Here goes nothin'(as they say).

Since you guys are such tough critics, I thought I would release this quiz here before releasing it on social media.

Any feedback/criticism is appreciated. smile

I got as far as Keith Urban, which I guessed, hit the next, had no idea, and figured the quiz wasn't made for me. I know what people sound like, but don't often know what they look like.

I didn't care for the "Tone" question. To me, tone has two meanings, either (1) the quality of the sound or (2) sometimes used as the note itself.

I didn't like your choice on how full the sound is, because you can have a thin tone.

I didn't like steady periodic sound because short notes can have tone too.

The relationship of the note and a key can establish tone in another broad way, as in the piece had a somber tone.

Perhaps there are too many definitions of tone, or perhaps I'm just being too picky.

I don't mean to be hyper-critical, but you asked for my opinion. I hope my input helps.

Hi Joanne,

That was fun. I have a couple of suggestions.

One, knowing artists really has nothing to do with the rest of the test. Its like music theory vs musicians.

Two, to a keyboardist a portamento can also be a glissando. I know they are not identical but both could be the answer to the question, much like for a string instrument player a slide or a bend. YMMV

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.
Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

Fun again.

Not my genre but not terrible.

No feedback on wrong answers (but ok since this is a running contest).

Again, I have some quibbles with a few questions.

Check spelling of fundamentals (unless there is a legit South African variant).

I went through the test and likely failed miserably. My nit-pik is to question 6 and would be to use different terminology than 'layer' for overdubbing. While that's technically correct and common jargon to the industry, I feel 'adding another recording' is more accurate and likely clearer to folks not completely familiar with DAWs or multi track recording.

It was a fun test.

2 or 3 of the questions were about identifying people. That is not knowing about music. That is knowing people in pop culture. Knowing what pianissimo or fermata means is knowing about music.

I smashed the hell out of my car today. When the cops came I told him "Officer, that guy was BOTH texting and drinking a beer." The cop said "Sir, he has every right to do that. I mean, it's HIS living room..."

Now let’s quiet down and hold up there, pardner.

I got 9 out of 10 correct. I know what Keith Urban looks like but not the other guy. All the other questions were pretty normal.

What does ability to identify someone's photo have to do with music? Can you identify this flower?

Not trying to give you a hard time but there are thousands of famous musicians and identifying there photo has little to do with " how well do you know music"

Cheers,

Billy

I didn't take the quiz, but had an observation.
You asked this question in a forum of musicians.
It may fare better on 'social media' which was your original intent.
Just sayin', a couple of the responses here may not be indicative of a social media response.

It may be wildly successful in a different setting.
When I read that some questions were about identifying various musicians I passed.
Could you point out 'Sir Duke'in a lineup?
/again; a musician forum

Insert any of thousands of other influential musicians as needed in place of Duke
Seems more suited for social media, which was your intent
Just my observation
It may do much better there than here, depending on the targeted audience wink

Thanks guys. I am trying out these quizzes to see if I can get anything to go viral on social… but I am learning that it is not so easy to achieve this… there has to be some motivation for people to share the quiz and that is not so easy.

7/10 not bad for me. I guess I’m kinda of a ritardendo!

Joanne I liked it it was fun. I don’t see the problem with tossing in a couple of artist identification since while not actually music terms it shows whether someone is engaged in music.

The winner was PlanoBilly with his 9 correct answers!

Billy, let me know if I can send the $25 via Paypal to the email address you sent in the quiz or if there is another email address you want me to use.

Bwt if anybody wants to know what the correct answers were, just go through the quiz again. https://www.opinionstage.com/joanne-cooper/how-well-do-you-know-music-

I did alright for most of the questions, but apparently my musical tastes don't extend to either Keith Urban or Marshall Mathers. Now if it was Brent Hinds or Paul Waggoner I might've tied Billy :P

I understand that. IF he doesn't follow country and read whatever the country version of Tiger Beat is (Pickup Truck Gazette?) he has no way to know what country stars look like. And that has nothing to do with knowing music anyway. That's pop culture more than music.

I can not name one of Keith Urban's songs. New Zealand music is a bit far away for me. Nicole Kidman is a pretty famous person.

Keith and his wife have been on US TV so often his picture was easy having nothing to do with what sort of music he plays.

The idea of this quiz being music trivia is much more logical. Some people could be uncomfortable taking a "music test".

For all the other questions it was obvious to me what the correct answer would be even if I did not agree with the exact wording.

Of course I have been a life long subscriber to Pickup Truck Gazette....lol

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
