Dear All,

I own BIAB for almost a decade now but still feeling that I'm not using it up to its full potential. Being a software engineer, I'm good at reading documentation. Problem is that BIAB documentation is meant for musicians and the mortal leftovers (such as me) having huge problems to understand the nuances..

I resumed my practicing on the guitar again at age 50. I feel like I'm quite dull in generating pentatonic melodies/solos. Was hoping that BIAB would provide me some inspiration thanks to Melodist/Soloist features. Unfortunately I couldn't find a way to restrict BIAB to use the pentatonic scale.

So many styles etc..but not helpful.

My guitar teacher gave me the Chameleon by Herbie Hancock as homework where I need to practice pentatonic soloing as per the rhythmic structure there.

Can anybody point me into the right direction please?
Thanks!

Hello Behcet,

First of all, welcome to the forum!

A little theory: Chameleon is a simple but cool song. It consists of two chords alternated per bar, Bb-7 and Eb7. The pentatonic scale is defined by all notes of a chords scale that are at least 2 semitones apart - which in this case for both chords are the notes Bb, Db, Eb, F, Ab (Bb-7 is the four-note chord on the second note of the Ab major scale and Eb7 is the one on the 5th note of the Abmaj scale, so the 5 notes of the pentatonic scale are from the Ab major scale.)
So you can solo on these five notes (which are also called Bb minor Blues scale) over the whole piece. I'm sure you'll find them on your guitar pretty quickly.

But you are looking for inspiration for your solo playing in Band in a Box. I would proceed as follows:
1) You create a song in Band in a Box, with say 16 bars and e.g. 4 verses.
2) You enter Bb-7 in the first bar box, Eb7 in the second and so on, always alternating until the last bar 16.
3) Now you go to the style picker, enter "Chameleon" in the search field Songtitle in the upper right corner. Two results appear in the list: "Chameleon (Herbie Hancock)" and "Kama Chameleon (Culture Club)".
4) You click on the first one, of course, because you are looking for a suitable style for the song Chameleon by Herbie Hancock.
5) The style picker suggests a list of matching styles on the left. In my case I use the RealStyle _FUNK60S, but depending on your program version other styles may be recommended if you don't have this style. Then try other styles.
6) You press ok.
7) Now choose a suitable tempo, for this song for example 100 BPM.
8) Click Generate & Play and you can hear the background track, of course still without melody or solo.
9) Now go to the menu item "Soloist - Generate and Play a Solo", this can be done quickly by pressing (F4).
10) Now you have the choice between many "soloists", both MIDI soloists (generated by algorhythms) and RealTrack soloists, i.e. solos played by real musicians to specific changes. The number of available soloists depends on which program package you have.
11) I would like to generate, as an example, a good (pentatonic) RealTrack solo with electric guitar. To do this, click on the "Best Real Tracks" button and then enter "Guitar" in the filter string.
12) Band in a Box now suggests a number of soloists, by double-clicking on the list entry you can listen to short example solos.
13) Choose for example 3756: Guitar Electric, Pop Funky Soul, Brent Mason ... and klick ok. You can also choose Nr. 576 or look into the description in the Soloists memo field for words like blues or pentatonic scale. Unfortunately you can't use the search button for more then one expression, so the expression "guitar pentatonic" will not find anything.
14) Band in a Box now generates a solo over your entered chords.
15) If you change to Notation view and select to show "Guitar2" you see notes and optionally also a tablature.

But this is only one way, there are a lot more options for creating solos, also MIDI-Solos. Have you watched the two video tutorials on the Soloist function in the support section of this website?

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
