So I was wondering what the difference is with Generate and play or when should I use it. If I have a song and start it by hit Generate and Play every time does that change the song each time? I saw a tutorial on the PG site and it seemed to imply that the Style I pick would change slightly when the chord progression is played.

Welcome to the forums.

There has often been a small amount of confusion on the role between the two transport buttons.
The main understanding is that Play will 'Generate and Play' if certain parts of the song have been changed.
However, you can always avoid a regeneration by freezing your track(s) first.

If you hit just "Play" and haven't made any changes to the song since you last hit "Play", it will play exactly the same thing as the previous time you hit play.

If you make certain changes to the song and hit Play (for example, if you changed a chord), it will regenerate the song (meaning there will be subtle, and sometimes not so subtle, changes to the song from the last time you hit play). Not every change results in a regeneration. For example, if you add some MIDI notes to the Melody track, it won't regenerate the style tracks, but just play the new melody over the existing generated version of the song.

If you hit "Generate and Play", it will explicitly regenerate the tracks for the song (except for any that are frozen) and then play (and will sound slightly different from the previous time.

That's how BIAB works. You don't get the exact same arrangement each time.

Hope that helps.

Wow jford, that was a very well and explicitly written response. I believe you assumed nothing when responding which is so helpful to a newbie (like me). Nice!

Thanks so much that helps explain the changes. I thought freeze was just for special cases but it applies if I like what I hear and don't want it to change. Nice explanation. Thanks again.

One of my top tips for any new BiaB user is to get used to freezing tracks all the time.

I've always thought that 'play' should come with a warning sign if it intends to regenerate, because often you don't realise it's going to (e.g. if you change a chord temporarily but change it back before hitting play, it will still regen even though it's ostensibly the same - unless it's frozen, of course).

+1 for sure.

I have never frozen a track - ever. Getting a slightly different sound each time is a bonus. But again I don't save an audio version of a song either, as I generate a fresh one each time I need it.

Just a different process, but it's what I want BIAB to do for me.

Another +1
This was one of the 'features' that drove me nuts when I started using it, and the freezing feature came later .. oh what a nice feature that was when they first added it <grin>

I would totally expect to see at least ONE warning with an option to 'Never show again' if desired.
The default behavior to regenerate without warning caught me many times early on.

Make your sound your own!
.. I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

I think part of the problem is that originally, PGMusic included that it was a new arrangement each time in their description of BIAB (as a feature, which I actually like). However, that aspect in current descriptions seems to have fallen by the wayside.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
