.

I am running BIAB from my hard drive, having installed the new version from the external USB hard-drive, and it only accesses styles etc on the external hard drive. My songs are saved on my internal hard drive also, so a crash on exit would seem to be more related to the program than the external hard drive in my case.

I'm not sure what BIAB does when it closes down (perhaps it does some sort of save settings procedure?) but this seems to be what is causing the problem.

JFord - The install I chose was option 1 - run everything from the external drive. I'm currently running in MME, but tried ASIO as well, with the same issue. The only other DXi I've got associated is Forte Coyote, which seems to be working fine. Again, if I set the compatability mode to "windows xp SP2", it works but with the annoying UNC prompt.

Digihound, it's good to go to the forum to see if others have the same problem and may have found a solution, but I would think PGMusic support would still take the support request. I'm surprised they sent you only to the forum. If it truly is a problem with the application, then there's nothing we can do here to fix it.

Jacques, I don't know what to say other than the ideas I've presented, and it's hard to tell sometimes without seeing the system.

I'll continue pondering and share if I think of something.

DigiHound, You are correct in assuming that the FIRST thing one should do when they have a problem like this is to first check the forums(s) for similar situations. Often times the problem is related to the user being new to the software and to the manufacturers website environment. You did the prudent thing -- many thousands / millions of support personnel would be proud that you chose to approach it this way.

BTW, I don't have an answer / solution yet but I have notified tech support. If they want to ask me if I've researched the problem on my own prior to contacting them, I'll be able to tel them that I did this.

Russell --> Done it today.

Russell --> He / We are using 64-bit, Windows 7 and it does support the full 8GB of memory. He is telling you that he's running it in WinXP-32 bit MODE on his Win7-64 bit machine.

Russell --> Correct me if I'm wrong but it sounds like you've been running BiaB since version 8.0 and you previously ran it on Windows 95. That suggests that you were running in 32-bit mode at that time since Win-95 isn't a 64-bit operating system. You're saying that today you run it successfully on Win7 64-bit with no problems. I'm assuming that this was / is running on the same machine? So I have to ask, is this machine a Quad-Core? Is it an older machine? Not sure it makes a difference but, I'm running on a brand new Quad-Core with room to spare and all the updates to drivers and operating system. Perhaps our situations are different in that you 'upgraded' either your hardware or your software or both from Win95 to Win7 and I started with a new Win7 machine without the upgrade 'path' that you took.

Russell --> I have a single, internal 750GB drive. I bought BiaB MegaPak software and I run everything from this single C: drive. No external anything.

Russell --> Since I was concerned about compatibility before I made my purchase, I researched this issue beforehand and I found on this forum, a posted 'work-around' which Jacques Baribeault also shows above. Basically involves using the Forte Coyote product. Yes, it still does this without the Forte product.

Russell --> Factory Defaults: Yes. In fact have uninstalled and reinstalled the software three times.

Russell --> ASIO: I only use MME. I don't physically have an MIDI equipment.

No, I'm saying that BIAB has always been able to run in a different folder. There has never been a requirement to run it in the C:\Program Files folder, and I've been running BIAB from BIAB 8.0 on Win95 since 1999 through every version since (and through Windows 98) all the way through BIAB 2010 today on a triple boot system running XP Pro (32-bit), Vista Ultimate (32-bit), and Windows 7 (64 bit) on several different computers along the way. And it's always been run from the same folder (C:\Apps\PGMusic\BIAB). I only mentioned it, because Jacques thought the problem might be that it wasn't installed to C:\Program Files(x86).

But that's not the point. The point was that I was just trying to think of things to try that might be wrong. Obviously you (and a few others) are getting that error when many others aren't. I've been there. I had an error once that no one else had. In the end, it was a bug in the program that seemed to happen on my particular configuration. A patch update fixed the problem.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

re real tek.
basically mate i dont recommend useing on board sound.
consider getting sometime a proper sound device.
with w7 compatible drivers.
from various postings i see in various recording forums it seems that
some sound device vendors are busy redoing drivers for w7.
some already have w7 drivers but some dont.

mebe it is a biab bug..only pg can answer that..
but the fact other people have biab
working in w7 makes me wonder if its system //user specific.

heres what i would do.
try another sound device either internal thats known to be w7 compatible,
or an external usb sound device thats w7 compatible.
if you find the problem goes away, then this suggests a real tek issue.
(talk to anyone makeing songs useing daw pc and most people dont use the on board sound. )
if the problem doesnt go away , mebe indeed its a biab bug.

another comment.
with a quad core pc like yours most people with such dont record to
the same drive as win resides on.
(i'm sure your aware of such things as writing virtual memory to disk and head contention etc.)
thus i always recommend a second internal 7200 rpm drive wit 32 mb cache to record to mate.
thus leaving win free to do its thing on its own drive.
(7200 rpm 32 mb cache drives are a no brainer these days..70 buks.
read my tips in the tips n triks section of the forum for added daw tips
to save me retyping lots.).

Attention Win7 Users (with this problem)!

I found that the simple solution was to run the program in compatibility mode by editing the properties for the shortcut I had on my desktop. Simply set it to run under Windows XP, Service Pack 2.

I've seen other posts that suggest they've still had a problem when they tried the same thing under Vista. All I know is it works under Windows 7 and XP-SP2 (don't know what the problem with Vista might be).

Thanks for the posts kids!

Hello Russell,

Glad you found a solution. For what it's worth, I am not able to duplicate this problem on any Windows 7 64-bit machine...

If, instead of selecting a compatibility mode, you select 'Run as admin' - does that solve the problem for you also? And, did it only start happening with the most recent Band-in-a-Box build, or was it happening before also?

Andrew,

I have a brand new Gateway Quad-Core. Win/7 from factory. All windows updates. All driver updates.

I am a brand-new BiaB user. First install was 2010 with build 295 after. Began happening right from the start -- uninstall and reinstall 3X.

I am the only user and so I log onto this unit under an admin profile.

Never went away until I created a desktop icon and changed to run in compat mode.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
