I have several expensive devices that will not run on win 10...no drivers.

Any reason I can not use win 7?

Nope. Was Windows 7 the OS of the time?

I am using the new 1040XTRAEZ form this year. It has just 2 lines.

I've ran W7 in a pinch as recently as about 2 weeks ago, but it is no longer supported for updates/security so it's a personal choice depending on what you risk by doing so ..

if the computer is not on the internet, what are the risk?

I assume you can still download the last update that was available for win 7.

I have WinXP running on one stage computer and Win7 on another. Since they never go on the Internet, since the only files I transfer to them are either MP3 or RTF files, and since the software I use them fore still works fine, there is no need to get any updates.

Actually, I'm surprised my 2002 ThinkPad is still humming away. I dropped the other 2002 ThinkPad, broke a hinge, and although it still works, I retired it and replaced it with a Win7 ThinkPad.

On stage, they play backing tracks and display either words or music notation. I bring two and have both up and running for that the-show-must-go-on moments. I gig for a living, so failure is not an option. Since 2002 I've had to switch the USB→Audio cable to the second computer twice. Not a bad record for ThinkPad computers.

At home, I have an old XP just to run Master Tracks Pro. It works better on XP than it does on Win10. I like it for MIDI sequencing because it is very, very fast and without DAW audio features, everything I need is no more than two clicks away.

There is nothing wrong with old computers as long as you don't put them on any network (including Internet) and are careful the files you feed them are virus free.

I may be the oldest old phart here but I'm absolutely down with the latest tech since so much of what I do musically and otherwise is net based - unlike some of you folks. I'm a Mac guy but I did fire up my 12 year old Win 7 Dell the other day (first time in years) to search for some photos. All worked fine but, man, were the photo editing programs ever clunky smile

Those 2 things contradict each other. If it's not on the interne, how would you download updates?

I once heard a tech support agent tell someone who needed drivers for their NIC to download them. Okay, think about that for a sec....

Just to be technical, and you know I always am, you could put them on your LAN at home but never on a WAN where they are exposed. Just to avoid using "sneakernet" when you have to move files to put them in your show. Have a separate router for just those 2 independent of the one you use to get online.

In old days you could turn NETBios on and TCP/IP off for file sharing, and I did that for a long time. It did take some tweaking I don't remember how to do, but it worked to keep computers from being exposed. Same deal though, ONE had to have TCP/IP enabled to get out into the world. Man, that's really dating myself. I don't know when they renamed NETBios from NBF to NBT but that was well after I stopped doing that anyway.

Howdy Plano....

Personally, I don't see a problem.

My DAW (Sonar X3) is still Win7 because I have a dated audio interface being the Delta 44.
I have couple of other older apps that may not work in Win10.

Yes....I also use it on the web because I purchased a hearty anti-virus program package with a VPN.
Hence....I don't worry about it either way.
I still have Win7 on my laptop but with the same anti-virus program and VPN.

Hope that helps.
Have a great day....

Easy to have a dual boot system windows 10 and 7 on same computer different partitions of course, I have it for years, runs fine, though don't use windows 7 much now.

You can set to have a default boot OS either 10 or 7.

An invaluable tool I use in case of MBR corruption or point towards a partition with an OS is EasyBCD

https://neosmart.net/EasyBCD/

There is a free version there, no need to buy.

There's an easier way - set your IP address manually and do not specify a gateway or DNS server IP address. This allows the computer to use TCP/IP for local network communication, and not access the internet.

I've worked in the tech biz long enough to remember when those jokes were fresh and new!

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
