Hi, 3 dots after a chord as I understand will give a "strum" for that bar
(I'm sure there is a better name for it)
What I am looking to do is get that "strum" but let the drums continue on.
I have tried using the bar settings to direct it "back to normal" but they stop on the 3 dots.
Is there anyway I can get the drums to continue and still get that 3 dot effect for the rest of the instruments.

Many thanks

C... is called a "hold"
C.. is called a "shot"

Just to add, C. is a "rest" (or a "mute")

You can exclude certain instruments from performing that hold, shot, or rest - just enter the first letter of the default track name. This only works on the original default tracks, so they are as follows:

B = Bass
P = Piano
D = Drums
G = Guitar
S = Strings

Keep in mind that if your style has renamed the track to something else, you still have to go by the track's default name.

And if you forget all that, you can always use the chord settings menu which lets you set the holds/shots/rests and select which track to apply them.

You can right click to get the menu or using Alt-F5 is supposed to work, but doesn't for me using 2022 build 914. I'm not sure if that is a bug.

@Simon : It would be a GREAT feature to make it possible to define track by track if the track (throughout the current song) should obey pushes, shots and holds.
Preferably individually, so for instance instrument X can follow pushes (^) but ignore holds.

Great suggestion! Alt-F5 works for me though, likely on your keyboard you need to hold the FN key to allow F5 to work as a regular Function key.

It would be best if you added that as a wishlist item in the Wishlists forums: https://www.pgmusic.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=cfrm&c=3

I am new to this forum, but have used BIAB for many years, and I found this thread because I was hoping to find a way to make the PUSH function more flexible and intelligent. While shots and holds can be specified for each instrument, push applies to all instruments. But sometimes you want just certain instruments to push and not others. In pop/soul the bass and chords might push while the hi-hat and snare would never push, but the kick would, etc. In jazz you might want the snare to push but not the rhythm, etc. in the Beatles, John sometimes pushes chord changes, when the others don't and it sounds great. Basically I like to have total flexibility of what does and does not push, depending on the song and genre.

I have always been able to get exactly what I want by rendering two separate songs with individual wav files (one with pushes and one without) and then mixing and muting the various instruments. Sometimes it is necessary to render another file with all holds and offset the entire track an 1/8 note early and mix that in, or sometimes I can just use an exact copy of the of the un-pushed track but offset it by an 1/8 and mix that, etc. In other words the material is there in BIAB to get any push or combination of different instruments, but it takes several multi-track renders and mixing and muting to get something that perhaps could be automatically done. And, of course, some pushes and holds change the strum speed of guitars, which you may not want, so you have to to use non-pushes and no holds on guitars if you want them to just push with nothing else. As I said, I can get this with multiple renders, offsetting and muting, but it would be great if some of this could be done in the program itself, since all the material is there to be manipulated.

If you want to do it all within BIAB, I would just use the chords without pushes and then generate the arrangement to your satisfaction. Then freeze the tracks that you want to play on the beat.

Then change the chord grid for where you want pushes and regenerate the parts. The frozen tracks will stay as they are and the other instruments will implement the pushes.

At least that's how I would do it.

Agree that easy, realistic sounding pushes would add a lot of musical utility to BiaB. Have never gone to as much effort as you have, but can see how that would work. Definitely on my personal wish list.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
