To me it depends on the group and the gig.

When I was in a jazz or blues band, we had sit-ins all the time.

I have gone to jazz and/or blues jams and sat in with my friends. As long as I know the 'house band' is getting paid a fair wage, I have no problem sitting it. I bring my horn, leave it locked in the car's trunk, and only get it out if they ask me to sit in.

When I was in the house band that was fronted by a teacher in the University of Miami jazz program and also played for Ira Sullivan, some very famous jazz musicians would sit in with us.

When I was in a 'show band' and when I was in a band that opened for major stars in concert, no one asked to sit it, and they would have been refused.

In our present duo with the backing tracks that I create myself, in our key, and our arrangement, unless they ask in advance and rehearse with us, we don't accept sit-ins. Why? It would only make them look bad.

On the other hand, when we were gigging on cruise ships for a few years, some of the other musicians from the orchestra or other small bands would sit in with us, backing tracks and all.

No hard, fast rule for me. It depends.

Good points Notes. But you still knew what was OK, and what wasn't. No hard rules, but rules, nevertheless. That seems to be a good approach.

And if not for the "Rocky" types, I wouldn't not have to have a hard set rule about NO sit ins. Though even that has a soft spot. It's more "Nobody I don't know or haven't seen play can sit in." But that's in a bar environment. The thing I am doing now is a show thing, with songs arranged OUR way, and nobody walking up can know which songs end "ta da", which are "Pat Boone Debbie Boone", and which are crisp staccato. When songs fade out on recordings and you make your own endings, it's not even a remote possibility that someone who hasn't rehearsed can know how a song ends. Geeze we end one on a held chord that's the 4 chord. Who'd guess that? And a sloppy ending makes a band look worse than bad notes during the song. The audience will remember the time the hammer hit the thumb no matter how many times it missed.

You gotta lift yer thumb when you move your left hand anyway

/sorry, was literally a lyric from a song I wrote years ago about my favorite bass and how beat up it was ..
//if you didn't lift your left thumb you may get a sliver!
///but it sounded awesome; still have it, bad knobs and all

The context here is that this is a tribute band, so it's a 1 act play of a guy's career highlights. We sound GREAT and need to make an impression everywhere we go if we hope to have word of how great we sound work its way back to people who book the big festivals. And one good way to NOT accomplish that is to be inviting azzclowns on stage who can't play and don't know that the thick E string is NOT the top string because it's at the top of the guitar when you are wearing it. We'd like to eventually get as far as the Ohio State Fair some day, and you have to be outstanding to get THAT invitation. I mean, this isn't that state up north...

The state fair is your life goal??
That's a pretty low bar Eddie, considering it's in Ohio. <grin>

Aim higher

And there was a time when I reluctantly let a guitarist sit in during our break.

He was very obviously intoxicated by the time we took a break so we were not aware of his talent.

This guy could humble Chet Atkins and Tommy Emmanuel! I didn't want to follow this guy on stage.

For the most part I feel the same as Eddie. I practice a LOT before shows, and any time impromptu performers have been encouraged by the venue to join me on stage, it has been terrible. For me. But, when it happened at a class reunion, the audience seemed to like it because the intruder was a classmate who was known and liked by the audience. Apparently he had a reputation from playing in various bands in high school. His appearance on the stage seemed to complete the memory of their high school experience.

Only one time did I "embrace" it. It was a private party, they paid me well, everybody was drunk and they decided to turn my show into a karaoke party. Once it went down that path, however, I refused to pick back up with my show. We continued the drunken orgy of off key singing attempts until the allotted time for my show was finished, at which time they were so pleased with their own moment in the sun that they collected a huge tip for me. Kind of embarrassing, but it taught me that gigs aren't about me. They are about the audience. Specifically, about the person who is paying for it.

Any more, aiming higher is pretty much hoping I wake up for one more day, something worth living for when you don't have to live in that state up north... where the main college in the state has Astroturf to cut down on the cheerleaders grazing at halftime...

The State Fair in Columbus pays HUGE money, but this year it will be closed to the public and confined for livestock competitions only. They will return in 2022 with 11 days, meaning bands will have an 11 show schedule, and if you can be the headline act it will pay huge dollars. I doubt we would be in line for that since we are a tribute act that pays homage to a guy who was not that big himself outside a few select markets. I don't see it out of the realm of possibility that we could get the slot right before the main band though. We're really good.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
