please please please ..... minor add9 without any other extensions: a simple minor triad with a 9th added. Standard pop and rock chords.

while I am at it, I'll write here some other notes that I took over the years and put them in my BB manual. As much as I love the program, I'd really like to see these little things sorted:

if you enter E5/ A , bb plays a G sharp. Why ? an E5 should just be a perfect fifth , adding the third defeats the whole thing

if you enter B dim /D , bb plays a B dim7 , a completely different chord. The B dim/ D is simply a diminished triad taken in first inversion, that's the way it's used in classical music because these guys say that if you play the B dim with the B in the bass, the chord will sound harsher than if you play the same triad with the D in the bass.

even if you tick off the 'allow embellishment of chord' option, BB often plays F sharp on a C maj7, or it will play the ninth anyways on an Abmaj7

all this stuff works well in jazz, but not so well in other genres

here's another example : playing with a 60's blues style, in the key of C, after a standard progressions C,Am,F,G , i want to modulate to the key of Em, using an Am6 as a pivot chord....and BB introduces either a note G or an F sharp, even if I untick the 'allow chord embellishment' option. This is not an Am6 chord...not in the dozen of harmony books I have

it's starting to get frustrating...it doesn't help creativity at all, there should be an option to play the darn chords just as written, no more no less.

I am really impressed by the Realtracks but this chord business is too far out.....BB looks at harmony only from a jazz point of view, but jazz harmony is not always wanted or necessary, sorry

F# is the 6th of an Am6 chord. Later, Ray

yes you are right , sorry I wrote confusely as I was describing it all without the instrument. I don't remember what I was trying to write about the Fsharp.

Either way the G should not be there....

I have tried another progression that modulated from the key of C major to the key of E minor:

C,Am6, Em/B, Bb, Em

BB plays a D sharp on the Em/ B chord, no less. It really, REALLY likes to put lots of extra notes

does it depends on the styles, as well ? for example, if I want just minor and major triads without any extensions whatsoever UNLESS i enter seventh chords, etc, would I be better off with a Folk style rather than a Funk style in order for me not to have these chord problems?

thanks

I find myself having to use the style editor option to set embellishments to 0 for the instrument concerned.

The other method is to use the style editor's velocity command, targeting a specific midi note in all the comping patterms. You could use this to edit out tall he b7ths (i.e the Bb in all the patterns.. midi notes 58, 70 etc) by assigning a velocity adjust of -90 in each case.

Then if you enter m9 you'll get m add9 , and the dim chord will also drop the 7th from the voicing.

(N.B this method won't work for patterns eneterd on a single macro note. You'll have to either mute these patterns or reimport them as full C7 voicings from a generated midi file.)

You just have to save the style as something else to ensure you dont permanently overwrite the voicings of the original.

HTH

thanks Alan, I might try it if nothing works, although it seems a pretty long-winded method. When it comes to computer stuff, I am lazy

luckily, I have found some styles that don't seem to throw these 'embellishments', so I think I'll start making a little list and using them consistently.

As far as the m add9 , I tried to just write the B in the chords, it works reasonably well, but still it's a ridicolous amount of work just to get a m add9 chord

I have no reason to believe that PG music won't address this little problem....it's nothing that they can't do ,as all the other new terrific BB features demonstrate

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
