Doctor Jazz Hi Folks, I've recently been reviewing songs that are about to become in the Public Domain i.e. 95 years old or older. I came across "Doctor Jazz" - one of my favourite songs written by King Oliver and Walter Melrose and first recorded by Jelly Roll Morton. He (Ferdinand Joseph LaMothe) was a an American ragtime and jazz pianist, bandleader, and composer. He claimed to have invented Jazz in 1902 which has lead to a lot of discussion since his death in 1941 at the tender age of just 51. Regardless he was a genius on the piano and also wrote some wonderful songs. My version is in a Western Swing feel which may make him roll over in his grave. However it was a genre that was in it's hey day in the 20's and 30's and I suspect Jelly Roll would have loved it. A quiz question - why did he call himself "Jelly Roll"? Vocals - Nigel Spiers All instruments including the soloists are Band In A Box Western Swing Real Tracks by PGMusic.

Hello, again, Mr. Spiers... Based on my memories of the lyrics to 'vulgar' blues songs I've listened to over the years, the term 'jelly roll' is/was slang for female genitalia. Your Western swing version of 'Doctor Jazz' is a hoot, brother! I treasure the memory of that day in my youth when I discovered Bob Wills & the Texas Playboys. Swing, is swing, period, no matter how that term is applied by musicians on a regional basis. You sang the lyrics with a jazzman's finesse, right down to the gutsy growl in your voice as you sang the words 'Doctor Jazz' in the last verse. I liked the extended intro as it is typical of songs that are written to get folks on the dance floor before they ever hear a lyric. You're quite an entertainer, Mr. Spiers !

Hi Nigel, my first thought was,'Wow, it's unbelievable what BIAB can do for you if you know how to use it. And, man, you surely do know. Most likely I'm the only one who didn't know that tune (and I'm not familiart with the whole genre, I must confess), but it got me right from the start. Nigel, I have to say it again: Love your vocals - so damn cool... Enjoyed the thing A LOT !!!! Cheers, Stefan BTW: The Urban Dictionary confirms Loren's lexical expertise

Hi Stefan,
Thanks for your comments.
Yes - I know what you mean - sometimes a song, BIAB Style and Real Tracks all come together and you think that Style was made for that song.
Best Regards Nigel

The doctor is in. Excellent choice of PD material, and a very interesting take on the classic. You're right about the rolling over the grave, but he sure would recognize the huge amount of talent poured into your version, Nigel. Excellent vocal and what a great band choice. Really enjoyed it.

Nigel I loved this one. A great toe tapper with and outstanding vocal. Super backing tracks and the mix was spot on. The intro and ending had me thinking Django on an electric guitar!
This is top shelf all the way!
Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up. Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

Nigel,
Nice use of the BIAB Western Swing tracks. Good mix. Vocal is well sung, nicely recorded and processed.

Hi Nigel,
Although it's not exactly my kin of music, I did enjoy how you perfomed with the band and especially your vocals. They are very, very good in this genre. Probably in other genres as well, but here they fit like a glove! And that I enjoyed the most, how you managed to make you become a real 'doctor Jazz'!
There is that other thing you came up with: the quiz about mr. Roll. I leave those women thinks Bluage game with for they are. So for me he was performing a song in the ragtime period. That was some kind of pre rock and roll. So he was his way ahead. I think...
But as I mentioned earlier, I loved the vocals in this very good performed song, oh and the band of course!
Hans

Nigel, I think Ferdinand drumming solo with bones on plank of the casket. Very cool interpretation and vocals! Ace arrangement and mix. Thank you for sharing.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
