Thanks in advance to the community.

I have read the user guide and talked with the chat folks. I am still a bit unclear on terminology and how to properly read the BIAB website and their listings of RealTrack combos/instruments/styles etc.

Is a RealTrack an audio recorded single instrument?

Is a "style" or "RealCombo" simply a collection of RealTrack instruments playing together or is there a difference between the two?

One poster here said that he used DORA.sty to create a song. How does this this type of nomenclature mesh with website listed RealTrack and RealCombos? I can't seem to find any type of XXX.sty listing or definition on the BIAB website.

Or can you point me to a tutorial specifically on these terms. The user guide is not helping me.

Again thank you with your patience in bringing up Junior! smile

A Style "tells" the Band-in-a-Box program what tempo, feel, key signature and instruments to start with. For MIDI instruments a Style also includes MIDI patterns for the MIDI instruments to play.

A RealTrack is an audio recording of one or more instruments that Band-in-a-Box and RealBand use as an instrument on a track. An example of a single instrument RealTrack is an acoustic or electric piano. An example of multiple RealTrack instruments is a horn section.

PG Music distributes RealTracks in Real Combos or Sets. Sets are groups of RealTracks packaged together. PG Music presently has 375 RealTrack Sets. You can find out more about RealTrack Sets +++ HERE for Windows +++ or +++ HERE for Mac +++. Pro and Mega RealCombos are individual RealTracks PG Music packaged together to create a realistic sounding band. The ProPAK ships with Pro RealCombos that include about 500 RealTracks. You can find out more about ProCombos for Windows +++ HERE +++ The MegaPAK Mega RealCombos include about 800 RealTracks. You can find out more about MegaCombos for Windows +++ HERE +++

For comparison, the 375 RealTrack sets include more than 3,100 RealTracks.

Jim thank you so much for this! I was aware of the links that you gave with all the lists. What I was having trouble with was just the bare definitions that you so clearly described. At least to my reading, the website lists didn't give such straight forward definitions. Thank you for helping me!

So the last part of my question is the bit about a user here stating that he used DORA.sty to create a song. I take it from your comments this might be a "style", but designated by a file name that BIAB uses? The chat folks couldn't tell me where I could find out about a ".sty file" and see how it translated to their published lists of sets of RealTracks

Can you educate me on this type of nomenclature?

You were very clear above - how nice of you!!

An .STY file is the file format that the Styles are saved in and stored to the bb/Styles folder. You do not access the STY files directly from your computer, but instead Band-in-a-Box selects them from the Style Picker. This video goes over how to use the Style Picker. https://youtu.be/g9Ovdul7bi0

After you load a Style, you can change the individual RealTracks if you wish. You can do this in the RealTracks Picker. https://youtu.be/nbf9P496sy0

Ahhh thanks for that Chantelle. I think I can see now why that poster used that xxx.sty nomenclature. It looks like that name is displayed in the user interface and so he/she just mentioned that name.

But if one is given just that name, can a user then locate the style on your lists on your website to preview it, or locate it in your pickers with only the style file name given by the poster?

Follow up: after watching the videos you suggested it seems to me that I might be able in the styles picker to search by the style file name that was given to me and thus find all the information that about that style. Do I have that right? If so, where do I place that style file name to search for it?

Thanks so much!

Yes, type in the Style name as it appears in all caps letters into the Filter String field. If you then cannot find it in the Style Picker it could be that it is not available in your PAK. If you are unsure of whether or not you should have a particular Style, you can contact us directly and we can check for you. To do this, either go to live chat on our website during our open hours, or email sales@pgmusic.com.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
