Number Eleven of the Dozen Demos I committed to making and posting this year. (Only those made with BIAB are posted here.) Feel good about my progress yet under no illusion about how much work still lies ahead. It's been more fun than not. At least, that's how I remember it. laugh

Born in a Nowhere Town by Mark Rhodes

Born in a Nowhere Town
Words & Music by Mark Rhodes
© 30 September 2021

I was born in a nowhere town
Nowhere to go, nowhere to look but down;
Best friend's girl became my girl
I learned the wicked ways of a wicked world.

[Chorus]
Nowhere Town: Just can't stay
Nowhere Town: you can't get away
Nowhere Town: Scars run deep
Nowhere Town: The wound you keep.

A two-block strip kids cruise all Friday night
If the cops don't steal your beer,
Carly Sue might treat you right.

Went to work in my uncle's store
He paid too little, I paid myself a whole lot more;
First night in jail was not so bad
Broke the heart of my mom, broke the heart of my dad.

[Chorus]

Carly Sue said the baby's mine, all right
Had to get myself a real job
She didn't care that I worked nights.

A uniform says a lot around here
It's not all good but it's loud and clear;
Daughter might grow up and leave someday
Had my chance, l watched it slip away.

[Chorus]

A two block strip kids cruise all Friday night
Now I'm the one who steals the beer
And Carly Sue's far out of sight.

The BIAB style used here is DRVBRTS Modern Groove even 16s. The tempo is 130. The chords are D A and E. It ends on an A so I tend to think that's the key, but some people look at such progressions as being in E.

Good job Mark. Fun song and a story that grabs one's interest.

Songs posted here do not have to include BIAB tracks. You're a BIAB user so you can post any of your original songs. At least that is how I'm reading the rules and what I have seen in practice here.

Just to highlight a couple of sentences about the use of this section of the forum: (Note the word "If" in the second sentence.)

"The User Showcase is an area where users of PG Music products (e.g. Band-in-a-Box or RealBand) can post links to their original song compositions, for others to listen to."

"If Band-in-a-Box or RealBand have been used, please provide information as to which styles or RealTracks were used."

Thanks for explaining that to me, Frank.

I'll go back and add specific BIAB info to my OP.

Good old homegrown rock and roll.

I like that riff too. Is that you playing? I looked up the BIAB style and didn't see/hear that guitar. Good playing.

I can relate to a "nowhere town".
I was born and raise in a big city but spent every summer in a tiny town.

Just enough reminiscence to bring back memories and just enough modern music to make it work.

well done.

Good title, even better write.

Simple arrangement that fits the song well.

Nicely done!

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Mr. Rhodes...

How many times have I wondered about the daily existences of people who inhabit small towns I've driven through while making interstate trips by car?

I don't assume your song is autobiographical, so I wasn't expecting it to satisfy my curiosity about small town folk. Nonetheless, I found myself absorbed in your lyrics because they seem to encompass so much life experience in a few verses and a repeated chorus.

You tell a compelling story with music and 'snapshots' of memories that generate interest in (seemingly) quiet lives lived in quiet places.

Thank you.
Yes, I play guitar. (There's a guitar part in the BIAB file too.) I play the riffs and most up-front rhythm guitar. (It's all one take.)

Thank you! As it happens, my parents are from small towns in Mississippi.(Actually, they lived outside of a small town.) When I lived in New Orleans, a close friend came from a town where all public school students--kindergarten through 12th grade--went to the same building. All the kids in the family got the same school yearbook because they all went to the same school! I remember him telling me (this was back around 2000) that it was only a year or so previously that they got 911 service, which required the naming of nameless roads. He got his father to pay some token sum to have their street named Blue Jay Way.

I've heard stories of small town life since childhood, and I've been involved in a few such stories myself.

Thanks!
I like stop-and-start bits such as a stop-time chorus in a blues or swing tune. BIAB makes them easy to create.

I used to have a hard time keeping time with them, especially at slower tempos, but the more I do it, the more comfortable I get with it. (There's a clam in the first verse here which I hope I can fix with a splice and move; we'll see...)

I can relate to this song Mark as I grew up in a small town.

I liked this song. Super job on all of those stops! Your vocal fit this genre perfectly. I liked the backing tracks, especially your guitar licks.

Super song.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.
Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
