By now, I think I should know this stuff... but I do not.
If I have a Midi(Super trk) on one of the mixer slots, how do I know WHICH midi channel it will be using?
I have something on mixer slot #6 (Legacy), but the midi channel it is using is 4.

The way I usually do it is I would just set VST synth midi to Omni, and try channels one by one until I find the one it plays on.

Is there a way to see in mixer panel which midi channel it is outputting to?

Thank you!

By default, the mixer channel instrument assignment is determined by a .dk file loaded at startup.

Here are those default instrument assignments from the Options Menu.

If you're creating a new song file in Band-in-a-Box the MIDI channel settings will follow the channel settings in the MIDI Settings window, Preferences (Ctrl+E) > Channels.

However, if you import a MID file and the MID file has MIDI channel assignments then the MID file assignments over rides the program defaults.

This is one of those screens that needs to be revised to accommodate Utility Tracks (or whatever they become).

I could do a test, but perhaps someone here knows: let's assume the song uses the default channels as shown above by Jim and Charlie. Does this mean if you change a RealTrack bass to a MIDI instrument, that MIDI instrument will be on MIDI channel 2? I think it does, but I never checked.

Charlie, Jim
Thank you!

So I guess there is no way to view it within the mixer. Unless memorized - deep menu is the only way.
In my opinion it should be done within the mixer. Not only to view, but re-assign Midi channel. Just as with any major Synth/Sampler, Daw and most of other software that uses Midi.

I think it might be a good candidate for Wishlist smile

I noticed that recording midi to a Utility track didn't sound on my external midi module.
Changing midi channnel in the mixer didn't work (where the midi channel should be set).
A softsynth like TTS-1 could play the midi from the utility track, so I gather some midi routing needs to be fixed. smile

Cheers,
Pete

Each Utility Track is multichannel and can have 16 channels of MIDI. Anything you record into a Utility Track will be recorded on whatever MIDI channel the keyboard was set to.

To change what MIDI channel your recording is on you would use the Piano Roll editor. In there, use the "Chan" drop down menu to select the channel your notes are on, right click in the note area and choose Select All Note Events, change to the MIDI channel you want the notes on, then right click again and choose Re-Channel Selected Events To The Current View Channel.

You're welcome, and yes this is very powerful. 16 Utility tracks, each with 16 MIDI channels, making 256 total MIDI channels.

It'll be very handy for recording instruments that output on multiple MIDI channels, like some guitar MIDI implementations, or maybe controllers like the Roli Seaboard or Haken Continuum.

Perhaps you could consider a Callie-type announcement here, and make it a sticky. I don’t think this news has caught up with the many users who for years requested more MIDI channels. Blow your horn on this one.

Certainly Matt, that's a great idea! I'll mention it to Callie, and between the two of us this might be a great news post.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
