Ain't Nobody's Business

Our version of this Public Domain blues song.

From Wikipedia:

Ain't Nobody's Business"(originally "Tain't Nobody's Biz-ness if I Do") is a 1920s blues song that became one of the first blues standards. It was published in 1922 by Porter Grainger and Everett Robbins. The song features a lyrical theme of freedom of choice (and Bud re-wrote the lyrics for the last 2 stanzas) and a vaudeville jazz–style musical arrangement. It was first recorded, as "'Tain't Nobody's Biz-ness if I Do", in 1922 by Anna Meyers, backed by the Original Memphis Five.

The song has been covered by numerous artists.

Janice Merritt - Arrangement, Lead & Harmony vocals.
Me - Arrangement & Guitar.
Bud recorded Janice and provided mixing and mastering assistance.

The Band:
RealTracks in style: ~~481:Bass, Acoustic, Jazz Ballad Sw 085
MIDI SuperTracks in song: 1889:Piano, Solo-Accompaniment CountrySwingJohn Sw 085
RealTracks in song: ~~425:Organ, B3, Background Blues Sw 120
RealDrums [in Song:PopRockShuffle: a: Snare, Closed Hatb: Snare, Open Hat

Ain’t Nobody’s Business

There ain't nothin' I can do or nothin' I can say
That folks don't criticize me but I'm going to do
Just as I want to anyway
And don't care just what people say

If I should take a notion to jump into the ocean
Ain't nobody's business if I do
If I go to church on Sunday, then cabaret all day Monday
Ain't nobody's business if I do

If my man ain't got no money and I say, "Take all of mine, honey"
Ain't nobody's business if I do
If I give him my last nickel and it leaves me in a pickle
Ain't nobody's business if I do

I’d rather leave my friends than listen to them no end
Ain’t nobody’s business if I do
I’m gonna live my own life, ain’t putting up with no strife
Ain’t nobody’s business if I do

Ain’t nobody's business if I do

Brilliant, don't know if that's what you call a faux ending, but it sure worked to great effect on me. Fantastic vocals, searing guitar, and so well put together!

Hi Guys,

Interesting arrangement of this classic and you have sure put a lot of work into it.

I was on the point of posting my version of this song but it was not quite coming together.

One of my all time favourite songs - Well done all of you.

Best Regards

"Ain't nobody's business if I do, if I do."
The repeat of "if I do" had a really cool Harry Nilsson vibe to it.

This is a wonderful rendition.
The expectation that was built in me during the piano/vocal only section, in anticipation of the band and particularly the guitar was very interesting. Brain battling the options, likelihoods and enjoys what already was.

Well, the anticipation/expectations was met by a great band section and cool soloing...lovely tone on guitar and vocals.
A thoroughly fab collab.

Hi guys,

Cool arrangement, Peter, holding off on bringing in the band until the outro.

Janice sounds great as per usual, as do you.

Nice take on an old classic, enjoyed!

Peter, Janice & Bud,

This is one of the coolest arrangements of this song that I have heard to date.

Stellar vocal and mix - outstanding instrumentation and love the way the band kicks in for the last minute or so.

Keep these old PDs coming...

Wow, what a great arrangement!! This again is the best version of an old classic that I've ever heard. Janice, your vocals always bring out the best feel for the song. That piano is outstanding. It brings us back to sitting in a smoky bar with just the strong singing voice and that piano man with a perpetual cup o' grog on the keys. Then the scene changes to the present with the same strong voice and that piano guy made a lot of cool friends. Man, that's they way to show the history in a wonderful song. Magic, guys!!

Enjoy whatever happens!

Peter & Janice (& Bud)...

Had to immediately look back to see what the piano was. Sounds great. What plugin was used to render the MST?

Janice. You are a Star. Great! Excellent harmonies, too.

Love the arrangement. Killer guitar work, Peter. Excellent mix.

Nice loping version of a classic. Nicely sung, enjoyed the guitar on the outro as well.

