Absolutely an outstanding song that should be on the radio today!

Loved it.

This song isn't long on lyrics; but is so potent with what is there.

Your semi-conversation delivery actually sounds like someone having it happen in the moment.

I'm on the wrong sound system to know if that kick kicks too much. Everything seems to on the system in the vehicle I'm in. But wow-zer! I'll let others with better systems sound off. I'm guessing it's nothing, knowing your mixing abilities.

I know not every song is a winner. I'm just curious if I will ever hear something subpar from you. Again, this was fantastic!

BTW, I really do love the tone of your voice in this song too. The throw away at the end of some of your lines implies the exact sentiment of the song. VERY well done!

C - Thanks! The kick are a bit "heavy", yes. Experimenting. The choice of a kick has SUCH a wide range of possibilities these days. The range in Contemporary Country alone (these days) is mind-boggling. (Snares, too for that matter)...

"apologies, abuses
alibis, excuses"
OUCH and WOW.
Mea culpa with a large cup of regret to help swallow it.
Brevity certainly works for this sad, sweet, bitter pill.

Mix & arrangement wise I'd be inclined to soften the strings toward the end with some more reverb & top end roll off EQ...just to reduce the "midiness" a little.

Thanks for all of that, ray!! I always enjoy reading your thoughts on a song and production. Always honest, always thoughtful.
I can see where the strings could be softened a bit. I "grew up" on the classic Glen Campbell records - Al De Lory liked those string strong... smile

Makes me feel old. wink

I like the way the strings sneak up to fill the space at the end.

The vocal's excellent - gentle and reflective. Subtle but big backing vocals on the chorus. Those Ooohs and Aaaahs blend well with your vocals.

Solo cello sounds great.

You're really good at sounding like you're dropping into regular speech while continuing to sing. You make me feel the song, which is what it's all about.

I had to check the lyrics, because I heard "televised excuses" instead of "alibis, excuses", which was an interesting mishearing, but clearly wrong. Your actual lyric makes a lot more sense. laugh

As usual, excellent work!

Thanks, David. After you and C mentioned the kick I had to go listen to the song again (I seldom listen to the SoundCloud version once it's up). I think that the SC conversion did something to accentuate the kick a bit, but only a bit. Most of what I listen to these days is new releases in the Country category that lean to the Pop side of Country - and they use a variety of Kick and Snare sounds (along with the other "modern" percussion choices - snap, claps, impossible hi-hat rolls...)... after a while, you don't really notice the "difference"...
I have always thought of lyrics as "conversation". That might explain some things... smile
I think I'll write a song about "televised excuses". It might end up as a Country-Rock-Opera. There is far too much material...

FJ,
Beautiful tune. Lyrics and vocals are fantastic! Your arrangement and mix never disappoint.
Strings work extremely well. The only thing I found a bit of distraction is kick drum. I think I understand what you were aiming for, and it might be very likely have to do with my headphones, but they sound a bit hot to me.
In any case, this is a VERY successful tune. Enjoyed it. Thank you for sharing.

You keep setting the bar high on this forum. Saying " Good job " just doesn't do it proper justice.

It's all good. From the writing, to the choice of tracks, to the singing, to the production.

"that's a lack of commitment that i regret
a huge chunk of stupid that i won't soon forget"

Well, that nailed the feeling.

"Two verses and chorus and I'm outa here."
Easy to say and hard for many to do. But someone once told me that if you can't say it in two you may have nothing to say. smile

Well you can do that and the resulting lyric never seems too sparse. The story is there.

Your great vocal (that phrasing) and the fine band and mix have amply been praised so we'll add but mega dittos!

Loving your art also.

Here we go again! Another great write and production. Your vocal also reminds me of Ronnie Dunn. This is a beautiful ballad to add to a long list of fine compositions. Could it possibly be that you’re getting better at this? I thought you passed that can’t get any better than this mark a long time ago. You are definitely a songwriter’s songwriter, Tom

Aaron has already mentioned a couple of other things that crossed my mind - that part of the lyric he quoted, in particular.

I have a new motto: If I were but half as good as Floyd Jane, I'd be twice as good as almost everyone else. That pretty much sums it up for me. Excellent work!

Marvellous (what else?).....

Thanks, Stefan. I often have a large list of RTs that I use in a song...they all get swapped out at some point, so they seldom (never?) play all at once...

It’s probably just me, and so I'm a little hesitant to mention, but as it hit me in both choruses each time I listened to it, perhaps worth noting. The vocal on that first line of the chorus jumps out a bit (particularly on the end of "there'll, and on “no” and “me”) and struck me as a tad piercing—then again it could be my lousy laptop speakers, so ignore if that’s the case. It’s a small nit regardless.

For me, the write is the star here—you’re on a roll in that regard. Too many great lines here to quote. Impressive stuff!

My very best to you,

Deej

Thanks, Deej. "Too many great lines here to quote." - what writer doesn't want to hear that!!

Never be hesitant to point out a mix that doesn't sit right for you... I never want to release a song that doesn't sound as good as it can. I went back and listened on a couple of different system. Those spots that you mentioned could easily have gotten a bit too hot (loud and high as they are)... but they "sit in the mix" fairly well on those systems that I listened to (which included earbuds, car speakers and quality monitors)...

Floyd,

Too many great lines in this song to quote.

Production is completely dialed in. You are singing at such a high level - not sure it could get any better.

Sounds like the opening cut on side two of your album...

You are giving us your best!
