One of your best. FJ in storytelling mode, once more. The confessional tone of the second verse takes this over the top ... especially those last two lines. How you sing/speak those is just wow.
The first two lines of the first verse hook you in straight away. "The difference between wonderin' and knowin' ". Wow. And "a huge chunk of stupid" pulls no punches - the strength of the word "stupid" contrasts perfectly with the otherwise mellow nature of the song ... makes you sit up and notice, once more.
A confessional, "mea culpa" kind of song, absolutely superbly crafted - and sung in that storytelling mode of yours that you are so, so incredibly good at.
One last thing: I've been there myself, in that place from which the character of this song sings (I guess so many of us may have been there, too) ... and that, to me personally, gives the song added poignancy. In short: you've nailed it. In every way. Bravo.

Nice melancholy song, pretty backing, and I particularly liked the use of the strings.
Excellent vocal as usual that sets the mood perfectly.
Lovely songwriting.

Floyd, you really outdid yourself on this one and raised the musicianship bar here by a number of notches!
Your story telling via song is always great but this one is your best to date IMHO.
I could list all of the great lines here but all I would do is to copy the lyrics!
Absolutely an outstanding song that should be on the radio today!
Loved it.

Call me crazy, but I'm picking up on a different tone and energy than you last song. I can pick up on these subtleties. A beautiful heartfelt heartbreak. that's a lack of commitment that i regret a huge chunk of stupid that i won't soon forget there'll be no you and me... This song isn't long on lyrics; but is so potent with what is there. Your semi-conversation delivery actually sounds like someone having it happen in the moment. I'm on the wrong sound system to know if that kick kicks too much. Everything seems to on the system in the vehicle I'm in. But wow-zer! I'll let others with better systems sound off. I'm guessing it's nothing, knowing your mixing abilities. I know not every song is a winner. I'm just curious if I will ever hear something subpar from you. Again, this was fantastic! BTW, I really do love the tone of your voice in this song too. The throw away at the end of some of your lines implies the exact sentiment of the song. VERY well done!

There're a few things that make me smile immediately - seeing a new Floyd Jane song in the forum is one of them. I really like the space around the words - allowing the narrative to breathe with just enough backing to remind me it's a song rather than a melodic confession. "apologies, abuses alibis, excuses" OUCH and WOW. Mea culpa with a large cup of regret to help swallow it. Brevity certainly works for this sad, sweet, bitter pill.
Mix & arrangement wise I'd be inclined to soften the strings toward the end with some more reverb & top end roll off EQ...just to reduce the "midiness" a little.

That's a lot of kick in the drum! I haven't listened to the radio recently enough to know what passes for Country music these days, I'll just take your mix's word for it that this is what drums now sound like. Makes me feel old. I like the way the strings sneak up to fill the space at the end. The vocal's excellent - gentle and reflective. Subtle but big backing vocals on the chorus. Those Ooohs and Aaaahs blend well with your vocals. Solo cello sounds great. You're really good at sounding like you're dropping into regular speech while continuing to sing. You make me feel the song, which is what it's all about. I had to check the lyrics, because I heard "televised excuses" instead of "alibis, excuses", which was an interesting mishearing, but clearly wrong. Your actual lyric makes a lot more sense. As usual, excellent work!

Another great tune by the master. Like everyone else, I love the 'stupid' line. Strings and cello were oh so nice to my ear. Much to learn from here.

It goes without saying your work is always hanging from the highest rafter in the studio.
As you sang, I kept thinking Ronnie Dunn would have kicked this one all over country radio. And that graphic on Soundcloud reminded me a bit of Kix Brooks. In my estimation, that's pretty good company to hang around with.
Aaron has already mentioned a couple of other things that crossed my mind - that part of the lyric he quoted, in particular.
I have a new motto: If I were but half as good as Floyd Jane, I'd be twice as good as almost everyone else. That pretty much sums it up for me. Excellent work!
Take care ...

Hi Floyd,
I've got to use that word again: very flydish. Which always includes 'brilliant'! Very melancholic, but not over-sentimental.
I was surprised by the list of RealTracks etc. you used - I guess that it's not easy to get a mix so well-balanced with all those instruments - chapeau!
Marvellous (what else?).....
Take care,
Stefan

Wow, Floyd. Your lyrics are always paid such homage by all that you surround them with, with all the magic you add in your production, the passion you bring in with your vocals, and the expertise you apply to the knobs on the board. So well done.

Floyd,
Another terrific write and the production has all your usual touches. Powerful and passionate vocal.
It’s probably just me, and so I'm a little hesitant to mention, but as it hit me in both choruses each time I listened to it, perhaps worth noting. The vocal on that first line of the chorus jumps out a bit (particularly on the end of "there'll, and on “no” and “me”) and struck me as a tad piercing—then again it could be my lousy laptop speakers, so ignore if that’s the case. It’s a small nit regardless.
For me, the write is the star here—you’re on a roll in that regard. Too many great lines here to quote. Impressive stuff!
My very best to you,
Deej

The kick are a bit "heavy", yes. Experimenting. The choice of a kick has SUCH a wide range of possibilities these days. The range in Contemporary Country alone (these days) is mind-boggling. (Snares, too for that matter)... There're a few things that make me smile immediately - seeing a new Floyd Jane song in the forum is one of them. Thanks for all of that, ray!! I always enjoy reading your thoughts on a song and production. Always honest, always thoughtful. I can see where the strings could be softened a bit. I "grew up" on the classic Glen Campbell records - Al De Lory liked those string strong...