Ray, that is exactly the reaction it was hoped that arrangement would elicit. EC was the first to lay it out like that so the high bar had been set. The notion was all Peter’s and we feel he aced it.

Thanks!

Great piano sound. I surely was waiting for Peter's guitar. Of course it is wonderful to enjoy Janice's excellent vocals, but I certainly would have enjoyed hearing another virtuoso much earlier laugh But the end is really rewarding. "Ain't Nobody's Business with Janice Merritt on vocals" who can argue with that, at least on the same level as Bessie Smith whose version I listened after hearing yours.

Hi Peter and Janice,

I really, really enjoyed this. I loved the authenticity of this arrangement. In the 1920s, it's more than likely that this song would have been performed exactly as you've arranged it for piano and voice. These are the early days of Tin Pan Alley and pianos were really popular.

Janice, your singing is perfect. I love those slide-up notes and the relaxed easy feel of your performance.

Peter, when the ending came along and the arrangement time-travelled into the 21st century, you stole the limelight. Great playing!

Loved the journey.

All the best,

Standing ovation. Janice, what on Earth is going on with your voice? I thought it couldn't get any better, and now - both in "Emerald" and here - you seem to have gone up yet another notch and broken a few barriers that no-one thought could be broken, in the quality of vocals, yet again.

The arrangement is stunning. Superb surprise at 3:45 or so.

Congratulations.

I'm late to the party, again.

As usual everything I wanted to say already has been said. So all I can add is when I see those three names on a song I know it will be a winner and this is definitely a winner for sure.

Loved it.

I've heard so much talk about "ear candy" that you when you hear something like, you realize a seven course meal when you get one. You know that meal that's SO good that your one serving wasn't enough, so you go back for seconds, then thirds. Yeah that.

Expected and delivered.

At this point, is this even hard for you three? Not joking.

Hi Peter and Janice,

That song is a successful cooperation between the both of you. Very nice indeed.
Those beautiful vocal(s) and guitar, but also the saloon piano were superb!
I wouldn't mind if that had stayed this way the whole song, so the playing of the rest of the band in the second part came as a surprise. Not a bad surprise though.

And Janice, I am also not surprised you don't care what people might say about you. These lines are written for you, so to say.
I enjoyed it,
Hans

Thank you! And, yes, Peter’s outro was special.

The arrangement is stunning. Superb surprise at 3:45 or so.

Congratulations.

Thank you so much. I love these old public domain songs!

Excellent take on classic! Stunning arrangement. Peter, amazing guitar playing, outro shines. Janice's vocals and harmony sounds very powerful and natural. Bud, Peter super mix. Enjoyed it! Hmm, I think I should steal that piano smile Thank you for sharing.

Misha.

I’m glad you liked the vocals and thanks for mentioning the harmony. Bud said that you will need Logic Pro’s Grand Steinway sound if you steal the piano smile

As usual everything I wanted to say already has been said. So all I can add is when I see those three names on a song I know it will be a winner and this is definitely a winner for sure.

Loved it.

In fact we have done numerous Public Domain songs, not covers as such.

If you go to Janice & Bud's Soundcloud page you will find many excellent examples.

Janice has a way of interpreting these old songs that breathes new life into them.

It's always a treat to hear what she comes up with.

An interpretation of a public domain song (in the US earlier than Jan 1, 1925) gives the artist full ownership of the song, i.e. you own the copyright. SoundCloud, Youtube, other hosting platforms and all the streaming services (Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon, etc.) recognize this. You cannot claim ownership of a song not in the public domain and that you did not create - what in the industry is typically referred to as a cover song. You can license it but you do not own it. After ten years of creating and posting our fully copyrighted versions of public domain songs I feel we would’ve been informed were it not acceptable. Several of our PD songs posted here and created with BiaB have been licensed to large companies who obviously have no issues with our copyright.

Perhaps nothing but nomenclature.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
