Following a jazz guitar tutorial, I have a track for Autumn Leaves. The tutorial instructed me to do a "Shot", with the exception of the bass. Sounds cool, but I'd like to generate a solo that plays over the rest of the band stopped. I can't do an exception for the soloist. How to make this happen?

In other words, whole band kicks beat one, bass keeps walking, and band comes back in on the next measure. How can I get the soloist to play over beats two, three, and four, while the band rests(although the bass keeps playing)?

You can use a Utility track, set it to snap and generate from beat to beat.

Would I need to generate the whole solo on the Utility track? Seems like a bit of effort for one measure.

Can you enter the chord followed by two periods (..) followed by the letters b and s to allow the Bass and Soloist to keep playing? I just tried that and it seemed to deliver what I think you are looking to achieve. See attachment.

Those functions aren't available in BIAB 2021.

If BB VST and Daw are used together, it is very easy to implement, very flexible and simple

I'm pretty certain that Pipeline was using the 2021 version.

The trick is that the audio has to be on a Utility Track first, and you edit the audio from the Utility Track.

So, I have to trick BIAB 2021 to generate a one-measure Real Track in order to get the soloist to play during a shot? Seems like a lot of extra work.

The Chord Chart color is irrelevant. Your version of BIAB can be coaxed to generate a solo at a measure with a shot and there are multiple ways to accomplish it. One thought is the specific RealTrack in use in your project may not have the particular audio recorded for a measure with a shot and rather than continue to solo, simply pauses for that measure.

It's an easy fix if that's the issue:
Freeze all chords except the soloist
Remove the shot from that measure and generate the chord without the shot
Freeze the Soloist
Replace chord in that measure back to the chord and included shot

Another method would be to generate that chord in another measure of the Chord Chart until the soloist plays the measure to your liking and then copy/paste the measure into the measure that's lacking the solo.

<< The trick is that the audio has to be on a Utility Track first, and you edit the audio from the Utility Track. >>

There's no trick to it and the audio does not have to be on a Utility Track first. The process takes around 15 seconds.

For example, Bar 17 is the measure you want the soloist to play over:

01. Select the Utility Track you want to generate a bar of your Soloist and open the Audio Editor.
02. Highlight the Bar (Bar17)
03. Select Generate and generate the Soloist instrument that's on the Soloist Track.

The chosen Soloist Instrument generates a bar of Solo in the highlighted bar 17 on the Utility Track you selected.
Play your song and at Bar 17 you will hear the generated Solo that was generated across Bar 17 and the preceding bars and following bars on the Soloist Track will play normally, the blank bar 17 on the Soloist Track will not sound since there's no audio from the Soloist instrument on that track.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