As usual, excellent work! Thanks, David. After you and C mentioned the kick I had to go listen to the song again (I seldom listen to the SoundCloud version once it's up). I think that the SC conversion did something to accentuate the kick a bit, but only a bit. Most of what I listen to these days is new releases in the Country category that lean to the Pop side of Country - and they use a variety of Kick and Snare sounds (along with the other "modern" percussion choices - snap, claps, impossible hi-hat rolls...)... after a while, you don't really notice the "difference"... I have always thought of lyrics as "conversation". That might explain some things... I think I'll write a song about "televised excuses". It might end up as a Country-Rock-Opera. There is far too much material... Another great tune by the master. Like everyone else, I love the 'stupid' line. Strings and cello were oh so nice to my ear. Much to learn from here. Appreciate that, Bob...

FJ, Beautiful tune. Lyrics and vocals are fantastic! Your arrangement and mix never disappoint. Strings work extremely well. The only thing I found a bit of distraction is kick drum. I think I understand what you were aiming for, and it might be very likely have to do with my headphones, but they sound a bit hot to me. In any case, this is a VERY successful tune. Enjoyed it. Thank you for sharing.
Misha.

You keep setting the bar high on this forum. Saying " Good job " just doesn't do it proper justice.
It's all good. From the writing, to the choice of tracks, to the singing, to the production.
You can find my music at: www.herbhartley.comAdd nothing that adds nothing to the music. You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both. The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

"that's a lack of commitment that i regret a huge chunk of stupid that i won't soon forget" Well, that nailed the feeling. "Two verses and chorus and I'm outa here." Easy to say and hard for many to do. But someone once told me that if you can't say it in two you may have nothing to say. Well you can do that and the resulting lyric never seems too sparse. The story is there. Your great vocal (that phrasing) and the fine band and mix have amply been praised so we'll add but mega dittos! Loving your art also. Outstanding mr jane, J&B aka usual suspect

Here we go again! Another great write and production. Your vocal also reminds me of Ronnie Dunn. This is a beautiful ballad to add to a long list of fine compositions. Could it possibly be that you’re getting better at this? I thought you passed that can’t get any better than this mark a long time ago. You are definitely a songwriter’s songwriter, Tom

Wow, Floyd. Your lyrics are always paid such homage by all that you surround them with, with all the magic you add in your production, the passion you bring in with your vocals, and the expertise you apply to the knobs on the board. So well done. Marty - thanks for the great comments!! Hey man, This is a very pretty song. Well done all around. Love those strings. Nice touch! Another classic. Thanks, David!! Floyd,
Another terrific write and the production has all your usual touches.
My very best to you,
Deej Thanks, Deej. "Too many great lines here to quote." - what writer doesn't want to hear that!! Never be hesitant to point out a mix that doesn't sit right for you... I never want to release a song that doesn't sound as good as it can. I went back and listened on a couple of different system. Those spots that you mentioned could easily have gotten a bit too hot (loud and high as they are)... but they "sit in the mix" fairly well on those systems that I listened to (which included earbuds, car speakers and quality monitors)...

Floyd,
Too many great lines in this song to quote.
Production is completely dialed in. You are singing at such a high level - not sure it could get any better.
Sounds like the opening cut on side two of your album...
You are giving us your best!

That's a a real tear jerker you made, Floyd! A genuine 'FJ' song: heartbreaking, wonderful lyrics and lovely melody. All brightly recorded as all of your songs. I thought: Christmas has started here! I enjoyed it, but that is nothing special; that is the case with all your songs.

A slow-dancing classic in the making.
The lyrics, melody, production--This is one of those songs that goes straight to the heart.
Nice work, Floyd.

So many'forevers' end up that way. So glad I hit the bullseye when I did. Sad song with top class lyrics and expertly sung andvproduced as ever. Bests Ian Ian - good to see you drop by. Thanks.
Misha. Thanks, Misha. THe kick has been "called out" by several people...so I guess it is a bit hot. Part of the experimenting and searching as the sound evolves. I appreciate that you "get the new stuff" and seem to be embracing the journey as well...

What a lovely intro Floyd. Set the song up for a awesome vocal and lyric. Storytelling at its finest. Beautiful song. One of my favs. Well done Thanks, Scott... You keep setting the bar high on this forum. Saying " Good job " just doesn't do it proper justice.
It's all good. From the writing, to the choice of tracks, to the singing, to the production. Appreciate that, Herb... The song, lyrics, performance, backing, production are all great. Everyone else else beat me to all the superlatives this deserves. Very tasty indeed, Cheers, Mike Thanks, Mike!!

Outstanding mr jane, J&B aka usual suspect Thanks, y'all! And, again...thanks for noting the art work! Here we go again! Another great write and production. Your vocal also reminds me of Ronnie Dunn. This is a beautiful ballad to add to a long list of fine compositions. Could it possibly be that you’re getting better at this? I thought you passed that can’t get any better than this mark a long time ago. You are definitely a songwriter’s songwriter, Tom I certainly appreciate that, Tom. Hope we'll se more of you this year!!!

Floyd,
I'm extremely late to the party but I'm glad I caught this one! I immediately noticed the lovely cello, it's perfect! The background oohs were very effective! Your voice sounds fresh and has been recorded very nicely! This is another hit worthy song that fits very well with your awesome catalog of work! Thanks, Torrey

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
